[WikiEducator] Re: NGO in education and curriculum

2009-05-13 Thread john stampe
Hi, Leo

I am an environmental engineer, who has also been involved previously with some
environmental organizations (such as the Audubon Society). I would
be interested in collaborating with you on environmental or conservation issues.

In fact I have considered setting up a environmental education portal on WE.

[WikiEducator] Open Access Tracking Project

2009-05-13 Thread john stampe
WE members may be interested in a new collaborative project recently launched
on keeping track of open access (OA) news (including open education) called the
open access tracking project (OATP). As Peter Suber describes it

The idea is to tag new OA developments and recruit others to do the same.  On
the many-eyeballs principle, we'll notice many more new developments together
than any of us could notice on our own.  A group feed will broadcast the
results of what we notice to everyone who wants to follow along.
So if you find an article on open access you can the tag it. To tag the feeds
you need an account at Connotea http://www.connotea.org/. You then tag the
article with oa.new and any other tags you wish (for example, oa.education or
oa.india).

The articles can be read by webpage
(http://www.connotea.org/tag/oa.new?num=100), RSS
(http://www.connotea.org/rss/tag/oa.new), or e-mail
(http://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/mailverify?uri=ConnoteaBookmarksMatchingTagOanewloc=en_US).

More information can be found in Peter's SOAN newsletter
http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/fos/newsletter/05-02-09.htm

A message to all members of Classroom 2.0

An exciting new Classroom 2.0 webinar series for beginners will kick
off on Wednesday, May 13 at 5pm Pacific / 8pm Eastern / 12am GMT. The
first set will be a three-part series Go Wild with Wikis and will be
hosted on Elluminate and facilitated by Sue Waters, Edublogs Community
Facilitator.

In the first session Sue will take you on a guided tour of what are
wikis, why educators use wikis, and how to use wikis for their own
professional learning and/or with their students. In future sessions
you will gradually learn step-by-step details about the different
features of a Wikispaces wiki including how to set it up, manage it
and add content.

While our beginner series focus is helping educators new to web
technologies learn more about how they can use these tools with their
students it will also provide 'takeaways' for the more experienced
users.  All sessions will be recorded and archived at
http://live.classroom20.com/.

We hope you will join us!

[WikiEducator] Options for Activity Template

2009-05-13 Thread Alison

I'd like to create an activity (using Template:Activity or
Template:Activity2) that provides a set of instructions and the
results for each instruction (either in words or a screenshot image)
if completed accurately. I've thought of two ways of doing this, but I
can't figure out how to do either.
1) integrate an expand link that reveals the results when selected.

2) include a two column table -- instructions, results

(And maybe there are other even better methods.)

The draft activity is at:

http://www.wikieducator.org/OpenOffice/Calc_3/Getting_to_know_the_application/Locating_the_components_of_the_Calc_Screen

All help is much appreciated.

more than a dozen teachers in our partner schools for providing

via Slashdot http://slashdot.org/ by kdawson on 5/10/09

T-1000, appropriately enough, lets us know about a California initiative to
compile open source science and math textbooks for the state, in the hopes
of saving money. The effort is spearheaded by Gov. Schwarzenegger. The
effort seems very promising, but the state's complex standards and arduous
textbook evaluation process will pose major challenges. ... The governator
will surely be able to stop the digital textbooks from gaining sentience and
subjugating humanity, but there are trickier challenges that will be even
tougher to defeat than the impending Skynet apocalypse. Textbooks are a
surprisingly controversial issue in California and there is a lot of
political baggage and bureaucratic red tape that will make an open source
textbook plan especially troublesome. ... [T]he traditional wiki approach is
untenable for California teaching material. Individual changes to textbooks
can become a source of fierce debate and there are a multitude of special
interest groups battling over what the textbooks should say and how they
should say it. It would take the concept of Wikipedia edit wars to a whole
new level.
