 My thinking is that if WMDE can produce an accounting for a major event's
 expenses to the degree to which they have visibility (this excludes
 chapter-funded travel costs, and WMF and affiliate staff compensation) in a
 few months, then at least that level of detail should be expected for
 Wikimedia accounting within, say, 6 months after the event. Creating a
 standardized framework for large event expense reporting might be a good
 step. Given WMDE's success, perhaps WMF could build off of their framework
 to create a shared framework for public reporting of financial expenses for
 all major WMF funded events (All-staff and hackathons included).

 Well done for WMDE being so prompt with the accounts, but I'm not sure
 it's a methodology for budgeting accounting which accounts for the

 More the relative scale of and the resources applied to each event.

First I'm not sure if just under $1m is the net cost, or the expenditure
only - the 2013-14 figures give 143,219 as Special event expense,
net. Secondly I very much doubt that it's the highest expense.

Here's some figures for 2013-14

* Purchase of computer equipment and office furniture 1,591,166
* Depreciation 2,722,007
* Salaries   19,979,908
* Internet hosting 2,529,483
* Travel and conferences 1,965,854

Because of VAT issues with the London venue (I won’t go into the details here
but it wasn’t something that WMF or the local team had any control over…) , we
were finally able to get final accounting done in June, but that coincided with
being in the midst of Wikimania ’15 preparations. We will have an accounting
in the next month published.

WMF handled all the finances so this really isn’t anything Ed is involved in.

Thanks for your patience,
