[Wikimedia-l] (OT) In search of Wikimedians from Lithuania / Vilnius

2023-01-02 Thread Mathias Schindler
Greetings,

this is slightly offtopic and unrelated to Wikimedia in. the narrower
sense. I apologize for reaching out to this list. I work at a German NGO
dealing with human rights issues and we are looking for a Wikimedian from
Lithuania (Vilnius preferred) for two pieces of fact-checking which are
relevant to a case of litigation.

Please contact me at mathias.schind...@gmail.com for more information.

Happy new year to everyone,
Kind regards,
Mathias Schindler

Facebook has activated the "Safety Check" feature for the Paris
region. People using this platform might use this feature to let their
friends know they are in a safe location.

I can strongly encourage anyone interested in that topic to join the

Additionally, I want to point out that MEP Julia Reda has send in a
submission for the 2015 Wikimania on this very topic.

While the submission process is going its way, you might want to

Re: [Wikimedia-l] is the German/EU Policy Issues Survey a push-poll from empowerment to enabling?

2013-12-01 Thread Mathias Schindler
James,

the survey questions were developed at and after the 2013 Wikimania in
Hong Kong, the survey itself was completed in October 2013.

While comments to completed measures are always appreciated, I suggest
to monitor this list for announcements of future events. These
announcements will happen in advance and will be an invitation to
everyone to submit comments, change requests and alternative
proposals.

Recently there was a discussion on the Advocacy Advisors list about
the difference between empowering editors as per the Foundation's
mission, and merely enabling them. In trying to understand the
feedback, I took a look at the subjects listed on the Wikimedia EP
Election Questionnaire from the recent German/EU Policy Issues Survey:

 https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1vSrFiYCAN-RPXdikdkkHmT_ZzWPdD5DcDpMye9uAiHM/viewform

There is more information about the survey at
 https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/EU_policy/Survey

My concern is that the topics listed, while legitimate concerns all of
which I have been active on over the past year and past several years,
include far fewer categories which can be construed as actually
empowering people to edit, as opposed to merely altering various
technical and social systems which enable them to edit or perform
 various editing-related tasks.

I strongly recommend countering this very likely source of survey
outcome bias by asking the community about specific ways to empower
more editors, such as linking to fixmyjob.com from a banner and
supporting the ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the
Child and its protocols without reservation.

 Best regards,
 James Salsman

The main issues with the EU orphan works directive is that projects

rights that can be obtained for using such orpahn works is far too
limited. Countries implementing this directive have little choice to
fix both issues.

Could open source MT be such a strategic investment? I don't know, but
I'd like to at least raise the question. I think the alternative will
be, for the foreseeable future, to accept that this piece of
technology will be proprietary, and to rely on goodwill for any
integration that concerns Wikimedia. Not the worst outcome, but also
 not the best one.

Are there open source MT efforts that are close enough to merit
 scrutiny?

http://www.statmt.org/moses/ is live an kicking. Someone with a
background in computer linguistics should have a close look at them.

I would like to mention however that there are a couple of cases in
which commercial companies could be convinced to open source some of
their software, for example Mozilla. Google has open sourced terract
for OCR. Google might see the value of their translation efforts in
more than just the software but also in the actual integration in some
of their products (Gmail, Goggles, Glass) so that open sourcing it
would not hurt their financial interests. It appears to me that the
cost vs. the potential gain for everyone of simply asking a company
like Google or Microsoft if they are willing to negotiate.

In any case, I would love to see WMF engage in the topic of machine translation.

 I'd vote for her...

In order to do so, there are two minor prerequisites

a) We must get rid of the clause in Section 1 of Article Two of the
United States Constitution (natural born citizen). A quick look in
Wikipedia tells me that really no-one has any emotional attachment to
this clause and there have been no previous disputes over the
eligibility of candidates for this office.

or

b) We must overthrow the political system in Canada and change the
monarchy into a republic that actually has a President so that Sue can
run for it.
