2013-05-31 Thread Thehelpfulone
I've gone ahead and updated
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/cabal-l to reflect this.
You'll notice that some of the language has been simplified, and the
password fields have been removed because this list has public archives and
the subscriber list is only viewable by list admins, so there's no real
need to know your password for this list. Unfortunately this still reverts
to old design for other languages but I'm working on seeing if there's a
way to fix that.

Isarra (and anyone else) can you see any issues with the newer design in
terms of usability? As a reminder the source is at

  Feedback, please.

I would love to see this design or something similar become the default
for Wikimedia's mailing lists. Compared to the current default,[1] I
 find
the new design vastly more friendly and engaging.

Can't be the default because it's English only, isn't it. A workaround
could be to remove custom linguistic content (for instance make About
Wikimedia Foundation just Wikimedia and point it to some translatable
page on Meta), but I've no idea how localisation of all this works.

Well, this *recommended* template could substitute the current default
 which
doesn't offer localized links either. An improvement is an improvement,
 and
I think the improvement for users is huge.

Then it is up to the admins of each list to implement this template or
 not,
to take it as is or with modifications e.g. links to Spanish content for
your Spanish speaking list. It's just a piece of HTML to be pasted in a
 web
  form.

Just give me a day or so to implement feedback and clean the code, and
 then
the template will be ready to be applied by list admins with a simple
  copypaste, with optional customization.

[Wikimedia-l] Wikivoyage logo

2013-05-31 Thread Maggie Dennis
Hello, all.

I've just posted an announcement by legal on Meta (
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikivoyage/Logo_announcement) about the
Wikivoyage logo - unfortunately, we are going to have to choose a new one.
To save you all from having to click on the link, I'll reproduce the
announcement at the bottom of my email.

Sometime in the next couple of weeks, we will need to launch a contest for
the new Wikivoyage logo, but first I'm hoping to get feedback and
assistance in making the best process for that possible. We had been
considering ways to optimize logo selection by the community, with the idea
that we would have plenty of time to talk about the process before needing
it. Unfortunately, we now need something quite quickly. Accordingly, I'd be
really grateful for feedback on the process, which has been posted here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Logo_contest_procedure

You can read a little more about it here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Logo_contest_procedure

I hope you will share your questions, comments and suggestions there.

Thanks.

Maggie

As many of you know, the community held a contest to design and decide upon
the new logo that would come to represent Wikivoyage, the latest open and
collaborative project to be hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. After
review of quite a few fantastic entries and much debate, the logo below was
decided upon by community consensus: [omitted; see linked discussion]

Unfortunately, both the Foundation and several members of the community
discovered that the eventually chosen logo bore a striking resemblance to
the World Trade Organization (“WTO”) logo: [omitted; see linked discussion]

At that time, the Foundation reviewed the two logos and believed that,
while some risk existed, there were significant enough differences between
the designs and the markets the two organizations occupied for both logos
to co-exist.

Since then, the Foundation has received a cease-and-desist letter from the
WTO, requesting that we change the logo. While we wish that the WTO agreed
with our assessment that the two logos contain substantial differences and
could co-exist, we understand their concern. We still believe that there
are some significant differences between the Wikivoyage logo and the WTO,
however, such arguments are not guaranteed to win if we were to legally
oppose this request because there are also some substantial similarities.
With this in mind, as well as the fact that the Wikivoyage logo is still
relatively new and has not had a chance to build significant brand
recognition yet, we believe the better solution is to hold a new community
contest for a new logo.

We believe that the community is the best body to decide what logo should
represent their hard work and hope that interested community members will
take this opportunity to once again showcase their creativity and talent by
submitting designs. The WTO has been very understanding of the Wikimedia
movement’s values and need for community consensus and has agreed to grant
us ample time to develop a new logo through community processes. (Please
see the proposed Logo contest
procedurehttp://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Logo_contest_procedure.)
That said, we hope to begin the process of community consultation and input
in the next few days so that the new logo can be in place by the end of
July. With that, we look forward to seeing new designs!

[Wikimedia-l] WMF Board and FDC's elections - delay by one week

2013-05-31 Thread Katie Chan
The Election Committee regrets to advise that it is necessary to delay
the start of voting in the WMF Elections 2013 for one week. This delay
is being implemented for three reasons:

* We have been unable to verify that the list of eligible voters is
complete and that all voters meet the published criteria
* We have been unable to verify that the SecurePoll setups for the
election are properly functioning
* The voter interfaces have not been translated and are not currently
available in any language other than English, thus disadvantaging
Wikimedians who do not read English.

The following changes are now made to the Election timeline:
*8-22 June 2013: elections
*23-25 June 2013: vote-checking
*25-28 June: publication of results.

For the Election Committee,

KTC

 Dear all,

From June 8, Wikimedia Mexico will co-produce Möebius a weekly radio
program in Ibero 90.9 FM [1], one of the trendsetter media in Mexico City.
 The
creative concept of the program is to find two topics allegedly
 disconnected
, but united by four or five Wikipedia articles, with a sound design that
 will
 reinforce the concept.

It has been several months of planning the concept, which will serve to
further spread our mission in Mexico, thanks our GLAM partnering with the
Universidad Iberoamericana and their radio station, Ibero 90.9 FM.

This program will be conducted by Almendra Hernández, Carmen Alcázar and
 me. We
will upload the audios for those wishing to listen to them, so you can
 practice
 your Spanish :)

 Best regards.

2013-05-31 Thread Daniel Mietchen
Hi Iván,

that's an interesting concept - looking forward to listening to the recordings.

Do you envision that collaboration to broaden a bit over time? For
instance, there does not seem to be any mention of Creative Commons on
their site, or their trained voices might help in getting some more
Wikipedia articles spoken in Spanish, or they might have a sound
archive (or contacts to one), which could then be asked about
releasing materials under Wikimedia-compatible licenses.

Cheers,

Daniel

Iván, I love this. Good luck! Do you have a list of articles you
are planning to connect? I would be keen to see if the same property
of being almost connected holds across languages.

[Wikimedia-l] WMF Board approves FDC's 2012-2013 Round 2 funding recommendations

2013-05-31 Thread Patricio Lorente
Dear members of the Wikimedia community,

As you know, on April 28, the Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) made
its Round 2 funding recommendations to the WMF Board of Trustees. [1]
From the four proposals that were submitted in this round, the FDC
recommended that two of these movement entities receive a total of
$665,000 USD: they recommended $140,000 USD to Wikimedia Norge and
$525,000 USD to Wikimédia France.

I am pleased to share with you the news that the Board of Trustees has
made the decision to approve the FDC's 2012-2013 Round 2 funding
recommendations. [2] These funding recommendations will now be
implemented by the Foundation.

Many members of our community provided significant and thoughtful
input during Round 2. We would like to thank the Round 2 applicants,
the Funds Dissemination Committee members and staff, the ombudsperson,
and the members of the community who participated in the review
period.

We have learned much from this inaugural year of the FDC process, and
we look forward to hearing from you about your experience. The WMF
learning and evaluation team will be reaching out to those that
participated in the process to collect feedback through surveys, and
the ombudsperson will be collecting feedback as well. Learning
collected through these processes will be shared in a report.

Again, we thank you all for your dedication and commitment to this
funding process.

Best,

Patricio Lorente, Board Representative to the FDC

Will the current Wikivoyage logo be an option in this upcoming logo
selection contest? If the Wikivoyage community is strongly in favor of
retaining the logo it already approved, what are options?

I don't believe there's any precedent for the Wikimedia Foundation vetoing
a community-approved logo in this manner. (Is there?) This seems like
unchartered territory for Wikimedia, so it's important to be cautious and
careful, I think.

We believe that the community is the best body to decide what logo should
represent their hard work and hope that interested community members will
take this opportunity to once again showcase their creativity and talent
by submitting designs.

As I posted on the relevant Meta-Wiki talk page just now, the Wikimedia
community cannot feel rushed or pressured to accept this new logo
selection procedure. Typically a discussion of this nature would last at
least thirty days, from my experience.

This leaves two options, as I see it: pushing back the timeline for the
selection of a Wikivoyage logo by a few weeks or not using this procedure
for the selection of the next Wikivoyage logo.

On behalf of a Wikivoyager, I've already asked the legal team if
derivatives of the current logo would be usable, and I'm afraid the answer
is no. It must be a new logo.

I think that the reason why there's no precedent is because this is the
first time that we have run into a trademark infringement claim against a
logo.

The question of process is one for Meta, where discussion is already
underway. No reason to fracture it. :) I appreciate your input there.
