Things in the Data: namespace are not categorized, have no SDC, do not turn up in Special:Search nor Special:MediaSearch unless you actively check a box or use //Data:// in your search term. Data is not mentioned in the Commons FAQ's nor is it particularly visible in any of the pages a regular Commons user tends to visit. They are for all intents and purposes invisible to the average user. If we ever we want that namespace to grow, it needs to be integrated in Commons workflows. Adding SDC is the second most important step for that, right after adding Category support (why on earth would one deploy something like this to Commons without supporting even the most basic workflows for content curation?). These were beside the point of the proposal at Commons. I don't think anybody disagreed that is should be done via SDC in one way or another. Whether that's best done through a new property, something akin to the already existing multi-lingual "captions" or something else is not really something the Commons community can decide. So what exactly are we arguing about here? That kind of data could probably used instead of those location maps on Wikipedias as well. I would need a bit of coordination across the projects (new property at Wikidata, Stuff in the Data: namespace at Commons should probably look more like file description pages and needs better documentation, integration with StructuredData). I've got some ideas for that, but the over-all system should probably be discussed elsewhere, (I'm not sure where, though).
