MarkTraceur added a comment. @WMDE-leszek - I spoke with @jcrespo and some others about potential issues with the SDC deployments, and we basically decided that it would be best to move the Wikibase tables to a separate cluster out of an abundance of caution. They wanted a WMDE perspective as to whether making that move would be possible and what effects might be seen based on the various refactoring going on, in particular with the wb_terms table. Given you've been our point of contact on Wikibase work recently, I hoped you could chime in or bother the correct person to give feedback on this matter. It should be noted here, also, that the Wikibase tables on the Commons database are currently all-but-empty, so it's not a huge threat to the cluster. However, we're investigating the impact on the revisions table and will be exploring what is needed to avoid further issues. TASK DESCRIPTION Go to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page Type "User:MarkT" into the search bar in the upper right Observe infinite spinning wheel of doom while waiting for an autocomplete Bonus intel: A. repo/resources/wikibase.ui.entitysearch.js is the spot where the search bar is hijacked, turning it into a search for only Wikidata items. Did I say Wikidata? Yes. Because... B. repo/resources/jquery.wikibase/jquery.wikibase.entityselector.js has a default entity type of 'item', and there doesn't appear to be any configuration for adding or overriding. C. It would be great if not only we could configure the entitysearch widget to work for mediainfo entities, but also put the normal suggestions (for user pages, project pages, etc.) alongside them somehow. I suspect that may be a UX thing we haven't figured out yet, given the current state of search. If WMDE is looking for a tie-breaking vote, it seems like the entire SDC team (including myself) is on board with "option 3", so...should that be the path forward? OK, I think I have the lookup services mostly written (probably some PHP wiring that I'm not quite perfect on, will deal with details during testing), but I'm a little unclear how I'm meant to hook those up to the existing API module in Wikibase. MarkTraceur added a comment. OK, just going to write down some notes about what I've found out so far... First, we decided that the key accomplishments here would be the following: An entry in the file page's page_props that corresponds to the mediainfo page (accessible via action="" similar to wikibase_item) An API module that allows for getting a mediainfo entity via the file page title (e.g. action="" with all other params of wbgetentities, essentially just an alias other than the ID lookup) I have discovered several interesting things that I will document here, mostly for my own edification: The MediaInfo id string (M13, for example) is just the ID of the file page in the MediaWiki database (and, therefore, the normal MW API results), so it would be relatively easy to use that as a temporary implementation if anyone wanted to start writing bots. This is not useful for internal code, because there are abstraction functions we should use to avoid problems later. I thought I might be able to use action="" but it turns out the sites= param is looking at the interwiki map, so there won't be any way to get at MediaInfo entities on the same site. Oh, well. I haven't yet determined at which point I should create a page_props entry for each file...creating them on file upload would be easiest, but would mean running a real mean maintenance script upon first deployment. That could be okay. I suppose that's what we'll do. Furthermore, I am skeptical of skipping the database entry and relying on on-demand data for each API call. There wouldn't be a huge performance hit, but it seems wrong to represent something as being true via the API that isn't true in the database. Some of the above should probably be further split into different tasks. I will do that now and claim the API task. FWIW, I have the following thoughts: - It should be a Multimedia team project, though we can't take it on for a while, and I don't believe we need to, because this isn't exactly high priority for anyone. - The data should be uploaded to Commons, because that is where files go. Let's keep the data on Wikidata structured. - A ContentHandler extension should be pretty trivial to write up, and could even (maybe) include support for Extension:Graph. Just a thought. @yurik should maybe chime in.
