[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T365474: Year-only dates in statements are left-aligned in rtl languages

2024-05-21 Thread Nikki
Nikki created this task.
Nikki added projects: Wikidata, RTL.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.
Restricted Application added a project: I18n.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  **Steps to replicate the issue** (include links if applicable):

  - Open https://test.wikidata.org/wiki/Q148729?uselang=ar or
https://test.wikidata.org/wiki/Q148729?uselang=he
  -
  -

  **What happens?**:

  The statement containing only a year is left-aligned.

  **What should have happened instead?**:

  The statement should be right-aligned.

  **Software version** (on `Special:Version` page; skip for WMF-hosted wikis
like Wikipedia):

  **Other information** (browser name/version, screenshots, etc.):

  This is caused by `dir="auto"` on wikibase-statementview-mainsnak and
wikibase-snakview-value-container. `dir="auto"` directionally isolates the
content of an element from the surrounding page (the page direction no longer
applies inside the mainsnak container) and should probably not be used here.
See
https://www.w3.org/International/articles/inline-bidi-markup/index.en#dirauto

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T198179: Month name and year preceded or followed by a dot or comma is parsed as having a day

2024-05-21 Thread Nikki
Nikki added a comment.

  They don't contain a dot or comma, but while testing something, I also found
that "91-04 bc" and "0091-04 bc" turn into "1 April 91 BCE" (and for some
reason "0091-04-00 bc" turns into "31 March 91 BCE").

  IETF language tags are case-insensitive. For `P305` in Wikidata, we use the
capitalisation that they do, in MediaWiki code/setup, the convention is to use
all lowercase.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T313883: Some terms are transliterated in Bengali instead of Meetei Mayek in Wikidata.

2024-05-04 Thread Nikki
Nikki added a comment.

  I think the following changes in rebuild.php (GitHub
<https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-cldr/blob/master/rebuild.php>)
 would make the CLDR extension use CLDR's `mni-mtei` for MediaWiki's `mni`:

  After line 142:

} elseif ( $code === 'mni' ) {
$realCode = 'mni-beng';
} elseif ( $code === 'mni-mtei' ) {
$realCode = 'mni';

  It might also need the following after line 62:

$languages['mni-beng'] = 'Foo';

  I think those changes will make it create files for `mni-beng` too, but
T357853 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T357853> asks for both scripts to be
supported, so that sounds like something we would want anyway.

  CLDR's `mni-mtei` doesn't contain many names though, so we would probably
still need to create LocalNamesMni.php with the list from the first comment.
I've put a properly formatted version in P61865
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P61865>.

  (Also: I think `getRealCode()` would be a lot clearer if `$code` were changed
to `$cldrCode` and `$realCode` to `$mwCode`. Neither code is less "real" (if
anything, the MediaWiki codes would be, since MediaWiki has some non-standard
codes), and without reading the description, it's not clear whether the
function is turning the CLDR code into the corresponding MediaWiki code or vice
versa)

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T345276: Language variants not considered for language fallback in all relevant places

2024-04-30 Thread Nikki
Nikki added a comment.

  It does do fallback, but normal MediaWiki pages (i.e. not the Wikibase
interface on entity pages) use the user's language fallback chain (which is
affected by the languages in their Babel box), unlike entity pages which only
use the default fallback chain for the interface language.

  You can see which languages it will try and in which order by going to
Special:MyLanguageFallbackChain (wikidata.org
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguageFallbackChain>,
test.wikidata.org
<https://test.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguageFallbackChain>).

  With `{{#babel:en|de-3|mul}}` and the interface set to `en-gb` I get:

  - en-GB - British English
  - en - English
  - mul - multiple languages
  - de - German

  With `{{#babel:de|en-3|mul}}` and the interface set to `en-gb` I get:

  - en-GB - British English
  - de - German
  - mul - multiple languages
  - en - English

  With `{{#babel:frc-0|fit-0|mdf-1|an-1|de-3|mul|en|arz}}` and the interface
set to `io` I get:

  - io - Ido (interface language)
  - arz - Egyptian Arabic (native level Babel language)
  - en - angla (native level Babel language)
  - mul - pluraj lingvoj (native level Babel language)
  - de - germana (level 3 Babel language)
  - an - aragona (level 1 Babel language)
  - mdf - mokŝa (level 1 Babel language)
  - fit - Tornedalen Finnish (level 0 Babel language)
  - frc - kaĵun-franca (level 0 Babel language)
  - eo - Esperanto (fallback for interface language `io`)
  - ar - araba (fallback for Babel language `arz`)
  - es - hispana (fallback for Babel language `an`)
  - myv - erzja (first fallback for Babel language `mdf`)
  - ru - rusa (second fallback for Babel language `mdf`)
  - fi - finna (fallback for Babel language `fit`)
  - fr - franca (fallback for Babel language `frc`)

  It seems the order it uses is:

  - interface language
  - Babel languages by proficiency (with equal proficiencies sorted
alphabetically by code)
  - fallbacks for the interface language
  - fallbacks for each Babel language

  It would make sense for country variants like `en-gb` to fall back to `en`
first, but fallbacks are mostly used to fall back to other languages and the
current behaviour allows people to override the default fallbacks, so it's
probably better to leave it as it is.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T363066: Special:Search sometimes displays language fallback indicator in the middle of mixed LTR/RTL labels

2024-04-21 Thread Nikki
Nikki created this task.
Nikki added projects: Wikidata, RTL.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.
Restricted Application added a project: I18n.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  **Steps to replicate the issue** (include links if applicable):

  - Create an item with only one label (e.g.
https://test.wikidata.org/wiki/Q169438)
- The label should be in a RTL language (e.g. Arabic, `ar`).
- The label should contain RTL text, followed by a colon, followed by LTR
text. There should be no whitespace around the colon (e.g. "تصنيف:Example")
  - Set the interface language to English
  - Use Special:Search to search for the item (e.g.
https://test.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:Search/تصنيف:Example)

  **What happens?**:

  The fallback language indicator is displayed in the middle of the label.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T362380: Display globes when showing non-Earth coordinates in statements

2024-04-11 Thread Nikki
Nikki created this task.
Nikki added a project: Wikidata.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  When displaying non-Earth coordinates in statements, there is no indication
that the globe is not the default one.

  For example, https://test.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15873 has three coordinate
statements which are displayed like this:
  F46009205: Bildschirmfoto_2024-04-12_06-41-42.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F46009205>

  It shows three identical values, but only one of them gets a map. This is
confusing and looks broken. The person viewing it has no way of knowing that
the statements have three different globes.

  One option would be to copy what is done for calendars when displaying dates.

  For example, the dates on https://test.wikidata.org/wiki/Q224620 are
displayed like this:
  F46011028: Bildschirmfoto_2024-04-12_06-46-18.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F46011028>

  Displaying coordinates in a similar way would look like this:
  F46011814: Bildschirmfoto_2024-04-12_06-56-05.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F46011814>

  This would make it clear what the globe is set to, make non-identical
statements visibly not identical, and it would be easier to understand why maps
are only shown for some statements.

  See T56097 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T56097> for actually being able
to edit the globe.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T362024: Thumbnails for tall/narrow or short/wide images are unrecognisable when adding image statements

2024-04-07 Thread Nikki
Nikki created this task.
Nikki added a project: Wikidata.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  **Steps to replicate the issue** (include links if applicable):

  - Go to https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4115189
  - Start adding a new statement
  - Select "image"
  - Enter the name of a tall/narrow or short/wide image, e.g. "Vertical bar
1-08.svg <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vertical_bar_1-08.svg>",
"Line example.svg <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Line_example.svg>",
"Ray (A, B, C).svg
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ray_(A,_B,_C).svg>", "Tetracontan
structure.svg
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tetracontan_structure.svg>" or
"Osmanlıca matbu ayraç 6.svg
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Osmanl%C4%B1ca_matbu_ayra%C3%A7_6.svg>"

  **What happens?**:

  The preview for "Vertical bar 1-08.svg" displays vertical stripes:
  F44991051: image-search-repeat.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F44991051>

  "Line example.svg" displays a solid black box:
  F44991421: image-search-repeat-2.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F44991421>

  "Ray (A, B, C).svg" displays a blurry black line:
  F44995793: image-search-repeat-5.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F44995793>

  "Tetracontan structure.svg" displays a grey smudge:
  F44995784: image-search-repeat-4.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F44995784>

  "Osmanlıca matbu ayraç 6.svg" displays a solid grey box:
  F44995798: image-search-repeat-6.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F44995798>

  **What should have happened instead?**:

  The preview should show a recognisable version of the image, e.g. "Vertical
bar 1-08.svg" should be a single vertical line, "Line example.svg" should be a
single horizontal line.

  **Software version** (skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia):

  **Other information** (browser name/version, screenshots, etc.):

  The thumbnails are missing `background-repeat: no-repeat;`, so the image is
being shown multiple times.

  `background-size: auto 50px;` seems to be causing short wide images to be
stretched to fit/zoomed-in.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T259183: Wikidata UI "Value" field is one character wide and covered by "Remove" button at certain screen resolutions

  This patch won't fix the problem with things overlapping (it will actually
make it slightly worse), but it should prevent extremely narrow columns/input
fields.

  Fixing the overlapping as well will need other changes, but I don't want to
combine changes to separate things or it will be difficult to explain/review.

  Some side by side comparisons (without the patch on the left half of the
image, with the patch on the right half of the image):

  When displaying statements, it will generally be a lot better. Values in
references and qualifiers won't turn into very tall narrow columns. Maps in
qualifiers will actually be visible:
  F44932007: min-width-3.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F44932007>
F44931993: min-width-1.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F44931993>

  When editing, it's more mixed:

  When editing qualifiers and references, the remove button will overlap the
input field instead of the input field becoming too narrow to use:
  F44931996: min-width-2.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F44931996>

  When the window is even narrower, the input fields for qualifiers and
references when editing will be slightly cut off, instead of becoming too
narrow to use. The edit buttons for the main value will overlap the input field
instead of the input field becoming too narrow to use.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T328387: Interface icons in Wikidata should scale based on the default font size

2024-04-05 Thread Nikki
Nikki added a comment.

  I think that patch should fix 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 from the description.

  1 and 4 are the triangular expand/collapse toggle icons. It would be possible
to override the styles for it on the elements where Wikibase uses it, but I
didn't include that because I have no idea which file to put it in or if I
would even be allowed to do that.

  It wouldn't be ideal, those icons are PNGs, so scaling them up makes them
slightly fuzzy. I would argue that it's still be an improvement, because crisp
edges are not much use to you if it's not big enough for you see what it is.

  Here's how it looks scaled up for me with Chrome's "large" and "very large"
default font sizes (150% and 200% I think):
  F44458726: Bildschirmfoto_2024-04-04_10-02-52.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F44458726> F44458733:
Bildschirmfoto_2024-04-04_10-02-31.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F44458733>

  The rest of the changes are in different repositories (WikibaseLexeme and
EntitySchema). I can make those use relative sizes too, but the icons in both
of those extensions are inconsistent with the rest of the site, so if I do, I
would really like to make them consistent (maybe most people don't notice, but
//I// do), not just change the units:

  The icons for lemmas claim to have been copied from `.wikibase-toolbar-button
.wb-icon` (link
<https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/g/mediawiki/extensions/WikibaseLexeme/+/5aff4a8d34dfd211cf8aa1e82f7ebad0eef28d94/resources/lemma-widget.less#48>),
 but the size and opacity are different (20px instead of 16px, 0.7 opacity
instead of 0.87).

  Screenshots of how the lemma buttons (at the top) and the senses buttons (at
the bottom) currently look at a normal font size on the same page:
  F44459972: Bildschirmfoto_2024-04-04_10-39-37.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F44459972> F44459973:
Bildschirmfoto_2024-04-04_10-39-21.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F44459973>

  The icons for entity schemas also claim to have been copied from
`.wikibase-toolbar-button .wb-icon` (link
<https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/plugins/gitiles/mediawiki/extensions/EntitySchema/+/refs/heads/master/resources/viewEntitySchema.less#5>)
 but the size, opacity and colour are all different (15px instead of 16px, 0.67
opacity instead of 0.87, blue instead of black).

  Screenshot of how the edit buttons on entity schema pages currently look at a
normal font size:

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T272144: Language name in sense section replaced with language code on page load for some languages

2024-04-02 Thread Nikki
Nikki added a comment.

  The example I gave isn't reproducible now, but the underlying problem is
still there, e.g. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Lexeme:L406433?uselang=fr loads
with "jersiais" which is replaced with "Jèrriais" after loading.

  Using the language code `qqx` instead, it seems it initially loads the
message `wikibase-lexeme-language-name-nrf-je`, and I assume it then replaces
the language name with the name from the CLDR extension (LocalNamesFr.php (link
<https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-cldr/blob/master/LocalNames/LocalNamesFr.php>)
 doesn't have `nrf-je` and would fall back to the English name).

  I'm not sure why it's replacing the names at all, rerendering what is already
there seems a bit pointless.

  **What should have happened instead?**:

  Statement values should be right-aligned when the interface is in a rtl
language.

  **Software version** (skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia):

  **Other information** (browser name/version, screenshots, etc.):

  `.wikibase-statementview-mainsnak` and `.wikibase-snakview-value-container`
both have `dir="auto"` and the mobile site has extra CSS which causes
`.wikibase-snakview-value-container` to be displayed as an inline element.

  The `dir` attribute isolates the element, i.e. the direction inside the
element won't affect anything outside the element, and the direction of
anything outside the element won't affect anything inside the element
(https://www.w3.org/International/articles/inline-bidi-markup/index.en.html
describes how it works).

  What seems to be happening:

  Setting `dir="auto"` on `.wikibase-snakview-value-container` means its
content does not affect the direction of its container.
  Setting `display: inline` causes it to only be as wide as its content and
positioned in the parent element according to the parent element's direction.

  Setting `dir="auto"` on `.wikibase-statementview-mainsnak` means its
direction is based only on its content.
  Its content is directionally isolated.
  It can't determine a direction from the parent elements or the child
elements, and defaults to ltr.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T360835: Inconsistent text direction for sitelink group headings in rtl languages

2024-03-22 Thread Nikki
Nikki created this task.
Nikki added projects: Wikidata, RTL, I18n.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.
Restricted Application added a project: wmde-wikidata-tech.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  **Steps to replicate the issue** (include links if applicable):

  - Open https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q746157?uselang=ku-arab in a private
window
  -
  -

  **What happens?**:

  The number of entries in the sitelink group headings is not consistently
positioned. If the heading hasn't been translated (or rather, if it's in a ltr
script), the number of entries is displayed to the right of the heading instead
of to the left, with no space between them.

  F43101158: Bildschirmfoto_2024-03-23_02-21-56.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F43101158>

  The same happens if neither have been translated. If the heading has been
translated but the number of entries hasn't, the number is not in the right
place, e.g. on https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q746157?uselang=ug:
  F43101649: Bildschirmfoto_2024-03-23_02-34-36.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F43101649>

  **What should have happened instead?**:

  When the interface language is rtl, the number of entries should be
consistently displayed to the left of the heading. The text for the number of
entries should be displayed properly.

  **Software version** (skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia):

  **Other information** (browser name/version, screenshots, etc.):

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T360244: Wikibase uses multiple different mappings to standardise language codes

2024-03-15 Thread Nikki
Nikki created this task.
Nikki added projects: Wikidata, Language codes.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  MediaWiki has a mapping for language codes in
includes/language/LanguageCode.php
<https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/g/mediawiki/core/+/d23c1743906a8be52afeeecde3dd69c070cd7376/includes/language/LanguageCode.php#81>.
 Wikibase has its own mapping in repo/config/Wikibase.default.php
<https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/g/mediawiki/extensions/Wikibase/+/9aabebb98c911c3f3760251043ccce4a7424094f/repo/config/Wikibase.default.php#185>.

  Some are the same:

  | Code  | MediaWiki and Wikibase |
  | `de-formal`   | `de-x-formal`  |
  | `es-formal`   | `es-x-formal`  |
  | `hu-formal`   | `hu-x-formal`  |
  | `map-bms` | `jv-x-bms` |
  | `nl-informal` | `nl-x-informal`|
  | `simple`  | `en-simple`|
  |

  Some are different:

  | Code   | MediaWiki   | Wikibase|
  | -- | --- | --- |
  | `cbk-zam`  | `cbk`   | `cbk-x-zam` |
  | `crh`  | `crh` (not changed) | `crh-Latn`  |
  | `nrm`  | `nrf`   | `fr-x-nrm`  |
  | `roa-tara` | `nap-x-tara`| `it-x-tara` |
  |

  The Wikibase mapping is only used for sitelinks in RDF (as far as I can
tell). Elsewhere in RDF, they are not converted (the ticket for that is T243428
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T243428>). When displaying entities, the
HTML `lang` attributes use the MediaWiki mapping. This results in the same
language code being standardised in different ways.

  For example: On https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5296, the
roa-tara.wikipedia.org sitelink has `lang="nap-x-tara"` and
`hreflang="nap-x-tara"` in the HTML and on https://roa-tara.wikipedia.org/ the
`` element has `lang="nap-x-tara"`, whereas the RDF
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:EntityData/Q5296.ttl> has
`schema:inLanguage "it-x-tara"` and `schema:name "Pagene Prengepále"@it-x-tara`.

  These are describing the same text/page and HTML and RDF both use the same
standard for language codes (BCP 47) so the language code should be the same in
both places.

  The function which uses Wikibase's mapping (in
repo/includes/Rdf/RdfVocabulary.php
<https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/g/mediawiki/extensions/Wikibase/+/9aabebb98c911c3f3760251043ccce4a7424094f/repo/includes/Rdf/RdfVocabulary.php#469>)
 already uses `LanguageCode::bcp47` (which uses MediaWiki's mapping), so
perhaps Wikibase doesn't need its own mapping at all. If it needs to be
possible to customise the mapping, it would probably make more sense for the
MediaWiki list to be customisable.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T355427: Pretty print for link to projects in Wikidata Query UI results

before… though it has the problem that `en:` is ambiguous between English
Wikipedia, English Wikibooks, English Wikisource, etc. (which isn’t a problem
for `commons:`).

  Commons would have a different problem: `commons:` is specifically for
filenames (the values of Commons media statements).

  More generally, I don't think we should use something which looks like an RDF
prefix unless it actually is a defined RDF prefix. `commons:` is already
confusing for me, I keep trying to do things like `replace(str(?image),
str(commons:), "")` to remove the prefix and get the actual value of the
statement, which fails because `commons:` isn't a real prefix.

  Making use of prefixes would be useful though. If it used the prefixes which
have been defined when displaying results, then people could define any they
want. It would be really useful for federated queries too (e.g. the first link
under "World" on https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Nikki/TGN defines `tgn:`
but the results still display the full URI)

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T358572: Query service language selector uses very old data, some translations can't be selected

2024-02-27 Thread Nikki
Nikki created this task.
Nikki added projects: Wikidata Query UI, I18n.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  The language selector for the query service interface is using very old data,
which means some of the translations for the query service UI can't be
selected, because the language switcher does not find the language.

  For example, when entering `ms-arab` in the language switcher on
https://query.wikidata.org/, it doesn't find any results.

  F42177289: queryservice-ms-arab.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F42177289>

  The language code was added to langdb 6 years ago
<https://github.com/wikimedia/language-data/commit/7293dc800feca79ee5dddf7f1c7c1eb1727bf5db>.
 There are translations for it
<https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/plugins/gitiles/wikidata/query/gui/+/master/i18n/ms-arab.json>.

  It also means some languages have bad autonyms, e.g. enter "ryu" and it shows
"ʔucināguci".

  F42177309: queryservice-ryu.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F42177309>

  This was changed in langdb 2 years ago

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T358116: Percent-encode URLs in statements before saving if the Unicode normalisation is different

2024-02-21 Thread Nikki
Nikki created this task.
Nikki added projects: Wikidata, I18n.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.
Restricted Application added a project: wmde-wikidata-tech.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  MediaWiki normalises everything to NFC, which causes problems when someone
tries to save an unencoded URL which contains characters which are changed by
the normalisation, as reported in T206188
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T206188>.

  Wikibase is already using Javascript to submit the edits, so that could be
avoided by using Javascript's built-in normalisation function (MDN
<https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/String/normalize>)
 to check whether the URL will be changed by normalisation and encode it if
necessary, before making the API request to save the statement.

  Simple example using the URL from T206188
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T206188>:

var url =
"https://www.ebanglalibrary.com/bangladictionary/অশোক-চট্টোপাধ্যায়/;;
if (url.normalize("NFC") !== url) {
url = encodeURI(url);
}

  turns the URL into:

https://www.ebanglalibrary.com/bangladictionary/%E0%A6%85%E0%A6%B6%E0%A7%8B%E0%A6%95-%E0%A6%9A%E0%A6%9F%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%9F%E0%A7%8B%E0%A6%AA%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%A7%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%AF%E0%A6%BE%E0%A7%9F/

  If T358114 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T358114> is implemented as
well, it would mean the URLs would still be decoded when displayed.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T358114: Decode URLs in statements when displaying them

2024-02-21 Thread Nikki
Nikki created this task.
Nikki added a project: Wikidata.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  Wikibase should decode percent-encoded URLs in statements when displaying
them, similar to what was done for the query service in T327514
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T327514>.

  Browsers typically display an unencoded URL in the address bar but use the
percent-encoded form when the copying URLs. Storing URLs unencoded can also be
problematic, e.g. applying Unicode normalisation can break the URL, like
reported in T206188 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T206188>.

  But when a URL contains a lot of non-ASCII characters, it creates very long,
unreadable URLs, which people understandably don't like and sometimes try to
avoid.

  Decoding them when displaying them would make them more readable while still
being able to store them in the encoded form.

  The example from T206188 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T206188>
(https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?oldid=756586516):

  - Not encoded:
https://www.ebanglalibrary.com/bangladictionary/অশোক-চট্টোপাধ্যায়/
  - Encoded:
https://www.ebanglalibrary.com/bangladictionary/%E0%A6%85%E0%A6%B6%E0%A7%8B%E0%A6%95-%E0%A6%9A%E0%A6%9F%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%9F%E0%A7%8B%E0%A6%AA%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%A7%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%AF%E0%A6%BE%E0%A7%9F/

  How it currently appears:
  F42023042: Bildschirmfoto_2024-02-21_16-05-30.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F42023042>

  How it appears after decoding the URL:
  F42023046: Bildschirmfoto_2024-02-21_16-05-55.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F42023046>

  I used the following bit of code in the browser console to change the link
text (I didn't check whether the decoded URL is valid UTF-8):

for (let e of document.querySelectorAll("a.external")) {
if (e.textContent === e.href) {
e.textContent = decodeURI(e.textContent);
}
}

  The generated descriptions we're talking about here would come from the
labels of `P31` statements on the items, which can be selected using
`wdt:P31/rdfs:label`.

  See this query for example: https://w.wiki/9CUR. That's 25 semi-random items,
their current description, the label of their `P31` statement, and a
description created by using the current description if it exists, or the `P31`

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T233204: Mixup of unicode characters in Query Service

2024-02-05 Thread Nikki
Nikki added a comment.

  More problems with IPA statements:
  https://w.wiki/95Mb returns four statements and claims the value for all of
them is "t̞" (using U+‎031E COMBINING DOWN TACK BELOW). That's the wrong number
of statements and none of the values match the actual values of the statements.

  There should be five statements:

  - two with "t̪" (using U+032A COMBINING BRIDGE BELOW)
  - one with "t͇" (using U+0347 COMBINING EQUALS SIGN BELOW)
  - one with "t̠" (using U+0320 COMBINING MINUS SIGN BELOW)
  - one with "t̼" (using U+033C COMBINING SEAGULL BELOW)

  The same query in QLever works correctly:

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T273627: Remove wmgExtraLanguageNames from Wikimedia production

2024-01-31 Thread Nikki
Nikki added a comment.

  I recently found out that the extension.json files support the key
`ExtraLanguageNames` (see docs/config-schema.yaml
<https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki/blob/master/docs/config-schema.yaml>).

  The documentation isn't clear enough for me to understand how I'm supposed to
use it, but after some trial and error it seems if I add the following to
extension-repo.json, I get an entry in the list of languages for that value
that I'm able to use to create items and lexemes and add monolingual text
statements:

"config": {
"ExtraLanguageNames": {
"value": {
"en-x-extjson": "English (from extension.json)"
}
},

  Would that perhaps be an option? As I understand it, that would essentially
be adding it to `$wgExtraLanguageNames` from the extension itself instead of
from Wikimedia's config. The description of this ticket says that using
`$wmgExtraLanguageNames` "was bad for several reasons" but I'm not sure what
those reasons actually are. The main thing I can think of is that adding them
to Wikimedia's config doesn't make them available to third-party users, but if
they're added in extension.json, they would be.

@Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE wrote:

  > @Michael pointed out one thing `$wmgExtraLanguageNames` //doesn’t//
provide: language fallbacks. For example, `nan-hani` on Wikidata only falls
back to `en`, not to `nan` (or `cdo`, `zh-hant`, `zh`, `zh-hans`). IMHO this
might be worth tackling as part of this task (e.g., if we end up adding some
place in the Wikibase config where autonyms of non-MediaWiki languages can be
defined, perhaps that place should also support defining language fallbacks for
them).

  Adding a language to Names.php doesn't provide language fallbacks either.
Fallbacks (and direction) are defined separately in the
`languages/messages/MessagesXx.php` files. I don't know why those
MessagesXx.php files can't created in core if we've determined what the
fallbacks/direction should be, but I discovered via includes/Hooks.php
<https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/g/mediawiki/extensions/LandingCheck/+/master/includes/Hooks.php>
 and messages/MessagesEs_419.php
<https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/g/mediawiki/extensions/LandingCheck/+/master/messages/MessagesEs_419.php>
 in the "LandingCheck" extension that it's possible for extensions to add their
own MessagesXx.php files containing fallbacks/direction.

  I have no idea what I'm doing but I seem to have got my local test Wikibase
to add fallbacks and direction for a custom language code by:

  creating `repo/messages/MessagesEn_x_extjson.php` with

  @Lydia_Pintscher, @Manuel: Could you have a look at this? I want to move
these to the Wikidata.org extension to make them translatable, but the
convention for tags is to use sentence case (see this page
<https://test.wikidata.org/w/index.php?oldid=662833> for a list of other tags
with messages in a repository).

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T217334: Allow adding of a not yet existing language

2024-01-04 Thread Nikki
Nikki added a comment.

  I have a script which does something like this -
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Nikki/AddTermboxLanguage.js

  It only has an input field, so you have to know which language code you want
to add, because I never got round to figuring out how to do a nice dropdown
(one that still lets me quickly add things by typing the language code and
pressing enter). It doesn't switch between read and edit modes though, it
follows the termbox's current mode, because I find it useful to be able to
cherry pick individual languages to show without having to expand the whole
list.

  I've been using it regularly since I made it a year ago and it's been working
well for me. The only issue I'm aware of is that it sometimes lets me add a
language a second time, even though it checks whether a language is already
shown, but I haven't looked into when/why that happens yet.

  Screenshot after loading a page:
  F41650239: addtermboxlanguage.png
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F41650239>
  and after entering "nl" in the box and pressing enter:

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T354316: Popups/tooltips in Wikidata interface cause horizontal scrolling on narrow screens

2024-01-03 Thread Nikki
Nikki created this task.
Nikki added a project: Wikidata.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  Popups/tooltips in the Wikidata interface cause the page to scroll
horizontally on narrower screens. It happens in various places:

  The tooltip for the help icon (screenshot from
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q33216580 at 700px):
  F41650201: help-tooltip.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F41650201>

  The license popup when editing a statement for the first time (screenshot
from the same page):
  F41650203: license.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F41650203>

  The language selector for monolingual text statements (screenshot from
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q44112320 at 800px):
  F41650207: monolingualtext.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F41650207>

  The unit selector for quantity statements (screenshot from the same page):
  F41650209: quantity.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F41650209>

  The preview and precision/calendar options for date statements (screenshot
from the same page):
  F41650205: date.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F41650205>

  The map preview and precision options for coordinate statements (screenshot
from https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q11120461 at 800px):
  F41650211: coordinates.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F41650211>

  These are all caused by the popup/tooltip being positioned from to the left,
even if the window is not wide enough. It should probably check whether the
desired left offset plus the maximum width of the popup/tooltip is larger than
the width of the window, and if it is, use `right: 0` to position it instead.
