I see EntityRevisionCache and CacheAwarePropertyInfoStore seems to use set() on invalidation. Also, EntityRevisionCache

Georgian is a particularly troublesome example. There is a long controversy about the usage of capital letters in its alphabet, and about their technical implementation. Until this is cleared up, let's not mess with user input.

As suggested a few times above, automatic capitalization just shouldn't be applied anywhere. It may make English and Dutch look better, but it isn't necessary. And in some languages it is just harmful. finding other Wikipedia articles with the same subject/type of persons and based on those articles suggest sources
Finnish National Library presented last week on SWIB18 a tool Annif were you use machine learning for extracting subjects from a text and then could send this to the Finnish National Library to get suggestion on books see tweet I guess this could be applicable if we link things
in Sweden we have a community that have scanned 600 000 old pictures and used machine learning and face recognition to group pictures and add metadata. We have in Wikidata same as using Property:P4819 ==> we could easy suggest images to use if we link to Things in Wikidata
Earlier this year I was interviewed by @Lucie who is researching how to use Wikidata information in a better way and how to create a stub as a start for writing your own article easier see her at researchgate I guess she also would like to see this feature

Oh right, the languages. for caching we can vary the accept-language header, so that at least the most requested languages can be served from cache. But you are correct, shipping all the data may become unwieldy. I would still prefer the client making the extra request, though, since it still keeps the architecture saner and faster than doing it prematurely internally.


Varying the cache on accept-language is doable, but I don't think we do it right now and I don't think this applies though in this case:


if the user is logged in, their request is not cached, and we base the language shown on their preferences
if the user is not logged in and wants to choose a language for the interface different from the default, they have to add =... to their request, thus making it a different url to cache.

It's a bit odd as the thing is called ItemIdHtmlLinkFormatter

yeah, it might not be that obvious, especially that currently the code in this class is basically the same as in LabelsProviderEntityIdHtmlLinkFormatter.
To quote the commit message of aef2372916411750a2d2a1274958ca1400ffb261: "This (separating the link formatter for itemd IDs)  is needed to be able to evolve it separately from the one for Properties."

Those formatters haven't evolved that far away just yet. I am not sure if this is going to happen. I do remember though that the existing formatter weren't perfect (e.g. link's "title" attribute showing ID, whereas there were ideas it could e.g. show description). So it does not seem necessary to have a separate formatter class for property IDs (this statement with a remark that I am not aware of detailed plans of UI changes, so might be completely wrong). It might be better to rename ItemIdHtmlLinkFormatter, or even more drastically fold it back to LabelsProviderEntityIdHtmlLinkFormatter, if they're really 100% the same, and are only is used in the very same contexts.

I tend to agree, but I'd like to further discuss with you how much of a difference this really makes in the code,

As I am gone for two more weeks, it would probably the best that I shortly answer here: to me it seems both kinds of federation are completely separate and possibly even mutually exclusive. So I would rather not mix these, neither conceptually nor in terms of code. So depending on how you look at it, the difference might be either "a lot" or "not at all".

and what options a wikibase instance may have to go from one model to the other. We'd probably have to provide conversion scripts.

Per what said above, it is not clear to me in what cases such conversions would be needed. What situations do you have in mind?
Second thoughts: is the idea to potentially use the prefixed federation for now on Commons, although it might be "wrong", and then switch to the non-prefixed one once it has been implemented? With this switch I imagine one would want to do some conversion.

I understand that Commons does not want any prefixes. Current functionality of Wikibase is not what Commons need and can use. That said, WMDE is not able to commit any resources to implement the needed functionality on Wikibase side this year. We would be able to tell more in January once everyone is back from holidays, and we know what exactly is it what we need to build for SDOC.
I am sorry I cannot offer more at this point, but the calendar has no mercy, and it is too big of a thing to ad-hoc quickfix it.

Maybe in a next week or so you'd be able to answer those open questions (prefixes or not in JSON, RDF etc), and generally define what would be desired functionality. Sure, I don't disagree that it probably should be there. But like I'm saying, it's a fairly obvious a confusion between zh-yue and yue, and the presumption that that lang code existed in the right places

I didn't make the config patch.

I'm guessing it's a confusion with this being the first yue project, but the others being zh-yue - honestly, I'm not sure exactly how this should be handled, so it's not really surprising. Do we consider yue and zh-yue to be the same? Different?

@mobrovac Please note that the term box is shown based on user preferences (languages spoken), the initially served DOM however needs to be the same for all users, so it can be cached. Also note that the language specific data that goes into the term box has to be loaded from the wikibase entity. A detail to consider when going for "federation without prefixes": does this mean no prefixes just for user input, or also in the JSON serialization? Using no prefixes there either may seem intuitive, but it make the data more brittle, and harder to exchange between instances. Other repos consuming that data will then need to replicate the data-type mapping instead of a prefix mapping. That seems error prone to me.

Also, how about the RDF output? What we  lack is the the name of the customization variable to add the text on top (no matter what is on the image we are going to use.)


So we have picked the make configurable part of this ticket up as a seperate ticket and it is now on our iteration board.
