However, if that turns out to be more complicated than expected, a simpler improvement that might help would be to change the current “add statement, save, edit, add reference, save” into “add statement, add reference, save”, skipping the intermediate save-then-edit-again step. Nikki created this task.Nikki added a project: Wikidata.Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION(Note: "outdated" is being used here to only mean old but correct values.) Right now we don't have a way to indicate that statements are known to contain outdated information and should not be used unless you specifically want historical information. We are expected to infer it from the presence of other preferred statements or from qualifiers on the statement. However, it is not always possible or desirable to add/edit other statements, the qualifiers are not always easily accessible and there are multiple qualifiers which can be used to mark things as outdated. It is also not intuitive enough to users. The result is a lot of misuse of the deprecated rank. The proposed rank would behave like the existing deprecated rank but have different semantics. For example, statements with this rank would not be returned when using wdt: in the query service. Semantically it would mean that the statement is true but that the value is known to not reflect the most recent state of the item and therefore should only be used if you want historical information. It's not clear what the best name would be. Some ideas: "outdated", "historical", "superseded", "old value" Example 1: Person A marries Person B. They get divorced. We do not know if Person A remarried or not. We now know that the "spouse" statement on Person A is outdated, but we can't add another statement. If we use somevalue, that means they did remarry but we don't know who they married. If we use novalue, that means they did not remarry. Example 2: Item C has an identifier. The identifier is withdrawn and no longer works. People rarely want to use these identifiers since they don't work. They are usually either deleted or marked as deprecated. While we can add a second statement set to novalue with the preferred rank, that is not intuitive and is rarely done. It also seems undesirable - in most cases, we don't expect items to have a current value for an identifier, so the only purpose of the novalue statement is to override the original statement, there's no reason to add it otherwise. Example 3: Item D has 10 statements for a property (e.g. a river which flows through 10 countries or administrative divisions). One of these statements becomes outdated (e.g. country or administrative division stops existing). Instead of being able to edit the one statement which is known to be outdated, we have to edit all 10 statements - the one which is outdated to add an end date, the other 9 to mark them as preferred. This is very tedious and also rarely done.
