[Wikimania-l] Video recording of Wikimania sessions

2015-07-17 Thread Guillaume Paumier
Hello,

First of all, I want to congratulate and thank the Wikimania organizing team
for putting together one of the best-organized Wikimanias I've attended. It's
easy to only notice the problems, so I wanted to call out the great work
explicitly.

My main disappointment this year is that many sessions seem to go unrecorded.
In previous years, I seem to recall that videos for most sessions were
recorded, and sometimes even streamed live. It sometimes took months for the
videos to be processed and uploaded to Commons or other video hosting sites,
but the videos existed. If the session isn't taped at all, then the record is
lost forever.

We have a lot of talented presenters giving insightful talks and generating
great discussions, but only for the benefit of the small subset of our
community that's present in the room. If we can't share what happens at
Wikimania with our larger community, it seems like a missed opportunity for
our movement. Even for Wikimania attendees, when there are up to 8
simultaneous tracks, it's easy to miss sessions you're interested in.

I realize it's probably too late to do anything for this year's Wikimania, but
I'd like to start a discussion about making video recordings of all sessions
(not just a selection of them) a requirement for upcoming Wikimania bids.

[Wikimania-l] Tool to add yourself to the list of interested attendees on Submissions pages

2015-03-07 Thread Guillaume Paumier
Hey Wikimaniacs,

If you're like me, you may find it a bit cumbersome to add yourself to
the list of Interested attendees on Submissions pages. It only takes
a few clicks and keystrokes, but multiply that by the number of
sessions you're interested in and *poof* your afternoon is gone.

Because I care about your afternoons (and about mine!), I've written a
user script this morning that lets you do it in one click. If you'd
like to use it, go to
https://wikimania2015.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyPage/common.js and
add:

importScript('User:Guillom/addme.js');

The script seems to mostly do what it's supposed to do, but I'm still
new to JavaScript so if you notice something wrong, let me know on my
talk page. More experienced JavaScript authors are also welcome to
review and improve the script and/or turn it into a gadget so that all
users can use it.

HTH,

[Wikimania-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia-l] Introducing Ellie Young as Conference Coordinator

2013-03-27 Thread Guillaume Paumier
Of interest to the wikimania-l crowd.

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Introducing Ellie Young as Conference Coordinator
To: wikimedi...@lists.wikimedia.org, Ellie Young eyo...@wikimedia.org

Hi all,

Please join me in welcoming Ellie Young, who is taking on the role of
Conference Coordinator as an annual contract with WMF.[1]

As you may know, WMF's support for Wikimania in recent years has been
spread across a variety of staff members who have other core
responsibilities. With this new contract, we're creating a single point of
contact to act as liaison between WMF and the Wikimania organizing team, to
ensure that we're able to provide the host team with focused support where
help from WMF is needed.

Ellie brings with her a lot of experience in event planning for open
culture communities. She worked as Executive Director of USENIX
Association for over 20 years, where she and her team supported several
international conferences hosted by volunteers each year.[2] She also
currently serves on The Ada Initiative's Board of Advisors and has been an
activist for the democratization of educational materials most of her life.

Fun things we’ve learned about Ellie: Both sets of her grandparents helped
build the Panama Canal, and each generation since has had a pilot or two
doing transits of the ships. She has been to every country in Latin America
and the Caribbean except Brasil. You can often catch her hiking in the SF
East Bay Hills with her adorable mini-poodle, Jack.

As Conference Coordinator, Ellie will be facilitating and supporting the
work of the Wikimania host team and making sure there is good continuity
and knowledge-transfer as the conference moves to new hosts year-over-year.
She is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and will be sometimes working
from the SF office (sitting on the 3rd floor near HR). Ellie would like to
hear from you on all things Wikimania, so please do stop by or email her
anytime!

Huge thanks to all staff and volunteers who helped us craft this role and
interview candidates.

Welcome, Ellie!

I'd like to +1 this. It was done for the hackathon badges in 2011 iirc
and it was great. It makes it easier for introverts (of which there is
no shortage among Wikimedians) to start conversations.

It's probably not enough (meaning it needs to be supplemented with
other mechanisms to facilitate interaction, including in smaller
groups and/or more quiet venues) but it's a good start.

[Wikimania-l] Food at the party tonight?

Does anyone know if food will be provided at the party tonight? I
couldn't find any information about the party on the Wikimania wiki,
apart from a link to where it's happening.

Thanks :)

There will also be shuttles leaving from the hotels later (more details are
in the shuttle schedule in the mini conf guide).

Is there only one shuttle leaving for the beach party from the venue, or
 several at different times ?

I must say I am not terribly excited with the idea of going to a beach
party with all my gear and in particular laptop, but droping it at the
hotel would require a little break to do so. And a shuttle leaving at
17h15 does not permit this. Any clarification ? :)

Re: [Wikimania-l] What to do about 2012, and the future

As someone who attended Wikimania 2007, 2010 and is now spending countless

will be held once every two years (biannually) and not annually.

A lot of interesting things have been said in this thread already, and
I'll admit I haven't read all the long responses. I just wanted to
express my agreement with the belief that, as the Wikimedia movement
grows worldwide, more and more small conferences and events will be
organized all year long, or simultaneously for celebrations like the
Wikipedia anniversary.

I think Wikimedia local groups will gain in experience with events
smaller than Wikimania, and will then be able to provide strong
Wikimania bids conferences. Besides, Wikimania doesn't have to grow
much larger than it is now, if Wikimedians have regional conferences
and events they can attend.

In a word, as we grow, I think it'll become easier for the global
Wikimedia community to organize both small and large events, Wikimania
included.

 along those lines I guess.
