TASK DESCRIPTION
  Wikidata visualizations can be embedded elsewhere except in Wikimedia sites, 
because iframes are not allowed. Allowing iframes may be expensive, so a 
solution may be the creation of static pages with the results. Embeddable HTML 
through an iframe is a possible solution, but creating a Vega output optionis 
another one, so we can add it to any Wikimedia site using Graph extension.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  Those questions about Blazegraph perf tuning were asked on the wikidata 
mailing list by Thad Guidry. I'm not sure how much of that we've already done:
  
  
  Is the Write Retention Queue adequate?
  Is the branching factor for the lexicon indices too large, resulting in a 
non-linear slowdown in the write rate over tim?
  Did you look into Small Slot Optimization?
  Are the Write Cache Buffers adequate?
  Is there a lot of Heap pressure?
  Is the MemoryManager have the maximum amount of RAM it can handle?  4TB?
  Is the RWStore handling the recycling well?
  Is the SAIL Buffer Capacity adequate?
  Are you not using exact range counts where you could be using fast range 
counts?
  
  Start at the Hardware side first however.
  Is the disk activity for writes really low...and CPU is very high?  You have 
identified a bottleneck in that case, discover WHY that would be the case 
looking into any of the above.
  
  and a 100+ other things that should be looked at that all affect WRITE 
performance during UPDATES.

  Okay, using the “development mode + grep !***” trick from T228857#5556518 
, it looks like the init 
module shrinks by 96 included files, whereas the app module grows by 76 
included files. I’ve pasted the difference in P9637 
 – removed lines (begin with `-`) 
correspond to files that disappear from the init module without being added to 
the app module (usually because they were already present there), added lines 
(begin with `+`) are files that are added to the app module without being 
removed from the init module, and context lines (begin with ` `) are files that 
cleanly moved from the init to the app module (including the contents of 
`data-access`). I’m not sure what to make of this yet.

  So after gzip, we almost cut the init module in half (☺) but bloat the app 
module by more than that amount (☹). Probably worth a bit more investigation. 
(That’s using SI prefixes, btw, and `gzip` default settings.)

  Current situation:
  
  - `wdqs1004` is depooled to see if it helps it catch up on lag
  - `wdqs1005` has had it's journal reset as part of T238232 

  - `wdqs1006` has catch up on lag on its own
  
  Currently, the public WDQS endpoint should be exposing fairly low lag. None 
of the underlying issues have been addressed, so it is likely that the 
situation will degrade again.

 is probably part of the reason:
  
  > These clusters are in active/active mode (traffic is sent to both), but due 
to how we route traffic with GeoDNS, the primary cluster (usually eqiad) sees 
most of the traffic.
  
  The eqiad public cluster gets most of the query load, so the other clusters 
have an easier time keeping up with updates. Out of that cluster, wdqs1005 was 
depooled yesterday for (probably) unrelated reasons (T238232 
), that’s probably why it’s 
recovered since then; I don’t understand why wdqs1006 isn’t as lagged as 
wdqs1004, though.

  One thing that seems odd (to an outsider like me who knows very little about 
the system) is that some servers seem to be performing so much worse than 
others.
  
  Is there a simple reason for this (eg an entire cluster having problems?), or 
does this suggest there may also be issues with load-balancing, of which 
servers pick up which queries?

  now that all traffic is going to codfw, lag should be down. It will probably 
start to rise now that the load is increasing.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  Currently the release process for wdqs is error prone. Note that `gui` is a 
maven submodule **and** a git submodule.
  
  1. take master of `wikidata/query/rdf` locally
  2. bump the snapshot version (e.g. 0.3.4-SNAPSHOT -> 0.3.5-SNAPSHOT)
  3. push to gerrit a change for this to `wikidata/query/rdf` and 
`wikidata/query/gui`
  4. merge the gerrit patches
  5. run mvn to deploy the artifacts to the archiva repository (snapshot)
- This will generate the zip distribution containing both the server and 
the gui used by https://github.com/wmde/wikibase-docker for wdqs related images
  
  To prepare the deployment of the server side components we must use the 
`wikidata/query/deploy` repository:
  
  - delete the old snapshot and add the new ones for the `blazegraph-service` 
and `lib/wikidata-query-tools-X.Y.Z-SNAPSHOT-jar-with-dependencies.jar` 
artifacts, example commit:

  To prepare the deployment of the client side components we must use the same 
`wikidata/query/deploy`repository:
  
  - bump the `gui` submodule to the commit ref we want to deploy (e.g. 
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/wikidata/query/deploy/+/549831)
  
  The problems of this procedure are:
  
  1. There are no guarantees that the version in archiva matches what is 
committed in the git repository, since we push to archiva on the same working 
copy as the one used to bump the version there are no guarantees that the 
version bump commit does not become a merge commit once validated in gerrit or 
worse being rebased after the fact.
  2. `gui` being a git submodule of `wikidata/query/rdf` is confusing and error 
prone, the gui is being developed on its own repo but when bumping the snapshot 
version of `wikidata/query/rdf` we create a separate commit for it. Meaning 
that this repo has two independent sources of changes.
  
  There could be two strategies to strengthen the release process of this 
project and both of them requires getting rid of the `gui` submodule.
  
  A single repository
  ---
  
  Move the `gui` project directly inside `wikidata/query/rdf`.
  
  - pros:
- A single unified release process for the server and the client and the 
zip distribution managed by the maven release plugin
  - cons:
- needs to release everything if either the gui or the server needs an 
update (already the case today for the zip distribution)
- git history is lost on the `gui`
- find solutions for the deploy preparation:
  - unclear if scap is able to do some preparation (unzip a file prio to 
deploying). The gui would be available as jar file from archiva
  - if scap is not able to do this we still need a `gui` submodule and have 
it updated to the tag created by `maven release`
  
  Separate repositories
  -
  
  Remove the `gui` submodule from `wikidata/query/rdf`.
  
  - pros
- independent release processes for the gui and the server (which reflect 
reality of the development)
- can use the maven release plugin for `wikidata/query/rdf` and have real 
versions
- unchanged deployment preparation on `wikidata/query/deploy`
  - cons
- requires a new repository to manage the distribution of the zip file that 
contains
- 3 steps release process:
  - server, gui and the zip distribution
