 Greetings,

The certified results of the 2015 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees
election are now available on Meta-Wiki:
 https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections_2015/Results

Congratulations to Dariusz Jemielniak (User:pundit), James Heilman
(User:Doc James), and Denny Vrandečić (User:Denny), for receiving the most
community support. They will join the Wikimedia Foundation as Trustees,
after they are appointed by the Board at their July meeting at Wikimania.

These results have been certified by the committee, the Wikimedia
Foundation's legal department, and the Board of Trustees.

There were 5512 votes cast, with 5167 of those being valid. The 345-vote
difference comes from recast ballots, where eligible voters recast ballots
to change their votes, and struck votes, of which there were 4.

Additional information is available on the Wikimedia Blog:
 http://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/06/05/board-election-results

More statistics on the elections, a post mortem from the committee, and a
blog post on the process behind the elections will be published in the
coming days. In the meantime, we would appreciate your input—what went well
for you in this election? What could we do better next time? These
reports are crucial to helping future elections be even more successful,
and we hope that you will offer your feedback and ideas:

 https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections_2015/Post_mortem

The committee thanks everyone that participated in this year’s election for
helping make it one of the most diverse and representative in the
 movement’s history.

 Sincerely,
 – 2015 Wikimedia Foundation Elections Committee

[Wikimedia-l] Learning from other chapters

2015-05-27 Thread David Parreño Mont - Comunicació
Hi,

In Amical Wikimedia we have read with attention the reports of APG, the
grants concedeed by the Wikimedia Foundation to the diferents chapters in
order to run their activities. These comments by the WMF have
recommendations for the other associations in order to learn from their
errors and their success from the others and improving together. In this
post we want to highlight those things that to us looked more positive from
the advices and reflexions that we have analized.

Hi,

Last month, Andrea from Italy asked about events with journalists. You can
find at our monthly report
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Amical_Wikimedia/March_2015 a highlight
about the Wikipedia Day at Catalunya Radio.

Looking forward to hear your experience at International Journalism
Festival :)

Best,

On 13th of March, from 8am and throughout the day, Amical Wikimedia
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Amical_Wikimedia and Ramon Barnils Group
organized an Edit-a-thon at Catalunya Ràdio headquarters
https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viquip%C3%A8dia:Viquimarat%C3%B3_Ramon_Barnils,
the Catalan public radio station. The event lasted 12 hours with live
connections every half an hour. The aim of the initiative was to improve
the article of the eminent journalist Ramon Barnils
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramon_Barnils, a founder of Catalunya
Ràdio, updating and renewing his entry and other related items. Catalan
Wikipedia celebrated its 14th anniversary on the 16th of March, just when
it is about to reach 500,000 articles, and the 14th of March was the 14th
anniversary of the death of Ramon Barnils. 25 Wikimedians attended (8 new)
the edit-a-thon in different turns. All the radio programs of that day were
focused on Wikipedia: Wikipedians were interviewed on the factual
programmes, the analysis program discussed on the impact of Wikipedia, the
comedy show made jokes about Wikipedia, and the game show asked trivia
questions about Wikipedia. The Ramon Barnils Group and relatives released
photos of the journalist into Wikimedia Commons. The Catalan public TV and
many digital media covered it, too. In addition, Wikipedians improved the
Wikidata item and the Wikiquote page of Ramon Barnils, and made a lots of
pics and recorded the voice of the journalists of Catalunya Ràdio for
Wikimedia Commons. You can find the images here
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Viquimarat%C3%B3_Barnils and
here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Catalunya_R%C3%A0dio.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Events and editathons with journalists

2015-03-01 Thread David Parreño Mont
Hi,

In Barcelona this March we'll host an editathon with journalists too. It
will be in the headquarters of Catalunya Radio with the purpose to improve
the article of the prominent journalist Ramon Barnils
https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramon_Barnils, one of the founders of
Catalunya Radio, the public radio service in Catalonia. It will be the day
of the death of this journalist, and also the day of birth of Catalan
Wikipedia :)

All along the day the radio programs will connect in live with us to cover
how the editathon is going, to explain the history of Wikipedia, and it
will push our challenge to achieve 500k articles this year.

We'll have soon the article translated into English, so I invite you to
help us translating the article in your own language ;)

Apart from that, Amical also do workshops to digital journalism students at
Ramon Llull University.

Wikimedia Hungary did a workshop as well with sport journalists.

What we learnt is to keep it simple (teaching the basics is enough) and
brake it into multiple rounds (we broke it into two rounds - not enough)
and make it interactive (edit together from the first to the last sec).

 Hope I helped a bit :)

  Hello, Andrea:

This sounds like an interesting project!

Here are some examples that popped into my head right away:
*CIS (is planning a workshop for journalists as part of Kannada language
  outreach)
*Wikimedia CH (did some work building a network of journalism schools)
*Wikimedia Argentina (did at least one workshop for journalists back in
  2012 in Rosario City)
*Wikimedia Deutschland (did at least one workshop back in 2013 with
  journalists from ZDF Berlin)
*The Malayalam community did a workshop for journalists as part of the
events leading up to their community's 2013 conference

Not sure if everyone I've listed is working on this currently, but these
groups may have some experience to share. And there must be others I
haven't listed here! Seems like a good opportunity to share some learning
patterns on this topic, since I haven't found much there about working
 with
  journalists! :)

Cheers and best of luck with your project! We look forward to the
 results.

GLAM-WIKI10 hours edit-a-thon for 100 design students

During April we did the central activity of the project where we are mixing
GLAM and EDU with the Design Museum of Barcelona. Around 400 students in 25
classrooms of 13 design schools are improving Wikipedia Articles. On April
25 we did a 10 hours long design editathon (organized in groups from 10 to
20 people) at the Documentation Center of the Museum. Click here[2] to see
more pics. It was the opening day of the documentation center so students
could behave as beta testers. One of the good points was doing it
graduatelly with small groups so we could help them personally and also
that they could take the books back home (15 days free-rent), so Wikipedia
articles are being improved since then. We also did a backstage pass to the
warehouse of the documentation center and a general guided tour to the
building.
