Re: [WikiEducator] Joint COL UNESCO OER Publications available on WikiEducator
Dear Dr. Wayne and Patricia, Initially I also thought in the same lines, however on second thought I felt that we may require policies to keep CC-BY or CC-BY-SA originals and derivatives. Definitely it is not to limit the freedom, but purely on research interest. Similarly, as we go on with OERu system, there would be chances that some institutions in the network might request to add their CC-BY of CC-BY-SA materials on WE with a provision to keep the originals while giving all freedom for making derivative works- may be due to resource constraint to maintain their own setup for hosting such materials etc etc Moreover I think, once edited we may not be able to use descriptions like A joint COL-UNESCO OER Publication etc as we see in the header template. Hope my thoughts are not going wild :) On Thu, Dec 1, 2011 at 8:39 AM, Patricia Schlicht pschli...@col.org wrote: Dear Anil, Thanks for your comments. HI Kathreen, Me too like this discussion. I'm currently compiling a questionnaire to send to University of Mauritius academics to see whether (if at all) they are aware of OERs and using them and collaborating . I hope to be surprised, given that we've had many OER-related workshops..but nothing has taken off seriously enough, ..and yes will add the appreciative enquiry method for my classes Thanks for that and the Wooboard too..Looks fun! RE: [WikiEducator] Joint COL UNESCO OER Publications available on WikiEducator
Dear Anil, In my personal view your suggestion, to want to develop a policy, to prevent cc-by and cc-by-sa originals and derivatives from any changes, would defeat the purpose of these copyright licenses, but I know what you are saying. I also appreciate the fact that you want to differ between an original version and an upgrade, so I suggest the following: 1. We would as Wayne already suggested insert the link to a pdf document, this way, keeping the original as is; and 2. We could insert another Tab in the book template, to enable our community to suggest changes under the book headers, by chapter. This way, any changes can be documented, provided our editors enter them. This would need to be monitored. 3. Advantage: The book will be updated and added-value to. Let me know what you think. Hi Anil Thanks for your suggestion. In this instance, your objective has been achieved. There is already a static versions available for download from multiple sites, so no need for a policy decision in my view. Moreover, there are other sites which can accommodate static versions of publications like this including the recently announced UNESCO OER portal. The time and effort to constitute an official WIkiEducator Workgrouphttp://wikieducator.org/Workgroup:WikiEducator_Workgroups/Guidelines to develop a policy proposal for static versions of documents published by third parties would appear to be unproductive use of community time. Re: [WE Teacher Collaboration] Re: [WikiEducator] Joint COL UNESCO OER Publications available on WikiEducator
Dear Dr. Wayne, There are two scenarios that keep on triggering my thoughts in this direction :) Scenario one: Disappearances of existing OERs: I think V. Krishna Moorthy’s comment on one of my google + updates can provide a picturesque description of the scenario “Many OERs I see them disappearing from their respective servers due to want of funds or personnel or no-takers. Immediate efforts should be to mirror them, as per need, by permissions, in a way they can ride on a permanent cloudswho will bell the right CAT for such operations” Scenario Two: In future, if some educational institution in the OERu network want to add their study materials in WE with CC-BY or CC-BY-SA freedoms and request us to provide a facility to keep the originals to be used by the teachers as well as students of their ongoing courses, while giving freedom to WE community and members in the OERu network to copy the content to other WE pages or other sites for developing derivative works (the scenario one can become the reason for such a request) – how shall we handle this scenario? On Fri, Dec 2, 2011 at 10:13 AM, Wayne Mackintosh mackintosh.wa...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Anil Thanks for your suggestion. In this instance, your objective has been achieved. There is already a static versions available for download from multiple sites, so no need for a policy decision in my view. The time and effort to constitute an official WIkiEducator Workgrouphttp://wikieducator.org/Workgroup:WikiEducator_Workgroups/Guidelines to develop a policy proposal for static versions of documents published by third parties would appear to be unproductive use of community time. [WikiEducator] Problem with references
I am helping Mumbai University to create OER in WE. Am facing a few problems: 1. When we use the ref /ref syntax it works on a normal page i.e. on clicking the ref it connects to the references at the end of page BUT when we use templates on the page, it doesn't. See http://wikieducator.org/Introduction_to_Cost_Concepts 2. Am not able to access messages since the last week or so. 3. While using templates on a page we seem to be able to edit using only the EDIT button top of page - would like to break pages into smaller pieces so that they can be edited ( we normally do this through titling sections!!) - how can this be done? An early response would be useful!! Thanks.
