Hello all,

Hope this email finds you all in the best of your health, and
you are staying safe amid the ongoing crisis.

In one of the recent threads on this mailing list, community
members expressed their doubts regarding Wiki Loves Monuments
2020, considering the COVID-19 pandemic. It was glad that to
see various suggestions coming up regarding how to go about
it. To facilitate the same, the International Team will be
conducting two office hour sessions on 6 & 7 June 2020, in
various time slots, making for people across the to take part
and share their ideas. During these sessions, we will start
off with WLM 2019 surveys, how do we see Wiki Loves Monuments
as an international competition in 2020, and about
organising Wiki Loves Monuments as national competition -
various potential challenges, opportunities, and ways of doing
it. Inputs shared during these sessions will be crucial in
making a decision regarding organising WLM 2020.

Details of the sessions:

  * 6 June 2020 (Saturday) - 5 pm to 7 pm UTC (10 am - 12 pm

  * 7 June 2020 (Sunday) - 6:30 am to 8:30 am UTC at

Agenda for the both the sessions is the same, two
different sessions are being conducted to enable people from
various parts of the world to attend according to their
convenience.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 ?

2020-04-13 Thread Alex Stinson
Hi all,

I wanted to endorse the idea of "increasing usage of previously uploaded
photos, improving respective Wikipedia articles, working on categorization
etc." described by Anton. Wiki Loves Africa has been able to get quite a
bit of good community engagement using the ISA tool
https://tools.wmflabs.org/isa/ to bring attention to the media files and
improve their discoverability.

Also, as I have been going through the files on Commons in my volunteer
capacity adding Structured Data, I have identified a ton of different "Wiki
Loves" imagines without categories, or other basic metadata (i.e. good
descriptions/captions of what is in the image).

Cheers,

Alex

Hi everyone

Here's a quick overview of what Wiki Loves Earth has done or plans to do in
the wake of the pandemic. Some of the measures will not be relevant for
WLM, of course; but maybe something will be useful.

* Extending the timeframe for the international contest by one month
(through July 30th) so as to give local teams more time to prepare & an
opportunity to move the contest to a later date.
* Communicating with local teams about the ban on WMF-funded public offline
events & discussing the opportunities of moving some of the events online
(and extending our funding guide

for local teams).
* Encouraging participants to dig into their archives instead of actively
taking photos, as well as to obey all local restrictions on walking and
travel.
* Encouraging and incentivizing non-photographic activities, such as
increasing usage of previously uploaded photos, improving respective
Wikipedia articles, working on categorization etc.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 ?

2020-04-11 Thread effe iets anders
Hi Nicolas, all,

thanks for bringing up the question, which may well be on the minds of
many. I have not coordinated this response in the international team, but
this is based on my best understanding of our situation.

You're entirely correct that there are many uncertainties. It's hard to
look ahead more than a week or two, let alone 4 months. At this point, I
don't believe that it's wise to make assumptions where we will be in
September, or make decisions based on those assumptions. Because things may
be better (we all hope!) but they may also be much worse. Over the next
months, the international team will keep a close eye on the situation and
develop scenarios what we can do, and what we can't. I expect that we will
make some kind of decision by early July.

I want to acknowledge that this brings an extra layer of uncertainty for
all the hundreds of volunteers involved with Wiki Loves Monuments across
the world. Unfortunately, we're currently not in a position to make a clear
cut decision. I do want to make clear that of course we would never ask or
encourage anyone to go against shelter orders or otherwise endanger people
- and I expect the national teams will feel the same about this.

If you're looking for things that you can do at this time in preparation
that will be worthwhile irrespective of the outcome of WLM 2020, I
encourage to take the time to reflect on your data infrastructure. How can
we improve the data quality, how can we establish better uniformity? If
people are interested in that, we should spin up a separate thread, and see
how different countries can help each other on this. This kind of data
structures are useful no matter when it becomes sound again to go out and
take photos.

I hope everyone is safe and stays safe - no matter what the situation in
your country looks like. If there are specific concerns you have aside from
these, please do reach out.

With warm regards from California,

Lodewijk

2020-04-11 Thread Ilario valdelli

The opening will not be "go out" for everyone and in every condition.

Probably during summer there will be a lot of limitations too.

KInd regards

But a great contest for lockdown would be a contest for scanning and
uploading ones pre digital photographs.

Hi all,

Given the current situation, has anyone (in the international tema
or in local team) explored how and if Wiki Loves Monuments 2020
would happen?

We start to think about it in France, there is a wish to make it
despite the COVID. But for now, we are mainly looking at options
as there is a lot of uncertainties.

PS: Can anyone make a script counting how many photos submitted at
WLM are taken before september? Our assumption is that a lot -
most ? - photos are taken long before september, which can be a
good thing - people have a "stock" of photos on their hard drive -
or a bad thing - people usually take photo now, but most countries
are in lockdown now... So, it depends on the statistics.

I hope you're all well and safe.

Cheers,
~nicolas

2020-04-11 Thread Mohammed Bachounda
Hello,

With everything that has happened in the world, with this pandemic, with
these unlikely situations, the community, are we sure that we have to
cancel and hide? Yes, we are afraid to take the maximum safety measures to
protect ourselves and our loved ones.
I say that the wiki loves monuments must take place on the same date with
the same energy and in the same timeline.
We should adjust, we have a lot of cards to play and we will end up giving
this power to the rest of the world, our community knows no boundaries,
doesn’t need funding, we are all volunteers.
This message is for all of us to bring new hope to those who are fighting
to heal the planet from this disease.
Take action, an action, as we all know.

Wiki Loves Earth is currently deciding what to do, too. The organisers are
considering having the contest even though it is even earlier than WLM. You
can ask them, as well.

Given the timings, it is very possible that some countries will be out of
lockdown in time for a photography contest in a few months.

But a great contest for lockdown would be a contest for scanning and
uploading ones pre digital photographs.
