developing a Wikimedia Agenda for an entire continent, and start drawing a
picture of what events could look like that are aligned with our strategy.

*Our guests are…*

   -

*Felix Nartey, *the Wikimedian of the Year in 2017, currently working as
a Senior Program Officer at the Wikimedia Foundation.

[Wikimedia-l] WIKIMOVE Podcast: Overcoming Harassment and the Transgender Gap

2023-10-04 Thread Eva Martin
Hello everyone,

The WIKIMOVE Podcast is back with a season 2. In this new episode, we talk
with two long term volunteers about overcoming harassment and the
transgender gap on the Wikimedia projects. You can find this podcast on our
website
<https://www.wikimedia.de/wikimove-site/podcast/episode-13-overcoming-harassment-and-the-transgender-gap/>
and share ideas for future topics and guests on our meta page.
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WIKIMOVE>

*What's in this episode?*

In this podcast episode we interview two long-time non-binary Wikipedia
editors, Pax and Tamsin. They discuss their efforts to improve the
representation of marginalized groups and reduce harassment on Wikipedia,
reinforcing the importance of the movement strategy's focus on safety and
inclusion. The guests talked about their fight against vandalism and
provided a critical perspective on the neutral point of view policy. The
episode sheds light on the challenges and the progress that we face as a
Movement as we try to create a Wikipedia that is safer and that better
represents trans and non-binary people and content.

*Our guests are...*

   -

*Pax Ahimsa Gethen*, editor on the English Wikipedia since 2008 and
Media Contributor of the Year 2023. Pax is a queer Black trans blogger and
photographer, and long-time resident of San Francisco.

   -

*Tamzin Hadasa Kelly,* Wikimedian since 2012. Tamzin has written
Wikipedia articles on topics ranging from LGBTQ subjects, to unusual legal
cases, to Mike Tyson’s tattoos, and is one of the few openly non-binary
   admins on the English Wikipedia.

[Wikimedia-l] WIKIMOVE Podcast on Decentralization in the Wikimedia Movement

2023-05-10 Thread Eva Martin
Hello everyone,

Our latest WIKIMOVE Podcast on Decentralization has just dropped! You can
find this podcast on our website
<https://www.wikimedia.de/wikimove-site/podcast/episode-11-decentralization>
and share ideas for future topics and guests on our meta page.
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WIKIMOVE/Suggestions>

—-

What's in this episode?

In this episode we go back to the origins of movement strategy. We shed a
light on some of the concepts that are foundational to the strategy and to
how Wikimedia projects are governed since the beginning: decentralization
and subsidiarity. Our guests explain where these concepts came from, and
why they are central to the future governance model. We explore what
decentralization could mean in practice for areas such as fundraising,
software development and advocacy.

Our guests are...

   -

Claudia Garad, Executive Director of Wikimedia Österreich since 2012,
member of the Roles & Responsibilities Working Group during phase 2 of the
Movement Strategy process, President of Wikimedia Europe since 2022

   -

Guillaume Paumier, Wikimedian since 2005, working for the Foundation
since 2009, architect of the first phase of movement strategy which led to
   the strategic direction.

[Wikimedia-l] WIKIMOVE Podcast on the Governance of Wikipedia

2023-04-04 Thread Eva Martin
Hi everyone,

We are releasing today a new WIKIMOVE podcast on the *Governance of
Wikipedia, *with two experienced volunteers from our Movement: Florence
Devouard and Martin Rulsch.

You can find this podcast on our website
<https://www.wikimedia.de/wikimove-site/podcast/episode-10-governing-wikipedia/>
and share ideas for future topics and guests on our meta page.
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WIKIMOVE/Suggestions>

—-

What's in this episode?

We talk with two veteran functionaries about the system of governance for
Wikipedia and what the challenges are. We learn about IP blocks and
notability criteria. We ask provocative questions like… does Movement
Strategy make everything worse? Does the system need to change or do the
people need to better learn to obey the rules? What can be done to
strengthen our community governance and the people holding it up?

*Note: this will not be the last conversation we will host on these issues,
as other voices should be surfaced too.*

*Our guests are...*

   - *Florence Devouard*, co-executive Director of Wiki in Africa, former
Steward and WMF Chair, active Wikipedian since 2002

   - *Martin Rulsch*, Wikimedia Steward (volunteer) and project manager at
Wikimedia Deutschland (employee), active Wikimedian since 2004

Hello everyone,

Our latest WIKIMOVE Podcast on Abstract Wikipedia has just dropped!

What's in this episode?

We talk with Denny Vrandečić and Lydia Pintscher about the software
products that are changing the way the Movement leverages data to move
towards the strategic direction of knowledge equity and knowledge as a
service. Lydia gives an update on what is happening with Wikidata, and
Denny shares about a newer project - Abstract Wikipedia, which aims to let
more people share more knowledge in more languages. Abstract Wikipedia
allows people to create and maintain Wikipedia articles in a
language-independent way. A particular language Wikipedia can then
translate the article into its language. We also touch on Wikifunctions,
and large-language models and how it all relates.

Our guests are...

Lydia Pintscher, Portfolio lead for Wikidata at Wikimedia Deutschland

Denny Vrandečić, Founder of Wikidata and currently leading the development
of Wikifunctions and Abstract Wikipedia at the Wikimedia Foundation

[Wikimedia-l] New WIKIMOVE Podcast #6: Regional and thematic hubs

2022-11-22 Thread Eva Martin
Dear all,

Our latest WIKIMOVE Episode on regional and thematic Hubs has just dropped!
Check it out on our website and feel free to react to it on our meta page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WIKIMOVE> to continue the conversation:

https://www.wikimedia.de/wikimove-site/podcast/episode-6-hubs/

What's in this episode?

Regional and thematic hubs continue to be the hot topic among many
Wikimedians pursuant to the strategy recommendations. Many affiliates and
volunteers have done hub-like work for a long time, and hubs now seem to
provide a vehicle to formalize and financially sustain that work. The idea
of having structures that help people share resources, do fundraising
together, and make decisions at the regional level reverberates with many.
Today we have Johnny Allegre and Natalia Szafran-Kozakowska to give us
updates on hub activities in Asia and Eastern Europe.

Our guests are

   -

Johnny Alegre, President of Philippine WIkimedia Community UG and member
   of the ESEAP Hub
   -

Natalia Szafran-Kozakowska, Community Support Team Manager at Wikimedia
Poland and member of the CEE Hub Interim Steering Committee

Our guests are…

Kiril Simeonovski
Kiril is president of Shared Knowledge and a leading Wikimedian from the
region of Central and Eastern Europe and has been actively contributing to
the Wikimedia projects since 2008.

Daniel Bögre Udell

[Wikimedia-l] WIKIMOVE Ep#3: UNLOCKing innovation - now available on Spotify, Soundcloud, Stitcher & more

2022-06-24 Thread Eva Martin
Dear all,

We are excited to be dropping the 3rd episode of WIKIMOVE
<https://www.wikimedia.de/wikimove-site/>, our podcast on everything
Wikimedia Movement Strategy. In this episode we talk about innovation and
explore the opportunities created by the UNLOCK accelerator within our
movement and beyond.

Good news!

Our podcast is now available with RSS Feed on Acast
<https://shows.acast.com/wikimove/episodes>, Spotify,
<https://open.spotify.com/show/7olhgddgj7KpWGOzSkPOQJ?si=8907893eb0cd402f=1>
Soundcloud,

Stitcher <https://www.stitcher.com/show/wikimove> and Castbox
<https://castbox.fm/channel/WIKIMOVE-id4979039?country=de>. More podcast
platforms will follow.

The video version of our show is also available on Youtube
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTlskaMYR-M> with english subtitles.

What’s in this episode?

We are looking back at years of complaints about how Wikimedia technology
is outdated and exclusive. Non-encyclopedic forms of knowledge are still
impossible or hard to insert into our existing formats. The last big
innovation from our movement is Wikidata, which is now almost ten years
old. Movement Strategy calls on us to innovate our technical and social
systems so that new and marginalized communities can join and share their
knowledge. We talk about the UNLOCK accelerator program, how it is being
implemented in collaboration with WMS and WMDE this year, and explore how
the movement can become more of an innovation ecosystem.

Our guests are…

Kannika Thaimai, Program lead of the UNLOCK accelerator at Wikimedia
Deutschland

Ivana Madžarević, Program and Community Support Manager at Wikimedia Serbia

Please visit our meta page <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WIKIMOVE> to
react to the episode and subscribe to our newsletter to get notified of
each new release.

We wish you all a summer break and will be back in August with our next
episode!

Cheers,
