[Wikimedia-l] Inviting community nominations for the Knowledge Equity Fund’s next round
Hi all, Today, we are opening nominations <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSctHahuVnJQQNG2eo_3F7aB1Z2jQi1JxhNMRuzPCWLU4dJSig/viewform> for the next round of grants from the Knowledge Equity Fund. The Knowledge Equity Fund was launched by the Wikimedia Foundation two years ago as a pilot program to advance knowledge equity, one of the two pillars of the movement strategy, through a focus on racial inequities in free knowledge. Since our launch, the Knowledge Equity Fund has gone through several iterations. Over the past several months, the Knowledge Equity Fund Committee has solicited feedback from Wikimedia communities on our approach to supporting knowledge equity. We hosted an open community call <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Knowledge_Equity_Fund/Commmunication#Notes_from_Community_Calls> on October 6 to share more about our approach and discuss ideas for future knowledge equity grants. Through this conversation and onwiki comments, we heard consistent feedback <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Knowledge_Equity_Fund/Commmunication#Follow-up_from_Knowledge_Equity_Fund_community_call> about the need to connect grantees and their work more closely with the Wikimedia projects. These suggestions have focused on increased communication and visibility into the work of the Knowledge Equity Fund and grantees; developing stronger connections between grantees and movement groups in order to drive direct impact to the Wikimedia projects, which will in turn benefit our larger mission of free knowledge; and clarifying the impact of Knowledge Equity Fund grantees. These are important suggestions that we as a Committee are taking on as we launch the next round. We’ve just shared a Diff post <https://diff.wikimedia.org/2024/01/17/we-need-your-nominations-for-knowledge-equity-fund-grantees/> with details on the changes that we’re making moving forward, including a new Connected Grants pilot that will be available to movement groups to support existing partnerships with external organizations. We will also be hosting two community calls to answer questions and hear suggestions for nominations for Round 3: - January 22, 11 am UTC - January 26, 3 pm UTC If you are interested in attending these calls, please email equityf...@wikimedia.org and we will share information to join. We welcome your nominations for organizations for Round 3! Nominations will be open through the end of February. -- *Nadee Gunasena* Chief of Staff Wikimedia Foundation <https://wikimediafoundation.org/> ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list -- wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines and https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia-l Public archives at https://lists.wikimedia.org/hyperkitty/list/wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org/message/B5PP2LUNDEAMPFZEKK6DXSXSN5YH7UQ6/ To unsubscribe send an email to wikimedia-l-le...@lists.wikimedia.org
[Wikimedia-l] Invitation for community call and Q about the Knowledge Equity Fund
Hi all, With the announcement of the Knowledge Equity Fund <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Knowledge_Equity_Fund#:~:text=The%20Fund%20seeks%20to%20address,racialized%20communities%20around%20the%20world.>’s round 2 grantees, we’ve seen a lot of questions and feedback about the Knowledge Equity Fund, how the Committee works and how the work of the grantees will contribute to the projects and to the movement. To help answer these questions, the Knowledge Equity Fund Committee will host a community conversation on Friday, October 6, 2023 at 1400 UTC <https://savvytime.com/converter/utc/oct-6-2023/2pm> to hear ideas, concerns, and to answer questions. The Committee would also like to hear ideas for how the fund should be used in the upcoming third round of grantmaking. To register for this conversation, please email us at equityf...@wikimedia.org You can also send us questions beforehand. The call will be held in English and we will have interpretation in Spanish; if you would like interpretation into other languages please let us know. If you’re not able to attend, we will also share notes and a written list of Q after the call. [Wikimedia-l] Sharing an update on the Wikimedia Foundation Knowledge Equity Fund’s grantees
Hi all, As part of the Wikimedia Foundation’s Annual Plan goal around supporting knowledge equity <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Annual_Plan/2023-2024/Goals/Equity#Equity_Fund> by supporting regional and thematic strategies, and helping close knowledge gaps, I wanted to share an update on the Knowledge Equity Fund. Earlier this year, the Foundation shared learnings from the first year <https://diff.wikimedia.org/2023/04/12/what-weve-learned-from-the-equity-funds-first-round/> of the Knowledge Equity Fund pilot, as well as reports from our first year grantees. These learnings include how we can increase visibility into the work of the grantees, and also connect the grantees with Wikimedians and local communities to enable greater understanding and more ties to the work of free knowledge on the Wikimedia projects. With these learnings in mind, today we are announcing the second round of grantees <https://diff.wikimedia.org/2023/08/03/announcing-the-second-round-of-grantees-from-the-wikimedia-foundation-knowledge-equity-fund/> from the Knowledge Equity Fund. This second round includes seven grantees that span five regions, including the Fund’s first-ever grantees in Asia. This diverse group of grantees was chosen from an initial pool of 42 nominations, which were received from across the Wikimedia movement through an open survey in 2022 and 2023. Each grantee aligns with one of Fund’s five focus areas <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Knowledge_Equity_Fund#Criteria_for_grantees>, identified to address persistent structural barriers experienced by communities of color that prevent equitable access and participation in open knowledge. They are also recognized nonprofits with a proven track record of impact in their region. The grantees include: Aliansi Masyarakat Adat Nusantara, Indonesia: The Aliansi Masyarakat Adat Nusantara <https://aman.or.id/>, or the Alliance of the Indigenous Peoples of the Archipelago (AMAN for short), is a non-profit organization based in Indonesia that works on human rights, journalism, and advocacy issues for indigenous people. Black Cultural Archives, United Kingdom: Black Cultural Archives <https://blackculturalarchives.org/> is a Black-led archive and heritage center that preserves and gives access to the histories of African and Caribbean people in the UK. Create Caribbean Research Institute, Commonwealth of Dominica: Create Caribbean Research Institute <https://createcaribbean.org/create/>is the first digital humanities center in the Caribbean. Criola, Brazil: Criola <https://criola.org.br/> is a civil society organization, based in Rio de Janeiro, dedicated to advocating for the rights of Black women in Brazilian society. Data for Black Lives, United States: Data for Black Lives <https://d4bl.org/> is a movement of activists, organizers, and scientists committed to the mission of using data to create concrete and measurable change in the lives of Black people. Filipino American National Historical Society, United States: The Filipino American National Historical Society <http://fanhs-national.org/filam/> has a mission to gather, document and share Filipino American history through its 42 community based chapters. Project Multatuli, Indonesia: Project Multatuli <https://projectmultatuli.org/en/>is an organization dedicated to non-profit journalism, especially for underreported topics, ranging from indigenous people to marginalized issues. The Equity Fund Committee, made up of five Wikimedia community members and five Wikimedia Foundation staff, have also connected each of these grantees with regional and relevant partners in the Wikimedia movement, including local and established movement affiliates who can support knowledge equity work and help grantees learn about how to connect back to the work of free knowledge on the Wikimedia projects. We continue to look for ways to increase these connections and welcome your input. This second round of grants was administered by the Wikimedia Foundation, after all remaining funds for the Equity Fund were transferred back from Tides Advocacy to the Foundation earlier this year. We welcome thoughts and questions about the Equity fund and the second round of grantees on Meta <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Knowledge_Equity_Fund>. [Wikimedia-l] Seeking community recommendations for Equity Fund grantees
Hi all, I’m writing to share the latest update on the Equity Fund, a pilot program created by the Wikimedia Foundation to address the barriers to free knowledge experienced by Black, Indigenous, and communities of color around the world. As we've shared on Diff today [1], based on feedback from the first round of Equity Fund grants we are continuing to iterate on our process for choosing grantees and increasing community participation. Today, we are opening up the second round of Equity Fund grantees and are seeking community recommendations. We know that many of you work closely with and are aware of external organizations that can help advance the movement’s goals and address equity gaps. We invite recommendations from current Wikimedia volunteers and communities through an intake form available on Google survey [2] and LimeSurvey [3]. We’ll be taking your suggestions for Round 2 through February 18. Thank you to those that have already submitted recommendations! You can read more about the current status of the Equity Fund, criteria for grantees, as well as other updates around community participation with the Equity Fund on Diff [1]. We invite your questions and feedback on Meta [4]. [Wikimedia-l] Re: Welcoming the first round of grants from the Equity Fund
Gnangarra, the first round of grantees with this pilot fund was based on suggestions from the Equity Fund Committee itself, as the Equity Fund was being created. However, we recognize that, for example, this round does not include any grantees based in Asia, and our goal is to concentrate in those regions in our next round of funding. We are also hoping to expand the diversity of grantees by asking the movement to share suggestions of grantees for the next round through this form [1]. Alongside those steps, we are continuing to evolve the Equity Fund Committee and open it up for more community participation as the Equity Fund evolves. We'll be sharing more details about that later this year. For other questions, we’ll be answering questions on the Talk page [2] so happy to address additional questions there. Hi Andreas, Thanks for your email. As Lisa shared in response to the original thread and question, the $8.7 million was used to set up a grantmaking fund at Tides Advocacy to fund two areas: 1) Funding Annual Plan Grants (APG) to the affiliates and 2) creating a $4.5 million Knowledge Equity Fund. Re: [Wikimedia-l] Farewell video for Katherine Maher
Hi Tito, Thanks for catching the difference in dates! That was my mistake, and I've updated the dates on the website to reflect the due date for submissions, which is April 12. Regarding the video, I double-checked with Legal on your license question. As the creator/ video organizer, we can decide how we use the final video that is a montage of all the video submissions, so I would be putting it under an open CC license. If you are asking about what kind of video you can upload to Tribute, I would also recommend only using freely licensed content. Let me know if that answers your question. [Wikimedia-l] You are invited to a global virtual celebration for Wikipedia’s 20th birthday!
Hi all, As many of you know, Wikipedia is celebrating a big milestone next month with the 20th birthday on January 15th, 2021. In honor of the birthday, we will be hosting a virtual birthday party for the global communities on January 15th from 4-5 pm UTC (check out your local time [1])! Please join us on a Youtube livestream [2] where we will celebrate all of the volunteers and community members who have built this movement over the last 20 years. This celebration will include remarks from community members about how they have seen the movement grow over the 20 years and their wishes for the future, as well as from Jimmy Wales and Katherine Maher. We’d also love to hear from all of you! This celebration is a chance for us to come together and to recognize the people behind our projects that make this all possible. We’ll be highlighting community milestones and achievements over the past year. Tell us what you’ve been working on, and big moments you’d like to call out from the past year! You can share details on the Meta page for the 20th virtual birthday party [3] and we’ll include those during the virtual event. We’ll also be sharing more details soon about other ways to participate. This virtual birthday party is just one of many activities that are being planned around the movement for the 20th birthday. You can check out the Wikipedia 20 birthday hub [4] to learn more about local and regional events, birthday images, media activities and other resources for community celebrations. If you have any questions, you can also reach the Wikimedia Foundation’s 20th birthday committee at wikipedi...@wikimedia.org. We are looking forward to celebrating with you!
