Actually the wording has changed <https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Gadget-Merge.js&diff=683895188> back in 2018, and this, together with more detailed error messages from the API (T180296 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T180296> / 77afa2c14ada <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/rEWBA77afa2c14ada34e920f70cab00c6621f9b82f8b7>), significantly reduced the number of such error reports. There are still such reports from time to time, but I’m not certain that this task is worth kept open.
