[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T236593: Cannot enter multiple forms for the same language variant

(T236593#5610903 ): if you
need separate statements, then you need separate forms or lexemes. (I think
this is a sufficient condition, though it might not be a necessary one.)
Pronunciation (whether pronunciation audio
 or IPA transcription
) is probably the most significant
kind of statement here: if a speaker would pronounce the spellings differently,
then they should be different forms – regardless of whether the difference is a
completely different ending as in octopuses/octopi, or just an extra schwa as
in aft(e)nen. (I don’t find the hyphenation example as convincing… don’t you
need a different hyphenation for every spelling variant, even for cases that
really should just be multiple representations of one form? E.g. co‧lor/co‧lour
– that could just be multiple statements on the same form, with different
monolingual text language codes.)

  > I suspect this rule covers the Norwegian example that originally motivated
this task: I feel like “parametere” and “parametre” are probably pronounced
differently, much like “aftnen” and “aftenen” are pronounced differently in
Danish according to Finn. For Vietnamese chữ Nôm, I feel like @mxn’s comment at
T236593#8024999  goes in a
similar direction, though I admit I find the whole Chinese-characters part of
this discussion hard to follow.
  >
  > For the cases where you really only want to have one form with multiple
representations, I still agree with @daniel’s comment (T236593#5610378
): “you make up a code for
each of the spellings”. In practice, the only way to “make up a code” that we
currently support is to append -x-Q//12345// to an existing, established
language code. As far as I understand, this solution works well for Hebrew:
e.g. ספר/סֵפֶר (L67105)  (the
“book” word) uses the language codes `he` and `he-x-Q21283070`, where Q21283070
 represents Tiberian vocalization, the
orthography with diacritics. At some point, an editorial decision was made that
the spelling without diacritics “deserves” the unsuffixed `he` language code
(instead of both spellings using an -x-Q//12345// language code), which I think
is reasonable: data reusers who don’t care about the different spellings can
use the most standard language code (`he`) and its single representation per
form.
  >
  > Allowing people to append an integer number to the item ID adds a second
way to make up a code, and one that seems less useful to me: without knowing
what the number means, how do I know which form representation to use? To me
this runs counter to the goal of “allow[ing] the consumer to choose which
variant they prefer”. For the languages that appear to need multiple
representations for the same language code per form (e.g. the Indian languages
@Mahir256 mentioned in T236593#5608530
?), is it not possible to
make the item ID approach work, by creating more special-purpose items?
Wikidata editors would then make a decision which of the possible spellings
“deserves” the standard language code, and which additional items need to be
created (“spelling with character X”, “spelling with sequence Y”?). I
understand that not all languages have standardized spellings where you can use
a single item ID to refer to the spelling variants of a wide range of lexemes
(like in Hebrew), but I think it should still be possible to describe different
spellings using items that carry more meaning than just a number.

  As an English example, some religious people might refuse to write the name
"God" out directly as it is as this would constitute idolatry. For this we can
tag it as en-x-Q for which Q refer to religious group of people, but
there are more than one alternative way to write "God". They can either write
"G-d", "G*d", "G_d", "G-o-d", and so on. It would make no contextual
differences in whether a hyphen or a underscore is being used, and the change
in which exact symbol being used in place of original alphabet wouldn't affect
pronunciation or religious connection. Hence all of these alternatives should
be tagged en-x-Q, and with the patch it would

  I do think that RfC's and the Wishlist should be prioritized much higher than
what happens at events and Telegram.

  If I look at Community_Wishlist_Survey_2021, the highly upvoted tasks are
"Edit Wikidata in a map!", "Link red links to Wikidata, for future reference
and more benefits", "Anti-vandalism tools for Wikidata", "Duplicates and merge
candidates", "Time and date handling improvements", "Support ISO 8601-2:2019 to
specify uncertainty about times" and "Link Wikipedia redirects to Wikidata
items".

  Out of that https://wdvd.toolforge.org/index.php might be handling the call
for more anti-vandalism tools but otherwise, all the tasks seem to be still
undone. "Duplicates and merge candidates" might be a quite big task but
otherwise, a single programmer might implement "Time and date handling
improvements", "Support ISO 8601-2:2019 to specify uncertainty about times",
"Edit Wikidata in a map!", "Link red links to Wikidata, for future reference
and more benefits", and "Link Wikipedia redirects to Wikidata items" in one
year. That would mean tasking one programmer out of the WMDE Wikidata team with
fulfilling community wishes. In the past, the wishes of the community got less
attention.

  Instead, WMDE spent development resources on free Wikibase installation in
the cloud and prevented other commercial players from doing commercial Wikibase
hosting to grow the ecosystem.

  It’s still not clear to me which problem the `-x-Q123-1` patch is trying to
solve. Several languages have been mentioned in this task, but which of them
would benefit from this system? I feel like for several of them, we’ve already
reached the conclusion that separate forms are in fact the way to go.

  I’d like to extract a general rule from @Fnielsen’s comment above
(T236593#5610903 ): if you
need separate statements, then you need separate forms or lexemes. (I think
this is a sufficient condition, though it might not be a necessary one.)
Pronunciation (whether pronunciation audio

  I suspect this rule covers the Norwegian example that originally motivated
this task: I feel like “parametere” and “parametre” are probably pronounced
differently, much like “aftnen” and “aftenen” are pronounced differently in
Danish according to Finn. For Vietnamese chữ Nôm, I feel like @mxn’s comment at

Format Specification" (EDTF)

  EDTF (info ) is an extension to ISO
8601 (specifically, part of ISO 8601-2:2019), developed by the Library of
Congress with other bibliographic institutions, which defines a format for
serialising imprecise or complex dates into strings.
  It is now increasingly in use in the wild -- for example in the cataloguing
data of GLAM institutions, especially library systems; in applications like
Zotero ; in communities such as the
Citation Style Language
community; and elsewhere.

  On the face of it (as @Jc3s5h has repeatedly noted on that ticket),
implementing EDTF doesn't necessarily help with the Julian/Gregorian policy.
EDTF is an exension of `xsd:dateTime`, and like `xsd:dateTime` an `edtf:EDTF`
date by both //construction// and //definition// represents a Gregorian date
(or a more complex entity built from Gregorian dates).

  However, I suggest in this contribution
 to that ticket (Jul 20,
2022), there may be a way forward. As well as implementing dates with an rdf
dataype `^^edtf:EDTF` , we could also instead give appropriate dates an
alternate rdf datatype `^^wb:EDTF-J`. These dates would be almost identical to
the `^^edtf:EDTF` dates -- in fact the string parts would be exactly identical,
representing the same Gregorian day or same range of Gregorian days -- but the
different `^^wb:EDTF-J` datatype would represent a request, that the wdqs
onscreen rendering could pick up on, to translate the date to the corresponding
date in the Julian calendar and display that if possible. (Similar to the
meaning of `wikibase:timeCalendarModel` = Julian in a `wikibase:time` node; but
the wdqs gui will not usually have access to that).

  It occurs to me that the same approach could be used for `xsd:dateTime` dates
too, changing the RDF dump so that eg `wdt:P569` statements were written with
an RDF type `^^wb:dateTime-J` if one wanted to attach a request that they
should be rendered as their Julian equivalent.

  I think this might be slightly more involved to implement (though I could be
wrong), as I think one would want to make sure that the `^^wb:dateTime-J` dates
were treated by Blazegraph internally in the same way as `^^xsd:dateTime`
dates (ie translated internally into milliseconds, and with functions like
`day()` `month()` and `year()`. subtraction, `<`, and `>` all returning the
same results. But I could be wrong, and with the magic of subclassing in Java
it might all be possible without too much pain, so I think could be worth
investigating.

  Otherwise, failing that, if we did implement `^^edtf:EDTF` and `^^wb:EDTF-J`
as per T207705 , that could give a
way to allow WDQS to correctly render and properly indicate Gregorian and
Julian dates, at least for statements with triples with those datatypes.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T207705: Implement the Extended Date/Time Format Specification

2022-07-20 Thread Jheald
Jheald added a comment.

  As noted by @GreenReaper above, the Wikibase_EDTF
 wikibase extension
should now give a solid basis for building EDTF support on wikibase, allowing
EDTF strings to be input, validated, and rendered by the wikibase GUI, if we
want to add properties with an EDTF datatype to Wikibase.

  A separate but related issue is what adaptations could or should be made to
WDQS to support EDTF. (And could this help with issue T159160
 "Take account of date precision
when displaying dates in WDQS GUI").
  Here are some possible steps towards adding EDTF awareness to WDQS:

  1. Extend the GUI output code to recognise objects with rdf type
`^^http://id.loc.gov/datatypes/edtf/EDTF` (equivalent to `^^edtf:EDTF` for
short) as representing EDTF dates, and display columns of them in the output in
an appropriately readble way for human consumption ("humanization"). Some of
the internationalisation developed for the Commons Other date
 template and
underlying Complex date
 Lua module,  the
Wikibase EDTF  project,
or other EDTF implementations
 may help with
translations. The standard defines different levels of EDTF compliance; it
might be reasonable initially to support only a subset of the standard
initially. Functionality could be tested by building suitable strings in
SPARQL queries, using the `strdt()` function to cast them to type `edtf:EDTF`.

  2. Once it is possible for the GUI to interpret and display EDTF dates, add
triples to the SPARQL triplestore and the RDF dump with new prefixes (perhaps
`wdtn:` and `psn:`) to give EDTF-valued dates, so `wd:Q692 wdtn:P569
[1564-04..1564-04-26]^^edtf:EDTF`. The ability to use these forms in queries
should substantially address the T159160
 problem, without affecting existing
queries.

  3. The new triples should not replace the existing `wdt:` and `ps:` triples,
nor existing `psv:` triples with their `wikibase:time`valued nodes, but exist
alongside them.

The EDTF format, even if normalised through eg the edtf.js

 javascript package used by Zotero, IMO contains too many ways to express
more-or-less the same thing, which counts against efficient indexing or
retrieval. Its ability to represent complex and approximate dates does not
lend itself to the kind of range-safe fast indexing

 that can be used to retrieve exact dates (represented internally by Blazegraph
as exact microseconds since a particular moment). Similarly, if one wants to
find dates with a year-precision or a month-precision, the existing
`wikibase:time`valued nodes express that information directly as RDF statements
which are all indexed, whereas to extract corresponding EDTF statements would
require much slower assembling of the whole dataset then filtering with string
operations and/or regexes. Even edtf shops are trying to find good ways to
model the format in RDF (example ).
Given that we already now have a quite developed model for complex dates as
statements, IMO it would not make sense to give it up (contra @Spinster?). Also
I suspect there are area where it achieves more nuance and exactness than the
current version of EDTF.

Instead I would suggest that we keep the existing data model on wikidata as
the primary way of representing complex dates. I would suggest that the only
EDTF valued-property we should would be a single `EDTF date stated as`. Input
should be allowed eg of the form `P571 inception = //somevalue//, qualifier:
EDTF date stated as = ...` Bots should then translate this into wikidata dates
and qualifiers, moving the `EDTF date stated as = ...` qualifier to the
reference when this is done. EDTF-valued `wdtn:` and `psn:` triples should be
constructed from the wikidata statement and its qualifiers, to be accessible
via SPARQL, LDF, rdf dumps, or an API request. This would allow data to be
edited and round-tripped back to institutions, and input to be compared with
output, while maintaining a single preferred unified model in wikidata for
representing complex dates.

  4. At the present time, with our use of Blazegraph perhaps approaching
end-of-life, an aversion to implementing new services or functions specific to
that platform is understandable. However I believe an exception should be made
for a pair of functions to return as an `xsd:dateTime` the minimum and the
maximum date that a

  Over on T207705  "Implement the
Extended Date/Time Format Specification" (contribution

think we might substantially solve this ticket, realistically and achievably, by

  - (i) adding EDTF awareness to the wdqs output gui, and
  - (ii) adding an EDTF-valued form of triples to the RDF dump of date
statements

  EDTF would also be a very useful output format for complex dates in its own
right

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T313166: new Lexeme creation page uses a font different from the rest of the side

2022-07-20 Thread Michael
Michael added a comment.

  Mh, this will be a bit tricky, because the font-family in very easy to
override as its specificity is almost as low as possible:

  name=Vector/resources/common/typography.less
html,
body {
font-family: @font-family-sans;
}

  And in the file where that is defined, it reads:

  name=Vector/resources/mediawiki.less/mediawiki.skin.variables.less
// FIXME: Use WikimediaUI Base's OS specific default sans-serif fonts.
@font-family-sans: sans-serif;

  Though that comment was added two years ago in 434214: Implement
mediawiki.skin.variables.less for Vector
 PS6 for
T112747 .

  One way we could do this is by dropping the `font-family` rule from the Wikit
typography mixins. Or maybe provide some kind of override? 樂 Otherwise they
would be pretty unusable for on-wiki projects.

  This could look like

@mixin body ($font-family: $font-family-style-body,$color:
$font-color-base, $line-height: $font-line-height-style-body, $font-weight:
$font-weight-style-body) {
font-family: $font-family;
font-size: $font-size-style-body;
font-weight: $font-weight; //can also be $font-weight-style-body-bold
line-height: $line-height; //can also be set to the smaller
$line-height-style-body-component
color: $color;
}

  and be used as

@mixin body ($font-family: unset)

  Though I haven't actually tested that yet.

  Alternatively, we could define a global css variable for the font-family in
Vector and other skins and then use that in Wikit with the other fonts as
fallback. Though that seems like it would need more work and more coordination
and be overall more fragile.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T278962: Allow redirects and the target article as independent sitelinks if redirect badge is used

2022-07-20 Thread Manuel
Manuel added a comment.

  Hi @ChristianKl, thank you for asking! We are trying hard to ensure that all
the resources we have available for Wikidata go into helping Wikidata and the
people creating it. Community needs (e.g. from RfC's, Wishlist, events,
Telegram, Phabricator, research) are the most important factor for our work. So
I believe that our general priorities are on the right track. It may however
very well be that I should have selected this particular task before other
Community-tasks. Prioritizing all those bug reports and feature requests is
currently not as straightforward or transparent as I would like it to be, and I
am working on improving this.
