[WikiEducator] Award of UPE

2008-12-09 Thread Gita Mathur

Dear WikiEducator Friends
I am very happy to note today that I have been selected for the UPE
for December 2008. Do visit my page at [[User page:Gita_Mathur]].
I joined WikiEducator on October 2008 and I find this is a very strong
medium for Education the world over.
I attended a F2F worskhop on L4C in Delhi, October 3 to 5, 2008
organised by Savithri Singh and Anil Prasad and then an On Line L4C
workshop from November 24 to December 5, 2008, eL4C15, conducted by
Patricia Schlicht and Nellie Deutsch. I would like to thank all four
of them for guiding and inspiring me. I also thank all my co-
participanss at both the workshops who kept up a live interaction.
I will continue an active involvement at WikiEducator and hope to add
useful content.
Best Wishes to all.
Gita Mathur

[WikiEducator] Re: WikiEducator goes non-violent?

2008-12-09 Thread Alex P. Real
Maria,

I more or less share your definition (socialization is coercive),
particularly glaring in Maths. Only realized they could be fun when I
decided to unlearn and design my own learning environment to pass first year
Statistics. Since then I taught Statistics and quan methods to fellow
students, and they all passed by tearing down the unintelligible wall rather
than any bright skills of mine. Years have passed by and still Stats are the
daunting ogre and it's sad to see how many Sociology undergrads are
attracted to qual in rejection to Stats SPSS+, thus re-enacting the false
myth of quan- qual confrontation. Fairly common-sense, but shouldn't
research goals, variables of study budget define most appropriate methods
rather than any given assumption or preference?

Keep up with such fascinating work!

If we include coercive in the definition of violent then forcing kids
learn is an example of violent content. As a math educator, I see a lot of
kiddie torture related to my subject.

This is also a good example of how varied our definitions of violent
behavior can be. I meet very few people who share that definition.

[WikiEducator] WE e-Newsletter; Technical Discussion

2008-12-09 Thread aprasad
Dear friends,

(Please recall earlier discussions of e-Newsletter)

I am not that much sound in the technicalities of e-Newsletter, however let
me start this discussion with the following note.

I understand that we have following options with regards to an eNewsletter.

   - Text only newsletter: Newsletter will be in the text format and pasted
   in the mail.
   - Text and attached HTML version: Text version will be the part of the
email and HTML version will be an attachment.
   - Online eNewsletter: In this method HTML newsletter will be added to the
website and the link will be posted to those in the mailing list.
   - HTML only eNewsletter : It is seen reported that though most email
programs allow to send HTML only newsletters, it may create reading problems
   for some.

In the event of creating HTML newsletter http://www.phplist.com/ is an open
source option.

Your comments please…..

Shall we plan to start it in the New Year?

[WikiEducator] Re: WikiEducator goes non-violent?

2008-12-09 Thread Leigh Blackall
Socialisation is coercive, therefore violent...

Is this what you intended Gunther?

And what part does Wikieducator, OER, COL, UN and UNESCO play in other forms
of socialisation?

   - Cultural colonisation?
   - Legal imperialism?
   - Economic globalisation?
   - Political homogenisation?

Or did you simply intend to reference crude forms of violence like war and
physical assault Gunther?

[WikiEducator] Re: WE e-Newsletter; Technical Discussion

2008-12-09 Thread Wayne
Hi Anil --

Wow Anil --- You're dedication and the time you donate to WikiEducator
is an inspiration for all of us!

Following the wiki approach -- I think that it would be appropriate for
us to collaborate on the authorship of the newsletter in the wiki. We
can then decide on alternatives for distribution.

Given the large number of WikiEducator members from the developing
world, I would be mindful of including this as an html newsletter or
attachment. Perhaps the best will be to provide links to an online
version on the wiki and optional link to download in print format. When
working on dialup -- forced downloads of large messages can be
irritating :-)

The WikiEd technical team will be able to advise us on alternatives for
the distribution list --- but this can wait until we get the first
edition completed. Given that most of the Southern hemisphere will be
slowing down for the holiday season, I think you're right in waiting
till the new year.

[WikiEducator] 2008 Edublog awards

2008-12-09 Thread Wayne
Hi Everyone,

James over @ Edublogs posted an update message on the 2008 Edublog
awards. It seems that the polls are close, so if you haven't had a
chance to cast your vote for the best educational wiki --- now is the
time :-):

See: http://edublogawards.com/2008/best-educational-wiki-2008/

We also have a link from the home page on WE. Can't wait to see the
outcome of the rankings. Here is the text from James' post:

G'day Edublogs Awards subscriber,

The Edublog Awards has posted a new item, 'Votes flooding in, but every
poll
still close!'

We've had an incredible number of votes so far, approaching 1000 for
several
categories alone, and all the more impressive because that's limited to
different individual IPs.

Also, perhaps because of that, or maybe because we're hiding the %s,
almost
every category is on a knife edge!

Cheers
Wayne
