Re: [WikiEducator] To save our PLANET; a new year resolution

2009-12-29 Thread Sarita Kumar
Respected Sir,

I think it's a great idea and wonderful resolution. You are really a great
inspiration to all of us.

I read your article on 'To save our planet' and other general articles on
your blog. They are wonderful. In fact, I registered myself as UNO Volunteer
and thinking of writing some articles. Hopefully, I will be able to do that.

New Years are the ideal time for new resolutions; it is a custom also. I
would like to propose a New Year resolution for 2010. What shall WE, as one
of the strongest open community of Educators who believe in open
philanthropy, do to save our PLANET?

The dangers being faced by our PLANET - the most precious planet in the
vicinity of science so far - are getting very much visible now. The
situations necessitate urgent attention and action. I feel that if the
future environmental situations would force the world population to queue up
for the daily ration of oxygen supply, floating over water and wearing heavy
insulated suits, all prosperity would mean nothing but a curse. Value of
money will be lost once the PLANET is sick. We do not want this nightmare to
 happen.

As Educators we have the responsibility to thoroughly study the dangers
being faced by our lovely PLANET and share it with others. We also have the
responsibility to help governments, educational institutions and other
organizations to formulate and implement remedial measures.

Let us take a resolution; during 2010 we would contribute at least one
open-educational-content in this matter. Since the issue is about our
PLANET, it covers all disciplines of study. The Scientists in our WE family
may come forward with alternate planet-friendly open technologies to replace
any existing technology that substantially ruins our PLANET.

I also add copy of this mail to United Nations Framework Convention on
Climate Change so that they can also provide valuable inputs to our
 discussion.

[WikiEducator] Have you seen the illegal AFS English publications?

2009-12-29 Thread Mary
Eslprintables is a website for teachers to exchange their worksheets. One
dishonest member in Turkey downloaded the best worksheets and ppublished
them in his expensive series of English teaching materials.

http://afsyayincilik-thieves.blogspot.com/ is a campaign started by the
owner of eslprintables to stop him.

Since our group is an international group, maybe someone has a contact in
Turkey who can help get the word out by telling other teachers not to buy
the AFS materials since they are stolen.

[WikiEducator] New Year's Resolutions

2009-12-29 Thread Steve Foerster
Anil,

Interesting post! I agree that New Year's resolutions are in order, but
that we shouldn't lose sight of our mission, even if it's to acknowledge
other important issues.

So given that our mission is to develop open educational resources, what
might be great to hear is what content each of us resolves to complete
and add to WE in the coming year.

That way, for example, those who share your concern about environmental
matters can resolve to use WE as a platform for building educational
resources that address that issue. I believe Edward Cherlin indicated
he was already doing this.

I suppose I shouldn't suggest this without being willing to go first?
So, I've meant for some time to get Marshall's Principles of Economics
wikified so that it can updated to serve today's students. With the
WYSIWYG editor now available at least in beta, I resolve to get at least
this much done in 2010.

Re: [WikiEducator] To save our PLANET; a new year resolution

2009-12-29 Thread Wong Leo
For saving world issues like Weather , Animal protection , those issues are
too big to be solved by one country , and We is the Perfect place where we
can work together .

However , is there any sustainable way to do this

From What I have been doing with Conservation curriculum to do with schools
in China and US and Iran and German too

1 we can build a Curriculum material together in WE
2 call educator who are intersted in implementing the curriculum and report
back to us how it is going in their classroom
3 share each other progress and give more feedback , or teacher traning for
them to improve the WE material on this issue

so far I have been doing this on my own spare time for last 3 years , right
now , we are dealing with a African Elephant protection program , which
involved 39 schools in China readmore here http://helpchina.wikispaces.com (
it is mostly in Chinese , you can use GOOGLE translation to read this )

I am excited to work together with any of you who are interested in not
only making a new year resolution and put something in WE but also actually
use it in your classroom or communities near you

please reply here or get in contact with me

[WikiEducator] Teaching with Historic Places

2009-12-29 Thread Real Santander
I recently asked a friend of mine, Robert Sandoval for an explanation
of the Park Service's 'Teaching with Historic Places' program. Robert
used to work in the Historic Landmarks office in Washington and has a
Masters in History from George Mason University. I wanted to find a
resource to teach my daughter about history and historic
preservation. His answer follows:

Dear Sandy,

So good to hear from you again and I hope I can help. If you
remember, when we were in graduate school, I interned at the Park
Service and had a chance to work on the Civil Rights Travel Itinerary
and assist with a Teaching with Historic Places based on the same
Civil Rights sites.

Officially, Teaching with Historic Places (TwHP) is a program of the
National Park Service's Heritage Education Services office. Over the
years TwHP has developed a variety of products and services. These
include a series of lesson plans; guidance on using places to teach;
information encouraging educators, historians, preservationists, site
interpreters, and others to work together effectively; and
professional development publications and training courses.
Basically, TwHP uses the historic sites listed on the National
Register and National Historic Landmarks to help teach and illustrate
historic themes in American history. Students learn to use primary
sources (documents, photos, maps, etc.) to analyze historic events and
relate them to broader themes in American history. Some of the
lessons include Civil War, Historic Preservation, Women’s History, and
the Industrial Revolution.

The lesson plans can be used for all grade levels and students and
teachers can even create their own. You should go the TwHP website
(http://www.nps.gov/history/NR/twhp/index.htm) to see all the plans.
Hope this has helped.

I went to the site and found some very good lesson plans and my
daughter really enjoys the photos and maps.
