TASK DESCRIPTION My `listeria` tool continuously operates on ~225K wiki pages with SPARQL queries. To update each page once a week (used to be daily, with fewer pages), that means a rate of 22 SPARQL queries/min. Since each query can run for minutes at a time, the query server often kills the tool and blocks the server (104 error). The tool does oauth-login as ListeriaBot. Is there a way to tolerate a higher rate of queries from specific users? Or is there a toolforge-only blazegraph instance I can hit instead? That makes it hard to fall back from method to the other. Magnus added a comment. FWIW, I have already changed my code to work with either `claims` or `statements`. Quick thoughts: - IMHO this change is too significant to do it "just because it's a nicer word". No one really cares what it's called, as long as you call it the same thing every time. - A big problem with this change that it was not announced anywhere I did see, and I'm pretty much subscribed to everything public. Give us poor volunteer devs some warning, at least - Also, it's inconsistent. Wikidata items and properties have `claims`, mediainfo items have `statements`. Is this going to change on Wikidata as well? Wikibase in general? - Other things have changes in the Commons/mediainfo implementation. `datatype` is missing, for one (tracked by some other issue here). Will it come back? Will it stay missing but only for `mediainfo`? The problem is not that things are different, they are different needlessly (AFAICT), and unannounced. That's not what the issue is about. If a query usually runs 1-3sec, no problem if it takes 10, or 30 in rare cases. This issue is different because: - timing differences are extreme. 3sec vs 3min - this kind of thing is new, as in a few days ago, when it's been working fine for years - the exact same query, run again, will very likely return in the usual short time - the extremely long response makes tools unusable. If I'd get an error I could possibly recover, but just waiting is not easily caught - the extremely long response breaks some default settings, e.g. the one I use for my Rust tools This all points to a single point of failure, either on the response generation or on the transport. You can use this to see whether the time was spent on the web server or in transportation/routing. TASK DESCRIPTION Many of my tools use the `wbgetentities` action to get data from Wikidata. This usually works well, but since yesterday I found that some of these queries take a lot of time, with some frameworks timing out. I am talking 1-2sec vs. 3.5min here. There is no fundamental difference between these queries, just different entity IDs. Results do not appear to be different either, same size, valid JSON etc. I would imagine this is one single server begin slow. Can't see which server produced them though. I will attach a screenshot, once I figure out how to do that in Phabricator. Can currently be reproduced by visiting https://tools.wmflabs.org/reasonator/?q=Q350 but I don't know how reproducible this behaviour is. Magnus added a comment. So here is what happens: I create(d) lots of gene/protein items (example <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q56558498>) for various species. For many statements, I can create references, as I get them from the upstream source. That paper is one of the often-cited ones, about a determination method. What I also do is add the gene/protein in question as the "main subject" of the publication item. In most cases that makes sense, but not in that particular case. I have now limited P921 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P921> for all publications to 100 entries, that should prevent this from happening again. The P921 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P921> in the item in question can be removed (no, they are not duplicates, the code checks for those). Magnus added a comment. In many cases, especially bot/background tasks (e.g. Listeria), a lag of hours is not critical. This is also true for many interactive tools, where the user gets some items matching certain criteria. However, two situations I see as problematic: "Instant gratification" - You see a problem via one of my tools, go fix it, reload to see how nicely it's fixed now - except it isn't. Frustrating, but tolerable. Batch jobs. For example, there is an issue with the sourcemd tool at the moment. Essentially, it checks for a large number of scientific publications if they exist on Wikidata or not. If not, it creates them. Now, if people have accidentally listed the same paper twice, or if two different batch jobs check/create the same paper, then the first create is sometimes "invisible" due to SPARQL lag, and a duplicate item is created. This has apparently happened a lot in the last few days. I can further limit the item number the bot accepts (though I have other people asking me to _increase_ it...).
Other possible solutions:
Change the query sparql=SELECT ?item WHERE { ?item wdt:P131 wd:Q1199 } to include LIMIT 1000 or the like
Change MediaWiki to not accept texts it can't display...
