[Wikimedia-l] August 1: Strategy update - Preparing for Wikimania, the strategic direction, and New voices insights (#22)

2017-08-01 Thread Katherine Maher
Hi all —

Wikimania is coming, but before we get to Montreal, we are publishing many
more insights, reports, guides, and research from our work during cycle 3.
There's lots of good stuff and interesting insights (did you know Spain is
consistently one of the countries with the highest awareness about our
projects and community?), and I encourage you to take a look. Here are a
few new updates:

*New voices synthesis report.*[1] Are you looking to better understand New
Voices projects? Start with this overview report — it summarizes our work
across many teams: insights from research, a summary of 58 expert
interviews, expert convenings hosted by the Foundation and affiliates,
design research findings, briefings on major trends that will impact the
community like misinformation and emerging platforms, further reading, and
(of course!) references.

*July Wikimedia Foundation metrics meeting.*[2] During our July 27 meeting,
we reviewed new research on brand insights about why people do (and do not)
read Wikipedia, research that focuses on high-awareness countries as part
of New Voices initiatives.

*Strategic direction committee update.*[3] We are working to consider what
we have heard from the community and learned from research to identify what
we want to achieve as a movement by 2030. We will share our first draft of
the strategic direction with all of you in advance of Wikimania. We’re
looking forward to your thoughts on the talk page!

*Wikimania movement strategy and events.*[4] Speaking of Wikimania, the
Foundation is preparing 6 sessions related to the strategy process in the
official program. We will also offer you a physical location for engaging
with the strategic direction: the Movement Strategy Space, open from
Thursday through Sunday. The Space will host different working sessions,
discussions, and the chance to re-energize for the coming weeks and months
(we have some special things in store!). The conference organizers are also
preparing a remote attendee plan with live video and content for the
conference overall, so you will be able to participate if you’re not able
to come to Montreal. Please note that online registration ended July 31;
after that you can register on-site starting August 8.[5]

ভালো থাকবেন। (Bengali translation: “Stay well”)

[Wikimedia-l] Sharing sad news about Bassel

2017-08-01 Thread Katherine Maher
Dear all,

I am very deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of our fellow
community member Bassel Khartabil, also known to some as Bassel Safadi.

Bassel was detained on March 15, 2012 amid arrests on the one-year
anniversary of the Syrian uprising. He had been missing since October 2015,
when he was removed from the Syrian prison where he was being held. His
wife, Noura, confirmed earlier today in a statement on Facebook that he was
executed by the Syrian government shortly after his disappearance.

Bassel was a leader, advocate, and member of so many open culture
communities it is difficult to do them all justice. In addition to his
contributions to Wikimedia, he was project lead and public affiliate for
Creative Commons Syria, a member of the Global Voices community, a free
software advocate and contributor to Mozilla, and much more. The European
Parliament statement on his detention credited him with “opening up the
Internet in Syria and vastly extending online access and knowledge to the
Syrian people."[1] He was known for his boundless enthusiasm and passion,
always encouraging others to share, create, and connect with a better world
around them.

Many of you cared deeply about Bassel, working to raise awareness of his
detention and disappearance. Please know that his friends and family knew
of and appreciated these efforts, both as a voice on his behalf and a
reminder of the values of the communities to which he devoted his time and
attention. I personally am grappling with profound anger and sorrow that
someone so brilliant, humane, and generous should be taken in this way. For
those who did not know Bassel, you can learn more about his life and work
at his article [2], and at https://freebassel.org.

The Wikimedia Foundation will publish a statement soon, and ask for your
support in helping us translate that message to share more broadly. We will
also work to find a way to celebrate Bassel’s life and honor his
contributions at Wikimania next week.

Yours, sadly,

Katherine

[Wikimedia-l] Trace of Soul (WLM+WLE) in Republic of Srpska

2017-08-01 Thread WМ RepublikaSrpska
Hello everyone!

I am pleased, in front of the Wikimedia Community of the Republic of
Srpska, to inform you that our community received its first annual APG
grant this year and we are very excited about it! :) We have already
started with the initial activities - the Trace of Soul 2017 project. It is
a photo competition revolving around natural and stationary cultural
heritage of the Republic of Srpska. The competition is organized for the
third time in the Republic of Srpska and we hope that it will be
successfully implemented as in the previous years. In addition to the
photo-competitions, we will have a number of accompanying activities -
photo-tours and editing workshops in various cities of the Republic of
Srpska. We hope that this year we will be able to improve the project both
in terms of quality and quantity.

For more information, see Trace of Soul
, and
the project
website .

Best,

Bojana

[Wikimedia-l] Fwd: [Wikitech-l] Fwd: US court declares GPL is a contract

2017-08-01 Thread Pine W
Forwarding for those interested in intellectual property law. I'm nowhere near
being an expert on this subject, but this case seems interesting for those of
us who work with materials which are licensed under the GPL.

http://www.technollama.co.uk/us-court-declares-gpl-is-a-contract :

[...]

In a strong declaration that online open source licences are contracts,
the court declares:

“Defendant contends that Plaintiff’s reliance on the unsigned GNU
GPL fails to plausibly demonstrate mutual assent, that is, the
existence of a contract. Not so. The GNU GPL, which is attached to
the complaint, provides that the Ghostscript user agrees to its
terms if the user does not obtain a commercial license. Plaintiff
alleges that Defendant used Ghostscript, did not obtain a commercial
license, and represented publicly that its use of Ghostscript was
licensed under the GNL GPU. These allegations sufficiently plead the
    existence of a contract.”

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Copyfraud by the British Museum

2017-08-01 Thread Jean-Philippe Béland
Exact replica should not be copyrighted in my opinion since they are not a
"creation of the mind". That being said, the changes made by the one doing
the replica can be copyrighted.

In this case of the museum, I think the person(s) doing the restoration did
a "creation of the mind" since they rebuild it without having an exact
model to copy.

[Wikimedia-l] Help requested for finding certain subjects in your local Wikipedia

2017-08-01 Thread Romaine Wiki
Hi all,

In the Dutch part of Belgium there exists a performing arts database, and
they are donating parts of it to Wikidata. Over the past century they have
collected the theatre venues and festivals where a Flemish theatre group
had its première. For many locations I already found an article in
Wikipedia or an item in Wikidata, for some not yet. For those of which no
article nor item could be found, I need your help!

Please help me identify which venues and festivals from your country listed
on this page have in your Wikipedia already an article?

You can edit the page!

The countries of what I have at least one or more locations are:

Actually, on Commons I had photographs deleted on the ground that the
depicted building is a replica of an old building which went out of
copyright, but the replica is copyrighted (despite my objection). When I
myself nominated a photograph on the same grounds, it was kept. I do not
particularly care which one is correct, but it would be great to have
consistent practice.
