  Yes. Almost certainly. Especially in the beginning of the weekend it is 
sometimes frustrating if you start to realize that wikibase became incompatible

TASK DESCRIPTION
  The the current merging strategy for applying updates require sending all the 
entity data on every update. The goal of this task is to design a new updater 
that will be able to send the minimal number of triples to the RDF store to 
synchronize the graph with the state of wikibase.
  Note: this is a very rough plan and many details will probably change as 
implementation specific requirements will pop up.
  
  The proposed approach relies on a system able to do stateful computation over 
data streams (flink).

  Based on a set of source event streams populated by mediawiki and change 
propagation the steps are:
  
  1. filter: filter events related to wikibase and its entities
  2. event time reordering: reorder the events and assemble them to a single 
partitioned stream
  3. rev state evaluation: determine what command needs to applied to mutate 
the graph
- this steps require holding a state of previously seen revision and other 
actions (e.g. visibility change)
- the output of this is a simple event without any data saying: do a diff 
between rev X and Y, fully delete entity QXYZ, ...
- the initial state will be populated using the revisions present in the 
RDF dump
- seen revisions (after a fresh import) will be easy to discard
  4. rdf diff generation: materialize the command and fetch the data from 
wikibase and send it over a RDF stream
- it's probable that in some cases (suppressed delete) the exact set of 
triples to be deleted will be unknown and thus will require a special delete 
command to be applied to the backend
  5. rdf import: The components reading this stream will be very similar to the 
current updater: a process running locally on the wdqs nodes pushing data to 
blazegraph
  
  For the first iteration no cleanups will be performed, orphaned values & 
references will remain in the RDF store. This will be mitigated by more 
frequent reloads of the dump.
  Such system being prone to deviation frequent reloads will be important, it's 
important to note that the state of step 3 is tightly coupled with its dump and 
thus we will have to instantiate a new stream per imported dump. In other words 
a wdqs system imported using dump Y will have to consume the RDF stream 
generated from an initial state based on this same dump. This means that the 
RDF stream will be named against a particular dump instance.
  
  Note on event time reordering:
  
  - seems to be relatively easy in flink: e.g.

  Note on state management:
  
  - RocksDB offers incremental checkpoint and seems to support high cardinality 
https://ci.apache.org/projects/flink/flink-docs-stable/ops/state/state_backends.html#the-rocksdbstatebackend
 quite well, the operation where we need a large state seems to be 
partitionable and thus the state can be split into multiple buckets.

  Leaving this as UBN for now as it still blocks the .18 train (if that train 
is to continue / restart) per what I said in T244529#5859927 
.
  I'm away next week, @Tarrow knows everything I know.
  If the next train to roll is .19 this will not be an issue as the revert for 
the wikibase default is already merged on master. (in which case this can be 
downgraded from UBN)

  - We should not read terms from the new term store for item ids higher than 
where the migration script has run to (currently ~10,000,000), as past that 
point is not populated fully, hence nothing being able to lookup labels and 
falling back to item ids.
- This started happening on wikis with the wmf.18 train rollout which 
included a patch changing the defaults in Wikibase to read from the new term 
store for all items

- This happened due to the oversight in configuration name which was 
changed in https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/570892, caused an outage, and then 
was reverted (NOT YET FIXED)
- This fix meant that all wikis started reading from the new termstore for 
items under Q10,000,000 when previously the defaults were used meaning group0&1 
reading from the new term store for all items and group2 was reading from the 
new termstore for no items.

  This will leave the train able to continue and all client wikis reading from

mediawiki-config to match what is currently being used in production for 
clients (read from old everywhere)
  - Fix the incorrectly named config var in mediawiki-config
  - Move forward with changes reading from the new term store for items on 
clients (see T225057: Switch `tmpItemTermsMigrationStages` to 
MIGRATION_WRITE_NEW ) in a 
controlled manner.

  Using the same value for "unknown" is a very bad idea and should not be 
considered. You already found out why. This highlights another general design 
principle: the RDF data should encode meaning in structure in a direct way. If 
two triples have the same RDF term as object, then they should represent 
relationships to the same thing, without any further conditions on the shape of 
that term. Otherwise, SPARQL does not work well. For example, the property 
paths you can write with * have no way of performing extra tests on the nodes 
you traverse, so the meaning of a chain must not be influenced by the shape of 
the terms on a property chain, if you want to use * in queries in a meaningful 
way.
  
  This principle is also why we chose bnodes in the first place. OWL also has a 
standard way of encoding the information that some property has an 
(unspecified) value, but the encoding of this looks more like what we have in 
the case of negation (no value) now. If we had used this, one would need a 
completely different query pattern to find people with unspecified date of 
death and for people with specified date of death. In contrast, the current 
bnode encoding allows you to ask a query for everybody with a date of death 
without having to know if it is given explicitly or left unspecified (you don't 
even have to know that the latter is possible). This should be kept in mind: 
the encoding is not just for "use cases" where you are interested in the 
special situation (e.g., someone having unspecified date of death) but also for 
all other queries dealing with data of some kind. For this reason, the RDF 
structure for encoding unspecified values should as much as possible look as 
the cases where there are values.
  
  I am not aware of any other option for encoding "there is a value but we know 
nothing more about it" in RDF or OWL besides the two options I mentioned. The 
proposal to use a made-up IRI instead of a bnode gives identity to the unkown 
(even if that identity has no meaning in our data yet). It works in many 
unspecified-value use cases where bnodes work, but not in all. The three main 
confusions possible are:
  
  1. confusing a placeholder "unspecified" IRI with a real IRI that is expected 
in normal cases (imagine using a FILTER on URL-type property values),
  2. believing that the data changed when only the placeholder IRI has changed 
(imagine someone deleting and re-adding a quantifier with "unspecified" -- if 
it's a bnode, the outcome is the same in terms of RDF semantics, but if you use 
placeholder IRIs, you need to know their special meaning to compare the two RDF 
data sets correctly)
  3. accidental or deliberate uses of placeholder IRIs in other places (imagine 
somebody puts your placeholders as value into a URL-type property)
  
  Case 3 can probably be disallowed by the software (if one thinks of it).
  
  Another technical issue with the approach is that you would need to use 
placeholder IRIs also with datatype properties that normally require RDF 
literals. RDF engines will tolerate this, and for SPARQL use cases it's not a 
huge difference from tolerating bnodes there. But it does put the data outside 
of OWL, which does not allow properties to be for literals and IRIs at the same 
time. Unfortunately, there is no equivalent of creating a placeholder IRI for 
things like xsd:int or xsd:string in RDF (in OWL, you can write this with a 
class expression, but it will be structurally different from other cases where 
this data is set).
  
  For the encoding of OWL negation, I am not sure if switching this (internal, 
structure) bnode to a (generated, unique) IRI would make any difference. One 
would have to check with the standard to see if this is allowed. I would 
imagine that it just works. In this case, sharing the same auxiliary IRI 
between all negative statements that refer to the same property should also 
work.
  
  So: dropping in placeholder IRIs is the "second best thing" to encode bnodes, 
but it gives up several advantages and introduces some problems (and of course 
inevitably breaks existing queries). Before doing such a change, there should 
be a clearer argument as to why this would help, and in which cases. The linked 
PDF that is posted here for motivation does not speak about updates, and indeed 
if you look at Aidan's work, he has done a lot of interesting analysis with 
bnodes that would not make any sense without them (e.g., related to comparing 
RDF datasets; related to my point 2 above). I am not a big fan of bnodes 
either, but what we try to encode here is what they have genuinely been 
invented for, and any alternative also has its issues.

  We don't know what happened, but the fix to this caused cluster wide 
timeouts, maybe the new term storage couldn't yet handle the additional load? 
Will need to be investigated and we need another short-term fix.

  I tried again to log in to Wikidata with AWB using Custom project option:

  and that works. Unfortunately if I try to edit a page, I am asked to re-login 
and that operation fails with 403 error. See:

  Note that people who are counting unknown values with `wdt:P106 ?blank` 
already only count //best-rank// statements; and if they count all statements 
via `p:P106 ?statement. ?statement ps:P106 ?blank`, then they should still get 
the correct count. So I’m not sure how bad the collapsing of unknown values 
would be in practice.
  
  The “find entities which share the same value” example is a very good point, 
though. That might be dangerous.
  
  > I did some tests and isBlank is a lot faster (I suppose because this 
information is inlined as opposed to the IRI that has to be fetched from its 
dictionary).
  
  If we go with an `wikibase:isUnknownValue` function, then its implementation 
might also be able to be very efficient, also looking only at the inlined part 
of the information? Not sure. (I’m assuming that these `wdunk:` nodes would be 
inlined as a special “unknown value” type and the “entity ID + UUID” part, 
similar to how entity IDs, I believe, are inlined as their type plus the 
numeric ID part. Hopefully the UUID isn’t too long to be inlined? But maybe 
even if it is, the `wikibase:isUnknownValue` function wouldn’t need to load the 
not-inlined part? I don’t know enough Blazegraph internals.)

  Note that the API won’t return such results by default, but you can ask for

  Currently, this returns an internal error, “InvalidArgumentException: 
$idSerialization must match /^Q[1-9]\\d{0,9}\\z/i”, at 
`CheckResultsRenderer:76`:

$typeItemId ) );
  
  I assume that’s due to the `"One of"` constraint type of the first result 
(`"One of"` not being a valid Item ID serialization), and it would probably be 
fixed by clearing and reimporting the constraint definitions table, as 
mentioned in the previous comment.

  This might just be fallout from before we migrated constraint definitions to 
statements (years ago); it’s possible that we never cleared the constraint 
definitions table in Beta. If that’s correct, it could be easily fixed by 
deleting all rows from the constraint definitions table, followed by running 
the `ImportConstraintStatements.php` maintenance script.

  Ah, but Beta Commons has no idea that Q505107 means “one of” – 
`InitialiseSettings-labs.php` only configures that for Beta Wikidata:

  So I guess all the settings that specify entity IDs for 
WikibaseQualityConstraints (constraint types, severity levels, parameter 
properties, etc.) need to be changed so that they’re not just configured for 
Beta Wikidata, but also for Beta Commons.
  
  As it happens, I believe this would //not// affect real production Commons, 
because in production we don’t override those settings at all – the default 
values are those from real Wikidata. So I think constraints might actually work 
already on Commons if they were enabled there, just not on Beta Commons. (We do 
override those settings for Test Wikidata; if Test Commons in production is 
supposed to read constraints from Test Wikidata, then it would need to get 
those IDs as well.)

  So the decision by the QS team was not to do this as part of their work, so I 
guess this swings back to WMDE.
  
  Right now the build job is broken anyway, so if this is the last blocked 
please done block on this, instead just disable the job.
  
  Moving forward we will recreate the job using docker, or change the build 
process or something else etc.

  So this taks still needs to look for the same pattern of service construction 
where one of the things injected into the service ends up doing dB calls or API 
calls (what was happening with the language fallback chain issue).
  Less of a profiling thing and more of a looking by eye thing.
  Might be able to do something clever actually where a test replaces the db 
layer and http call later and calls all of the wikibase repo getters, making 
sure no http or SQL calls are done.
