[Wikimedia-l] Re: Welcoming María Sefidari as a Foundation consultant. :)

2021-10-01 Thread Chuck Roslof
Hi all,

This is a brief note to follow up on our commitment to update the conflict
of interest policy.[1] I apologize that we did not meet our initial
deadline of 30 September, but the update is in progress. We are currently
finalizing the draft updated policy and figuring out the best timing for
publication. We want to make sure we have adequate staff support to respond
to feedback, and we want to minimize overlap with and disruption of other
planned discussions. Currently, it looks like we should be able to publish
the draft updated policy by the first week of November. I will let you know
when we have a set date.

Best,
Chuck

[Wikimedia-l] Invitation to Wikimedia Research Office hours October 5, 2021

2021-10-01 Thread Emily Lescak
Hi all,
Join the Research Team at the Wikimedia Foundation [1] for their monthly
Office hours next Tuesday, 2021-10-05, at 16:00-17:00 UTC (9am PT/6pm
CEST). To participate, join the video-call via this link [2]. There is no
set agenda - feel free to add your item to the list of topics in the
etherpad [3] (You can do this after you join the meeting, too.), otherwise
you are welcome to also just hang out. More detailed information (e.g.
about how to attend) can be found here [4]. Through these office hours, we
aim to make ourselves more available to answer some of the research related
questions that you as Wikimedia volunteer editors, organizers, affiliates,
staff, and researchers face in your projects and initiatives. Some example
cases we hope to be able to support you in: - You have a specific research
related question that you suspect you should be able to answer with the
publicly available data and you don’t know how to find an answer for it, or
you just need some more help with it. For example, how can I compute the
ratio of anonymous to registered editors in my wiki? - You run into
repetitive or very manual work as part of your Wikimedia contributions and
you wish to find out if there are ways to use machines to improve your
workflows. These types of conversations can sometimes be harder to find an
answer for during an office hour, however, discussing them can help us
understand your challenges better and we may find ways to work with each
other to support you in addressing it in the future. - You want to learn
what the Research team at the Wikimedia Foundation does and how we can
potentially support you. Specifically for affiliates: if you are interested
in building relationships with the academic institutions in your country,
we would love to talk with you and learn more. We have a series of programs
that aim to expand the network of Wikimedia researchers globally and we
would love to collaborate with those of you interested more closely in this
space. - You want to talk with us about one of our existing programs [5].
Hope to see many of you, Emily on behalf of the WMF Research Team [1]

[Wikimedia-l] Conversation with Maggie Dennis on Community Resilience & Sustainability

2021-10-01 Thread Cornelius Kibelka
Hi friends,

The Community Resilience & Sustainability

team at the Wikimedia Foundation is hosting a new call led by its Vice
President Maggie Dennis
 (it
was called 'Office Hour' before, but we're trying to move away from that
word, because it's so hard to translate).

Topics within scope for this call include Movement Strategy coordination,
Board Governance, Trust and Safety (and the Universal Code of Conduct),
Community Development, and Human Rights. We anticipate there may be
interest in the recent September statement
.
Come with your questions or feedback, and let’s talk! You can also send us
your questions in advance.

The meeting will take place on *October 14 at 13:00 UTC *(check your local
time ).

You can check all the details on Meta
.

Cheers
Cornelius

[Wikimedia-l] Women, Wikiquote, SheSaid Launch, and Nigeria Independence Day...

2021-10-01 Thread Florence Devouard

Good idea !

I have created two (very meager to be honest) entries on Wikiquote (in
French and in English) about a Nigerian lady, Anie Akpe.
(She has no Wikipedia article, just saying, maybe worth checking if she
is notable enough ;) )

This is the perfect opportunity to promote the SheSaid drive starting
today (for two months)

For those who do not know the #SheSaid drive (second edition), this is
about giving a bit of love to Wikiquote, and to balance the gender gap
at the same time.

So if you want to do something super cool for wikiquote, for women and
for Nigeria today... all in one package...

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Conference and Events Funds Update

2021-10-01 Thread Tito Dutta
Greetings,
A community is definitely in the best position to do a risk-assessment, so
no comment on that. Good wishes for the proposal.

On another note, in the last couple of years we have widely explored remote
events/online events like never before. New knowledge have been gained, and
over-all it has been fantastic.

I believe we should continue to work on and strengthen this online program
model as much as possible, even after the pandemic.

Currently, there is another thing to note in the Conference Grant model.
Conference grant is a long process and a conference is generally conducted
5–6 months after the proposal. In an uncertain time (possible next wave
etc) it is very difficult to plan things so early. I have read that this is
noted in the proposal.
Regards.

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Wikimedia Endowment reaches initial $100 million goal and welcomes new board members

2021-10-01 Thread Jan-Bart de Vreede
So having totally missed this news last week I have to (belatedly) agree with
Christophe and SJ.

Many congratulations to Lisa and the team for proposing the endowment and
making it a succes. It is amazing to see how many donors have been willing to
contribute to reaching this milestone so quickly.

Secondly great to see Doron, Phoebe and Patricio on the board! Their collective
knowledge of the movement and our challenges will be of great value!

Thank you!
