[Wikimedia-l] Apply to join the Africa Growth Pilot!

2023-08-04 Thread Felix Nartey
*Tl;dr:* Are you from Africa and looking for other opportunities to
contribute your knowledge and skills to Wikimedia or learn how to make
valuable contributions to Wikipedia? Join the Africa Growth Project Pilot
on WikiLearn to grasp the basics of contributing to Wikipedia and explore
the various contribution options within the movement! Applications are
accepted from August 4 - 16, 2023
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd_RMweV7xPQmkuFgRc2bRq8Z1i35bC8wC6q6QMdMtIkdEl3Q/viewform>
.

Dear Wikimedians,

About a month ago, the Wikimedia Foundation announced the idea of an Africa
Growth Project and initiated a curriculum consultation
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Africa_Growth_Pilot/Live_Tutorials_on_Core_Policies>
which concluded on 21 July 2023. The pilot project, as highlighted in the
original email, seeks to enhance community efforts by creating a more
effective online learning experience to improve the retention of new
volunteers.

Why the Africa Growth Project?

Investing in community capacity has been emphasized in various discussions
within the Movement. These needs have been explicitly outlined in the
Movement Strategy and, more importantly, the recent request for help with
editor growth and retention from the communities in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Africa Growth Project is a pilot that aims to experiment with a course
to provide a strong foundation in Wikipedia policies and collaboration
norms, closely guided by our hypothesis of providing high-quality
structured training to new and existing Wikimedians covering the basics of
contribution to Wikimedia (including introducing the many ways to
contribute beyond article writing) can double the retention rates of active
editors in the region.

What can I expect?

The program will consist of a 4-week online learning experience in
September. It will prepare participants to understand the fundamentals of
contributing to Wikimedia and the range of contribution options available
within the movement. For the initial iteration of this project, the course
will only be offered in English. We intend to expand to other languages in
the future if the piloted approach proves successful.

Participants will leave the course with:

   -

Basic familiarity with the Wikimedia landscape
   -

Awareness of the many different contribution options available to
volunteers, over and beyond writing encyclopedia articles
   -

The ability to write in an encyclopedic tone and grasp the concept of a
   neutral point of view
   -

Understanding of reliable sources, referencing them, and the concept of
   "verifiability, not truth".

Who is eligible?

We invite all Africans, both experienced and new, who have an interest in
developing or refreshing a clear understanding of the basics of
contributing to Wikimedia and exploring the opportunities that exist for
them in the Wikimedia volunteer journey.

Only* 150 slots are available*, selection will be based on the level of
interest shown in the response, and users with accounts that are 6 months
old or older will have an advantage.

Applications are open from 4 - 16 August 2023
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd_RMweV7xPQmkuFgRc2bRq8Z1i35bC8wC6q6QMdMtIkdEl3Q/viewform>,

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Apply to join the Beta version of the Organizer Lab!

2022-10-12 Thread Felix Nartey
Dear Wikimedians,

Applications for the first-ever cohort of the organizer lab closes on 19th
October 2022 (in about a week!)

Our goal for the first cohort is to form a diverse cohort where people
representing different regions, countries, languages, and communities can
learn from and share their experiences with each other. We've received an
overwhelming response to our call for applications, but there are some
regions that are underrepresented. We want to encourage people from South
Asia, North Africa, and Latin America to apply
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Campaigns/Organizer_Lab>.

Are you still confused about how to apply?

Read the instructions and apply via our page on Meta
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Campaigns/Organizer_Lab> or read more
about the project on Diff
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/09/22/join-the-organizer-lab-beta/>.

Did you miss our information session, don’t worry we got you:-) You can
watch the recorded version of the information session on youtube
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hv5bmaBgaLQ> and please don’t hesitate to
reach out to the team via campai...@wikimedia.org if you have any questions.

Please help us share this opportunity within your circles!

Best,

[Wikimedia-l] The May Round Of 1Lib1Ref Starts Tomorrow 15 May 2022

2022-05-14 Thread Felix Nartey
Hello fellow Wikimedians, librarians, bibliophiles, and information
enthusiasts,

The May round of the 2022 1Lib1Ref <https://1lib1ref.org/> starts just
tomorrow 15 May 2022 and will run until 5th June 2022. Are you going to be
joining us to improve the reliability of Wikipedia's content for the
billions of readers who rely on Wikipedia as a source of information?

In the past year or so we have been piloting different modes of
participation in the campaign. In May 2021 we encouraged adding sources on
Wikidata, in January 2022 we improved on that, added opportunities to
create Wikidata items related to works on Wikisource, and added 9 new
languages from the CEE on citation hunt
<https://citationhunt.toolforge.org/en?id=3c84e6ae>. We are
encouraging the addition
of references to decrease gender bias on Wikipedia
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Participate#Adding_references_to_decrease_gender_bias>
and 12 new languages from Africa, and Asia in the upcoming May round.

If you are already familiar with the campaign or editing on Wikipedia and
would like to experiment a bit, we invite you to try our new contribution
methods for advanced contributors
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Participate#Creating_new_articles_on_Wikipedia>
in the May 2022 round.

If you are an organizer, remember to add your local event(s) to the campaign
dashboard
<https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/campaigns/1lib1ref_may_2022/overview>,
so we can learn and track activities happening across the world. Read more
about the campaign at the blog post on Diff
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/05/11/the-may-round-for-1lib1ref-is-back-with-a-more-diverse-campaign-and-even-more-languages/>

Join us to improve the reliability of Wikipedia articles one source at a
time!

[Wikimedia-l] Africa Knowledge Initiative (AKI) Community Engagements

2022-04-29 Thread Felix Nartey
More than 1 billion people live on the continent of Africa but just about
27 thousand Africans contribute to the African story on Wikipedia.

Are you ready to help put back the African narrative in the hands of its
people?

The partnership & community programs team at the WMF is forming a
partnership with the African Union to encourage content creation from the
continent. The project seeks to empower Wikimedia communities on the
continent by creating access to the network and the resources of the AU.

You can read more about the project in our recently published diff post

[Wikimedia-l] Join us for 1Lib1Ref this May!!

2021-04-30 Thread Felix Nartey
Hello Librarians and library lovers,

(Sorry for cross posting)

>From May 15th to June 5th 2021, we will be joining together once again to
continue providing reliable and factual information to the world through
Wikipedia and the #1lib1ref campaign. To participate is easy, simply add a
citation to Wikipedia!![1]

*May Experiments *

This May we are focused on:

   -

growing the campaign in East and South East Asia with local affiliates
-- if you want to help contact Venus Lui via (vlui-...@wikimedia.org) or
   me.
   -

working closely with AfLIA to sustain our relationship with the
Librarians network in Africa. Last year the participation from African
Librarians was overwhelming, recording about 84% of the total numbers of
edits attained (33,257). This surged our campaign to a staggering increase
of 394%YoY for the May campaign.[2]
   -

Supporting our long standing partner for the campaign, IFLA as they
   explore citations on Wikidata [3][4]

How can you engage?

We invite you to engage in three ways:

   -

Make an edit - Participate globally and virtually by adding citations to
   Wikipedia.[5]
   -

Organise - Lead a community activity or event in your library, country
   or region.[6]
   -

Amplify - Share and just keep sharing the campaign within your networks
and help us reach out to library and research communities around the
   world.[7]

Join local events or editathons

If you are organising an activity virtually or providing a space to teach
or train people with an interest in the campaign, please add your event(s)
here.[8] In light of the pandemic, we strongly encourage virtual activities
and advise everyone to follow the WHO health guidelines.[9] If restrictions
have been lifted in your country and are considering organising in-person
events, kindly follow the Wikimedia COVID risk assessment for events.[10]

Ensure all your contributions are recorded by using the #1Lib1Ref hashtag
in your edit summary! Add your activity to the campaign dashboard to help
us track the activities happening across the globe.[11] This is very
important for us to monitor the reach and success of the initiative.

Join the next campaigns office hour on Thursday 13th May at 3:00pm UTC,
where we will share about strategies in Asia and Africa, under the
theme “exploring
regional or thematic approaches to campaigns in tackling topics of interest
”.[12]

Please tell your library, researcher and knowledge-loving friends about
#1Lib1Ref in May. We need everyone's help to make Wikipedia more reliable!

You can join the 1Lib1Ref community via the Libraries (

[Wikimedia-l] Evaluating ideal use of prizes or rewards for campaigns

2021-03-12 Thread Felix Nartey
Dear Community,

(apologies for cross-posting!)

Prizes or awards are key to volunteer organisations such as Wikimedia. It's
one way of providing motivation or encouraging continuous participation.
Even so, it's often very hard to decide on what could be an ideal prize for
a campaign. We have been hearing lots of questions from organizers about
appropriate criteria, types and amounts as prizes for a campaign. The
Wikimedia Foundation Campaigns Team invites you to our next virtual office
hour on 25th March at 3:00pm UTC via zoom[1] to discuss this topic with
organizers experienced at using prizes as part of competitions.[2]

The Campaigns Office hour is an opportunity to learn about how others have
organized content campaigns, new or emerging tools and tactics, and ask
questions about how campaigns have been implemented by other organizers.

The goal of this office hour will be to evaluate organizer concerns and
challenges, with a particular focus on helping photography campaigns and
content writing campaigns in creating consistent prize philosophies within
the Wikimedia Movement. Our recent office hour explained the 2021
WikiForHumanRights Campaign dubbed “Right to a Healthy Environment” (watch
video).[3] We talked about decentralized activities around the theme and
how to access mentoring and rapid grants.

[Wikimedia-l] Campaigns Office Hour Final Pilot Update -- Office Hour December 2nd!

2020-11-20 Thread Felix Nartey
Hello Everyone,

In September we asked for your participation in a pilot office hour series
which would take place over the last 3 months. December marks the end of
our pilot: we are organizing Campaign office hours to experiment with a new
communication channel about campaign practices in the movement.

The next pilot office hour will be on 2nd December at 3:00pm UTC via the
zoom link.[1] The session will focus on: Sharing lessons and strategies
from 1lib1ref, and our growth strategy in CEE for January and discussions
on the way forward for the campaign's office hour and other communication
opportunities around campaigns.

Don’t miss our last of the pilot series: we want to learn about your
questions, experiences, new ideas for content campaigns and the way to
further engage and provide support to your communities.

After the office hour, we will be evaluating our office hours, and will
reach out to learn more from your priorities about campaign communications.

Looking forward to learning, discussing and sharing with you!

Best,

Felix Nartey

[Wikimedia-l] 1Lib1Ref in January 2021!

2020-11-07 Thread Felix Nartey
Hello Librarians and library lovers,

>From January 15th to February 5th 2021 we will be joining together once
again to continue providing reliable and factual information to the world
through Wikipedia. You can participate in #1Lib1Ref by simply adding a
citation to Wikipedia's content to improve the quality and reliability for
the millions of users of the platform!

Since we are celebrating the “human” part of the Wikimedia movement for
Wikipedia 20: we are focused this year on how every single human (librarian
or archivist, reference professional, and scholar) can add one more
reference to Wikipedia. This year has highlighted how important Wikipedia’s
citations are for access to reliable and unbiased information. The
#1lib1ref campaign is a great way to strengthen Wikimedia community
relationships with the library, information and research professionals who
create that knowledge and share it with the world.

How can you engage?

We invite you to engage in three ways:

   -

Make an edit - Participate globally and virtually by adding citations to
   Wikipedia.[1]
   -

Organise - Lead a community activity or event in your library, country
   or region.[2]
   -

Amplify - Share and just keep sharing the campaign within your networks
and help us reach out to library and research communities around the
   world.[3]

In light of the pandemic, we strongly encourage virtual activities and
advise everyone to follow the WHO health guidelines.[4] If restrictions
have been lifted in your country and are considering organising in-person
events, kindly follow the Wikimedia COVID risk assessment for events.[5]

Ensure all your contributions are recorded by using the #1Lib1Ref hashtag

[Wikimedia-l] Campaigns Office Hour

2020-10-21 Thread Felix Nartey
Dear Community

It was really exciting to engage with you in our first Campaigns office
hour last month. Thank you to all who took the time to attend and for those
who couldn't, you can join our next office hour coming up later this month.

Our next office hour will be held virtually on 28 October, 2020 at 11:00 am
UTC via zoom.[1] This office hour will include a focus on what we have
Identified about Audience-based design for campaigns, the WikiGapFinder
Tool and Wikipedia Asian Month.

During our last office hour, you asked a number of questions that we hope
to continue talking with you about; a couple of questions about the remedy
for deciding on prizes, involving partners in campaigns and expanding the
reach of content drives. You can find the link to the video of the
presentations[2] and learn more about the questions on Meta. [3]

In the past month we presented at the CEE conference [4] and we are happy
to share links of our sessions with you:

   -

Opportunities for 1Lib1Ref in CEE [5]
   -

   Campaigns in CEE [6]

Hope to see you at our office hour!

Best,

Felix and Alex

[Wikimedia-l] Campaigns Office Hours

2020-09-15 Thread Felix Nartey
Dear Community,

As you may already know, the Foundation has been developing a small team
focused on supporting and understanding content campaigns and contests (see
our page on Meta [1]). Campaigns and contests are an important part of the
movement’s organizing activities: inviting newcomers, creating content and
bringing energy to communities worldwide.

We are piloting monthly office hours to discuss how content campaigns have
been organized in the movement. The first office hour will be on September
23 2020 at 3:00 PM UTC <https://wikimedia.zoom.us/j/99382142655>.[2]

The Campaigns Office hour is an opportunity to learn about how others have
organized content campaigns, new or emerging tools and tactics, and ask
questions about how campaigns have been implemented by other organizers.

The Office hour will be semi-structured, with community and WMF highlights
during the first half hour, and a Q period to learn more from the
speakers or from other organizers interested in content campaigns. This
month we will be highlighting:

   -

What is the WMF Campaigns team? From the WMF Campaigns team
   -

A Taxonomy of Knowledge Gaps [3] From WMF Research
   -

What was learned from the WPWP Campaign? From the WPWP organizing team

Don’t miss our first edition of the campaign office hour: we want to learn
about your questions, experiences and new ideas for content campaigns in
your Wikimedia communities.

Looking forward to learning, discussing and sharing with you!

Best,

Felix and Alex

[Wikimedia-l] 1Lib1Ref starts on Friday May 15

2020-05-12 Thread Felix Nartey
Librarians and library lovers,

We hope that you and your loved ones are taking care during this
challenging time. In just three days, starting from Friday May 15th, we
will be joining together around the world to make Wikipedia more reliable
through #1lib1ref!

We have just a few reminders:

Please follow the WHO’s health guidelines on the pandemic and avoid
physical convenings. [1] We encourage your participation in the campaign
virtually, by organising or participating in a virtual event.[2]

You are already organizing! We are particularly excited about the
interventions happening in this round, the local adoption of the campaign
in Africa dubbed “African Libraries Week” by the African Library and
Information Associations and Institutions (AfLIA), collaboration between
International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA)
and Wikimedia Argentina to organise a Webinar for LATAM and excited to see
public communication already addressing French, Spanish, English, Italian
and Portoguese language communities.[3]

You can learn more about these events, and add your own to the virtual
events list.[2]

Full resources and guides for participating in the May campaign are
available on the campaign website.[4] The campaign will be fully tracked
with the hashtag tool, so we encourage you to ensure your contribution is
recorded by adding the hashtag (#1lib1ref) in your edit summary. This is
very important for monitoring the reach and success of the campaign.

We need your help sharing the campaign! Visit the communicate and share
page, to access materials (graphics) and general communication about the
campaign.[5] Feel free to write a blog or make a post about the campaign
using the hashtag (*#1lib1ref / #1bib1ref)* and tag the Wikimedia and
Wikipedia Library Accounts.

Lastly, to learn more about the Wikimedia Foundation’s response to
COVID-19, please visit wikimediafoundation.org/covid19

[Wikimedia-l] #1Lib1Ref (virtual) starting May 2020!

2020-04-14 Thread Felix Nartey
Librarians and library lovers,

We hope that you and your loved ones are taking care during this
challenging time for the world. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected
countless aspects of our personal and professional lives, and the Wikimedia
Foundation is sending our very best wishes to all of you.

Equitable access to reliable, unbiased information has never been more
important. From *May 15th to June 5th*, we will be running the global
#1Lib1Ref campaign (virtually), with a focus on improving and increasing
the quality of content for the billions of people staying at home during
the public health crisis. As you may know, Wikipedia and other Wikimedia
projects have seen record-breaking pageviews in the last few weeks,
reflecting that people around the world are turning to us for trustworthy
information.[1]

With that in mind, this is a critical time to bring librarians and
Wikimedia together: more people are reading and learning from the web, and
we need to strengthen trust in our content through citations. Join us as we
do that, by helping us organize to encourage library communities to add one
more citation to Wikipedia.

What can you do?

We are advising everyone to follow WHO health guidelines
<https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019> and not
conduct in-person events. Instead, we will organize virtually, and we have
created recommendations for online meetings! Please share your digital
events so #1Lib1Ref contributors can join you
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Virtual_Coffee_Kit>
!

You can visit our resource page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Resources>
for guides on how to virtually participate in the campaign. Ensure your
contribution is recorded by using the #1Lib1Ref hashtag in your edit summary.
This is very important for us to monitor the reach and success of the
initiative.

Let us know if you need new kinds of support

We know that with the COVID-19 pandemic, it's not as easy to participate in
volunteer activities or organizing online activities. Many of us are
focusing on our families, figuring our homeschooling and working remotely,
and responding to the demands of the crisis in other ways. We also know
that certain parts of the library sector are facing difficult challenges,
such as layoffs, increased work, or extreme changes in work.

We want to know how the pandemic may affect your ability to participate in
#1Lib1Ref, as well as how we can support you better in this unprecedented
situation. Please fill out this short survey
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Virtual_Coffee_Kit>
to help us better understand how to support you during this round!

Join our communications!

You can join the 1Lib1Ref community via the Libraries (
librar...@lists.wikimedia.org), and 1Lib1Ref (1lib1...@lists.wikimedia.org)
mailing lists, or by joining the Wikimedia + Libraries User Group:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_and_Libraries_User_Group

As we get closer to the launch of the campaign next month, we will update
our social media toolkit, which you can use to spread the word about
#1Lib1Ref. Stay tuned for updates on this page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Share>.

Looking forward to #1Lib1Ref!

You can learn about last year's campaign and what we learned in our

[Wikimedia-l] #1Lib1Ref in January 2020!

2019-11-14 Thread Felix Nartey
Librarians and library lovers,

From *January 15th to February 5th* we will be joining together around the
world to make Wikipedia more reliable. You can participate in *#1Lib1Ref *by
simply adding a citation to Wikipedia's content!

That's all we ask and imagine: a world in which every librarian (or
archivist, reference professional, and scholar) adds 1 more reference to
Wikipedia. This is the fifth year of the #1Lib1Ref campaign and we couldn’t
be more excited to support another year of activities.

Full resources and guides for participating are available on the campaign
website <http://1lib1ref.org> (http://1lib1ref.org).

If you are planning to host a coffee hour
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Coffee_Kit>
or a edit-a-thon focused on #1Lib1Ref, and you need funding for the event,
you will be able to apply for a Rapid Grant
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid>. For the best chance
of approval, requests should be made in the month of November, since
requests related to #1Lib1Ref will be given priority by the Grants team
during November.

You can make sure your contribution is counted by using the Program and
Events Dashboard for your event, institution, or region, and using the
#1Lib1Ref
hashtag in your edit summary. Login to start a new event or join an
existing one for the January campaign here:
https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/campaigns/1lib1ref_january_2020/overview

Please tell your library and library-loving friends about #1Lib1Ref in
January. We need everyone's help to make Wikipedia more reliable!

You can join the 1Lib1Ref community via the Libraries (
librar...@lists.wikimedia.org), and 1Lib1Ref (1lib1...@lists.wikimedia.org)
mailing lists, or by joining the Wikimedia + Libraries User Group:

You can learn about last year's campaign and what we learnt in our recently
released blog post on Wikimedia Space:

[Wikimedia-l] 1Lib1Ref is happening again in May!

2018-04-13 Thread Felix Nartey
*Hello 1Lib1Ref Organizers,#1Lib1Ref, the annual campaign where librarians
add references to improve Wikipedia, is coming back again this year,
running from May 15th to June 5th, 2018. Why twice? We heard from you a
desire to run it again out of excitement, because May is not summer
vacation for the southern hemisphere, and because Spanish Wikipedia's
birthday also falls in May. This is a great expansion of the event and it
means that there is another opportunity to make Wikipedia more factual and
verifiable by leveraging the expertise of librarians around the world. How
does this relate to the main campaign in January? We encourage librarians,
community members, and affiliates to make 1Lib1Ref their own. So whether
we call this 1Lib1Ref May, 1Lib1Ref for the Southern Hemisphere, or
1Lib1Ref Strikes Back, the point is the excitement is building again, and
we'd like you to be a part of it.If I participated in January, do I have to
do it again in May? It's entirely up to you, this is just another chance
if you want to do more, or if you couldn't get around to January
activities. This is a pilot for us, too, so we'll see how it goes and
discuss what we learned after the May campaign. How can you get involved? -

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [African Wikimedians] What's making you happy this week? (Week of 16 August 2017)

2017-08-16 Thread Felix Nartey
Hi all,

I am excited for being awarded the Wikipedian of the year!

The amazing Wikimania video from South Africa tells me the wiki world will
be blown by what Africa has to offer in 2018. More grease to your elbow,
organizers of Wikimania 2018!

I am also very delighted about the response of the L2K and the ripple
effect of the L2K in the movement.

Cheers,

[Wikimedia-l] Wiki Indaba - Letter to Katherine (L2K)

2017-04-01 Thread Felix Nartey
Dear Katherine,

I hope this email finds you well.

As resolved from the recent Wiki Indaba 2017 in Accra, Ghana please find
attached the L2K.[1]

This letter consists of the feedback collected from participants on two
sets of questions (explained further in the letter). The organizers of
Indaba analysed this data on behalf of the African conference participants.

We would also like to take the opportunity to appreciate Wikimedia
Foundation support including Asaf Bartov and Kacie Harold from Community
Engagement, Jack Rabah from the Global Reach Team, and Zack McCune from the
Communications Team.

See you soon at our next Wiki Indaba in Tunisia.

Best,
