Here's a version of the streaks report that checked all wikis: <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Legoktm/Longest_active_user_editing_streaks>. Johnny Au is still #1, beating all other humans and bots :) Ignoring bots, Bruce1ee (also en.wp) is #2. Kocurwaclaw from pl.wp is #3. I should say that these reports are for the longest *active* daily editing streak. At least I never got around to looking for long non-active streaks, though it could be an interesting research project! If someone has ideas on some SQL to look this up, happy to turn it into a proper report. -- Kunal / Legoktm ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list -- wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines and https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia-l Public archives at https://lists.wikimedia.org/hyperkitty/list/wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org/message/BPK2BVDYEXMW5HRFXNIFNUKXU5CLMPIF/ To unsubscribe send an email to wikimedia-l-le...@lists.wikimedia.org ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list -- wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines and https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia-l Public archives at https://lists.wikimedia.org/hyperkitty/list/wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org/message/O4W4CRXS54WQAX2ZUBU3E5BXSMNXIOWF/ To unsubscribe send an email to wikimedia-l-le...@lists.wikimedia.org
[Wikimedia-l] New Board of Directors for Wikimedia Belgium
On 18 June, Wikimedia Belgium held its <https://be.wikimedia.org/wiki/2022-06-18_General_Assembly> annual general assembly. The annual accounts were approved and a new board was elected. We bid farewell to AnneJea as board member and thank her for her many years of commitment. Geert Van Pamel was re-elected president. Dominique Labar became a new board member. Mike Nicolaije and Sam Donvil complete their second year as board members. ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list -- wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines and https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia-l Public archives at https://lists.wikimedia.org/hyperkitty/list/wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org/message/FYFHQ6W543IRZYRY7XZCLHPCY5YLDDN6/ To unsubscribe send an email to wikimedia-l-le...@lists.wikimedia.org

Mike, The new course platform is really "intended to serve the entire Wikimedia movement!" - opposite to what you believe; you have access via your Wikimedia account. The platform is a real MOOC platform, unlike other MediaWiki powered sites. [Wikimedia-l] Re: Small gratitude to our fellow wikimedians
I do find this an excellent proposal. Wouldn’t it be good to also implement a user status/right “deceased” to identify those accounts? This information could be shown to their user rights page e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:UserRights/Geertivp? One could get a list of volunteers that are no longer amongst us via https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ListUsers. Perfect statement: only one correction: you need to negate the following phrase... And, if they are *un*able to read and cite it... If every country would vote an equivalent law for Free Knowledge, the world would become a better place to live... -- Geert Van Pamel -Oorspronkelijk bericht- Van: Wikimedia-l Namens Jake Orlowitz Verzonden: maandag 20 april 2020 22:11 Aan: wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Onderwerp: [Wikimedia-l] Comment Open on U.S. Open Access Policy My Letter to the U.S. Office for Science and Technology Policy regarding a proposal for federally mandate open access to publicly-funded research... --- Wikipedia is one of the ten most popular websites in the world. Each month 200,000 editors improve over 6 million articles. This vital public information is viewed on 1 billion unique devices as our pages are loaded by people around the globe 7,000 times per second. Wikipedia is the "free encyclopedia", both in its open CC-BY-SA licensing as well as the unpaid contributions of its volunteer editors. Yet Wikipedia's hundreds of thousands of editors struggle to access scholarly research. And, if they are able to read and cite it, then hundreds of millions of readers cannot verify or explore it for deeper research. Citations are the bridge between Wikipedia articles and a broader landscape of reliable, secondary sources. Citations not only allow readers to verify the reliability of the facts they find in Wikipedia; through citations readers can also deep-dive into any given topic by exploring the books, scholarly publications, and news stories referenced in an article. A recently released dataset of all citations with identifiers in Wikipedia found that less than half of the official versions of scholarly publications cited with an identifier in Wikipedia are freely available on the web. This chasm of for editors and for readers is a tragedy of public education and digital literacy. Just look at the most recent global catastrophe with Coronavirus. By April 2020 the main articles on COVID-19 had received 50 million views. Wikipedia's medical content--made up of more than 155,000 articles and 1 billion bytes of text across more than 255 languages--has been ranked as one of the top-3 most viewed sources for medical information on the entire internet. References are essential to the public's trust in Wikipedia. Indeed, Wikipedia's medical content is supported by 757,855 references in English and 1,596,528 in other languages, for a total of 2,354,383 across all languages. In English 168,985 have a PMID while 261,850 do in other languages. This means at least 430,835 references are journal articles. What happens when those journal articles lie behind a paywall? The public suffers from a dearth of good information to make decisions about their lives as independent citizens and members of a global community. As founder of The Wikipedia Library, I arranged partnerships with dozens of leading scholarly journals, to give Wikipedia editors free access to their reliable content and so they would be able to do effective and rigorous research. This time-intensive process took 6 years to amass access to only 1/5th of the most highly regarded academic publications. Frankly, Wikipedia editors--volunteers who selflessly give of their intelligence and passion to educate--should not have to beg and borrow to access publicly-funded research. Readers should not hit paywalls when they are seeking citizen-supported knowledge. I implore you to make the bold but entirely reasonable decision and ensure that taxpayers have access to the vital scientific and scholarly studies that they themselves fund. This is not only sensible, it is essential to civic health, societal progress, and human flourishing. Sincerely, Jake Orlowitz Founder of The Wikipedia Library --- "Public Access to Peer-Reviewed Scholarly Publications, Data and Code Resulting From Federally Funded Research" https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2020/02/19/2020-03189/request-for-information-public-access-to-peer-reviewed-scholarly-publications-data-and-code ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines and https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia-l New messages to: Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, <mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe> ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines and https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia-l New messages to: Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, <mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe>
[Wikimedia-l] Announcement from the Board of Wikimedia Belgium (WMBE)
Romaine has decided to step down as Board member of Wikimedia Belgium (WMBE). Following an international escalating conflict and an unauthorized email, he has been feeling stressed and prefers to live in a safe environment, and give priority to his own health. [1] It is important to provide a safe environment for all volunteers. As such the board of Wikimedia Belgium, based on a proposal of the General Assembly, has requested the Affiliate Chairs to vote to request an Internal audit (based on international best practices/standards/norms) of major WMF procedures. [2] WMBE sincerely thanks Romaine for co-founding Wikimedia Belgium and for his valued work during his years as Board member. WMBE regrets having lost one of her most active Board members. It is a loss for the association, our partners in Belgium and abroad, and for the Wikimedia community as a whole. [3] The WMBE Board temporarily assigns the Treasurer function to the Chair until a new candidate is found. The WMBE statutes allow the Board to assign technical functions outside of the Board. We would welcome candidates. [4] We hope we can return to a safe environment, and that the focus goes back to where WMBE was founded for: activities to get more free knowledge. -- The Board of Wikimedia Belgium (WMBE) -- Geert Van Pamel, Chair of Wikimedia Belgium [1] https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimedia-l/2019-June/092878.html [2] https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Request_for_WMF_Internal_audits_and_appeal_procedures [3] https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimedia-l/2019-June/092909.html [4] http://www.ejustice.just.fgov.be/tsv_pdf/2014/10/17/14190820.pdf ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines and https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia-l New messages to: Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, <mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe>
Re: [Wikimedia-l] New board for Wikimedia Belgium + evaluation behaviour WMF
The initial message was a private message from Romaine (WMBE Board member) on his own initiative; not verified, nor approved by (the Board of) Wikimedia Belgium. Please read this reply carefully in order to try to bring more clarity. I have immediately notified Romaine that he abused his function in the WMBE Board to communicate private matters on the general mailinglist. Since Monday I am in private contact, both with T and the management of Wikimedia Nederland to follow-up this dispute. This caused delay in replying to this message. The Wikimedia Belgium Board will continue to evaluate the situation and take further measures. Wikimedia Belgium wants to apologize for any moral damage that the initial message provoked. What one member of the general assembly did propose is that an internal audit could be requested to investigate the general behavior, the working, the completeness of procedures, and the treatment of cases by the Trust and Safety (T), and the grants team. Specifically, we have encountered as a chapter repeatedly during the last several years a lack of appeal, both in the T complaints handling, and in the grants team handling sAPG requests. Specifically in the T handling procedures, the rights of the alleged offender are not sufficiently guaranteed. There is a possibility that rumors are invoking a punishment without careful verification of the facts, without the defendants being sanctioned in a neutral way, and without taking into account certain handicaps like hard-hearing, or autism. That being said, please stop discussing this specific conflict publicly, because a lot of important details are missing, are single-sided interpretations, or even completely wrong. -- Geert Van Pamel, chair of Wikimedia Belgium ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines and https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia-l New messages to: Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, <mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe>
