Winner for July 2014: Alison Snieckus

 Dear Friends,

The WikiEducator User Page Expo http://wikieducator.org/UPE (UPE
to its friends) is an ongoing event to acknowledge WikiEducator user pages
that are particularly informative, innovative, visually appealing, or
 otherwise just plain clever.

We are happy to announce the winner for July 2014. She is Alison
 Snieckus. Lets meet her :-)
 July 2014

 http://wikieducator.org/File:ASnieckus.jpg

Alison Snieckus http://wikieducator.org/User:ASnieckus is a trained
educational measurement specialist. From 1986 to 2000 she worked at
Educational Testing Service (ETS, the makers of the famed SAT, TOEFL,
GRE). Later on due to personal reasons she gave up her job at ETS.
She, alongwith a fellow homeschooling parent started homeschooling, and
founded a local group for teens to have the opportunity to study and
collaborate together: E-cubed: Experience, Explore, Educate
https://sites.google.com/site/ecubednj/. Here once per week sessions
are designed around teen-led activities. Since the group was founded, it
has grown over the years. In 2009-2010, she taught a hybrid course in
Introductory Statistics to 5 secondary students who homeschool. The online
portion of the course was provided by Carnegie Mellon University's Open
Learning Initiative. The goal of the course is to encourage students to
think statistically, to communicate accurately and comprehensively about
data, and to use a critical framework to evaluate studies. In Fall 2010 and
Fall 2011, She taught Statistical Methods II for the Graduate School of
Education at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. She advocates for
an educational system which better recognizes and values the rich potential
of individual variation among human beings. She argues on why do we think
that all children should be force-fed a curriculum based on a narrow set of
common standards, devised, largely, at the beginning of the last century?
She has truly identified that every child (and certainly every teenager)
deserves the option to self-direct his/her own education with the help of
 caring adults!

Please join us in congratulating Alison
http://wikieducator.org/User:ASnieckus for being the UPE winner for
 July 2014!

completing my MA. My credentials with Royal Roads University can be

I am conducting a survey as a requirement for my Master of Arts in
Education and Technology degree at Royal Roads University. The purpose of
the study is to examine the experiences of instructors in the adoption of
 open textbooks.

Open Educational Resources have been defined by the William and Flora
Hewlett Foundation as, “teaching, learning and research resources that
reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual
property license that permits their free use and re-purposing by others.”

Open educational resources include full courses, course materials,
modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools,
materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge. Instructors
and librarians can provide very insightful information about their
experiences with the implementation of open education resources. With your
help, we can gain insight into OER and open textbook adoption practices.

If you agree to participate, you will be asked to participate in an
interview (which will take approximately 60-90 minutes and will be
recorded. Participants have the option of selecting either video or voice
chat) regarding your experiences and opinions about OER implementation. The
identifying information you provide will be kept confidential. Neither your
name nor any identifying information will be published, nor will anyone
else be able to see your answers. I will be asking you to respond as an
individual, not as a representative of your institution.

As a participant, you are free to stop the interview at any time. If you
decide to before, during, or after the semi-structured interview, your
qualitative data will not be included in the study results. If you wish to
withdraw from the study during or after they have given the interview, your
interview responses and other data obtained during the interview will not
be included in the research findings, and will be securely destroyed.

Shortly after the interview has been completed, I will send you a copy of
the transcript to give you an opportunity to confirm the accuracy of our
conversation and to add or clarify any points. After completing the
interview there will be a debrief letter and contact information should you
wish to ask questions of request the results of the research.

Data collected during this study will be retained for up to two years in
secure storage to which only the principal researcher associated with this
project will have access. There are no known or anticipated risks to you as
 a participant in this study.

If you would like more information about the research, or to be made
aware of the results of the research, please contact Danielle Paradis at
 danielle.para...@royalroads.ca.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to your involvement.

Attached you will find the informed consent form. Please sign and return
to me. After that, we will find a mutually agreeable time to perform the
 interview.

 Regards,
 Danielle Paradis

 Hi Everyone,

Do we have any graphic designers on the list who could help out with
converting the WikiEducator and Learning4Content brochures into open file
formats, including updates on the contact particulars and any refinements we
would like to make to the text of the brochures?

WikiEducator has two brochures that were produced while WE was operating as
a project under the Commonwealth of Learning. Naturally, the text and images
were released under open content licenses :-) and we can create derivative
 works.

I need help to update the contact particulars with reference to the OER
Foundation etc. The original brochures were developed using non-free file
formats and I would also like the source files of the brochures to be
 converted into open file formats.

If any graphic designers have a few hours to gift to help us convert the
brochures into open file formats (using, and open source DTP tool like
Scribus: http://www.scribus.net) -- please send me an email or offer for
help by return post on this list.

You can view the old versions of the brochures here:

-
http://wikieducator.org/Image:WikiEducator_brochure_PrintCropped-1.pdf
- http://wikieducator.org/Image:L4C_brochure_web-1.pdf

Of course suggestions on improving and updating the copy / text of the
brochures are also well received :-)

Many thanks -- let's make the future happen together!

 Cheers

[WikiEducator] Re: Text tables beautification

2008-08-19 Thread Pankaj

Dear all,

I was reading all the discussion on Text and Table formatting with a
lot interest. Layouting is a difficult proposition for many, and
particularly when we deal with Tables. I learnt most of it by hit and
trial or by making use of what is available on MediaWiki or done by
others.

Friends, do you all agree with me that the community needs a short
training on this? Couple of Community member experts in Tables/
formatting text, like Brent and Peter could resource this (and I can
assist -:)) in more systematic way. We can have pages created as
Tutorials and can follow the same system as of L4C. We can name it
WikiEd Handson Advance Training (WHAT).

Any comments?

[WikiEducator] Re: how to creat a subpage in other than English language

2008-05-05 Thread Pankaj

Dear Leo,

You can create subpages in other languages in the same way as you do
in English. For example to create a subpage on 图书馆/课程, please type
[[ 图书馆/课程]] and you can have the subpage on this. You may like to
provide different name to the link and for use pipe seperator. The
syntax will thus be [[图书馆/课程|图书馆/]]]. I have done one on this at my
test pages http://www.wikieducator.org/User:Pankaj/TEST.

workshop/participant subpage for workshop page ,

but how could it be possible to creat the subpage under a Chinese character
based wiki page , for example ͼ/γ

it has been always recongnasised as Non-human read in Chinese wiki

the reason Why I ask this question is a lot of times when you look for
certain content in wiki , you would use search right ? so if you creat page
in English , the Chinese user could not find it

is there any other way can solve this problems ?

It is not a mainstream question but really a problem for me

[WikiEducator] Re: Please set me straight on user talk/discussion pages

2008-01-28 Thread Pankaj

Declan

I find User talk and discussion pages helpful in improving the pages
without disturbing by editing. In community, I feel, the initiator has
first right to accept the edits. Here, the comments on discussion
pages will help in improving the pages by the author. Still, we
sometimes do not tend to open Discussion pages. To overcome this,
during development of CCNC modules
http://www.wikieducator.org/index.php?title=CCNC/CCNC_Module_1,
we used Template{{Note|See my comments in the discussion area}} in the
page. It worked.

On the other hand, I am also facing the same problem as yours on New
Messages. I am also not finding any Message though WikiEd puts it on
my pages YOU HAVE A NEW MESSAGE...
