[Wikimedia-l] The AfroCine Project: Update from the Team

2022-11-02 Thread Sam Oyeyele
Dear Wikimedians,

The AfroCine Project team will once again like to thank everyone who has
contributed towards ensuring the success of this initiative over the past few
years. Due to your valued efforts, we have been able to add over 10,000 quality
articles to Wikipedia in over 20 different languages. Over 15 countries have
also been directly impacted through this project.

The team will also like to inform you of the leadership changes that the
Afrocine project has gone through over the past couple of months. After more
than 4 years of leading this project since its inception, I will be stepping
down as the Project lead. I want to use this opportunity to thank the project
team and the wider community for the trust bestowed on me to steer the project
over the years and the support I have received all the way.

I am handing over the baton to Ayo Odedere and Eben Calist Mlay, as the Project
Co-leads. These two long standing members of the Wikimedia community have been
very crucial in steering the direction of this project over the past years and
I trust that they are able to move the project forward with new perspectives
and innovation, while I continue to support the project in other ways. I also
implore the community to support them in the same way I have been supported.

While there won’t be a major contest this year, the new team is organising a
brief stint in this month of November, which would be shared accordingly soon
and we look forward to your participation! If you need any information or have
any query regarding this contest or the project, feel free to contact the team
on: i...@afrocineproject.org.

Thank you very much for your constant support in running this project with
success.

With regards,
Sam Oyeyele
On behalf of the AfroCine Project team.

[Wikimedia-l] Afrocine: Conclusion of the 2020 Months of African Cinema Global Contest

2021-04-26 Thread Sam Oyeyele
Greetings!

The Months of African Cinema Global
Edit-a-thon
was concluded on 30 November 2020,[1] and we want to send a big thank you to
all the participants who helped make it a success! Over 3,200 articles were
created across 19 language Wikipedias, surpassing all expectations and placing
the contest firmly as one of the most successful article-writing contests on
Wikipedia.

We also want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who volunteered to
be part of the jury team. It was very complicated trying to assess the quality
of 3,000 articles, but we did it! All our winners have now been announced and
you can check the complete list
here.[2]

Thank you so much for being part of this global event! Thank you for helping to
fix African content gaps on Wikipedia! We hope to see more of your
participation in future AfroCine events and activities. Please remember to sign
up on the main WikiProject participants’ page,[3] and on the meta page[4] to
get updated with these activities.

Thanks,

Sam,

On behalf of The AfroCine Project team.

[Wikimedia-l] Afrocine: Participate in the Months of African Cinema

2020-08-07 Thread Sam Oyeyele
[Apologies for cross-posting]

In so much excitement, after successful iterations of the Months of African
Cinema global contest[1] for the past years, we are happy to announce that it
will be happening again this year, starting from October to November. In the
past editions of the contest, over 2,000 Wikimedia pages were created across
different Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia commons) and in
more than 10 different languages.

The contest is organized by a Wikimedia project called “The Afrocine Project”
[2] , which is a Wikimedia project dedicated to improving the coverage of the
history, works, people, places, events, etc, that are associated with the
cinema, theatre and arts of Africa, African countries, the Caribbean, and the
diaspora.

If you would love to join us in organizing this exciting event, through the
coordination of local programmes around African cinema (independently or
otherwise) in your community or local language Wiki, kindly list your
organization or country as a participant on the organizer’s meta page.[3] If
you would need some funding to run your planned programmes, the Wikimedia
Foundation has a rapid grant programme in place for this purpose and the
AfroCine Project team would guide you through the application process.

If you have further questions, complaints, suggestions, etc., please reach out
to us personally or right here on the mailing list or the project talkpage.

Thank you!

Sam.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Yahoo/AOL warning

2019-11-17 Thread Sam Oyeyele
Not just G-mails; I use hotmail (outlook), and all e-mails from Yahoo and AOL
end up in my spam folder. I have tried everything possible to stop this from
happening to no avail, but I see now that this isn't specific to just me, or
the configuration of my mail.

Kindly,
Sam.

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Yahoo/AOL warning

(I'm not the most technical person, so feel free to correct imprecisions or
add better suggestions)
It feels like a blast from the past, but it turns out there's still a fair
amount of Yahoo/AOL users that are part of our community.

Just a fair warning: as has been known for a while now (at least 2013
), yahoo (and AOL?) emails
through mailman lists are often treated as spam by gmail email recipients.

This has gotten worse: I understand Yahoo may have blacklisted
lists.wikimedia.org altogether, and emails are bouncing. I noticed for some
50-100 email Yahoo and AOL addresses on the Wiki Loves Monuments mailing
list that they bounced back, and eventually got automatically unsubscribed.

So if you or a friend has a Yahoo or AOL email address - you/they may be at
risk of being unsubscribed from (some?) Wikimedia mailing lists without
notification. The only 'fix' that you can do, that I'm aware of, is slowly
moving to a different provider, if you want to be active on these lists.

The issue is being tracked without much visible activity here:
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T232417 (there may be more relevant
tickets).

Best,
Lodewijk

[Wikimedia-l] Join the Months of African Cinema Global Edit-a-Thon

2019-09-24 Thread Sam Oyeyele
Greetings!

Apologies for cross-posting. After a successful first iteration of the “Months
of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be
happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the
contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages.
There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought
the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.
About 9 in-person events were also organised for the edit-a-thon in different
parts of the world.

The contest is organized by a Wikimedia project called "The AfroCine
Project",[1] which is dedicated to improving the coverage of the history,
works, people, places, and events, that are associated with the cinema, theatre
and arts of Africa, African countries, the Caribbean, and the diaspora.

If you would love to join this exciting event, please list your username as a
participant on the English Wikipedia contest page.[2] If you would love to lead
this contest for your country or community, please list your name in the
coordinators page here.[3] The rapid grants team would be accepting proposals
throughout October and November, in case you'd need funds to run local
edit-a-thons or some other activities related to this event. Upon listing your
name on the coordinators' page, you'd be contacted to talk about the resources
you'd need to run the event in your community. You can also contact me directly
for any clarifications.

Finally, We also need volunteers to handle some aspects of the AfroCine
project. These aspects include:

1. Community Liaison: This role essentially involves closely engaging with
local communities to support their activities within the scope of Afrocine.

2. Communications: This involves the communications aspects of the project.
Sharing relevant information on mailing lists and social media would be the
responsibility of this person.

3. MAC Jury: This role involves joining the jury of Months of African Cinema
contest. We need as many people as we can get :).

4. Tools: Going forward, we would need relevant tools to better track the
metrics and also analyse the general impact of these events. We are calling for
Wikimedia volunteers who can navigate wikimedia tools that can be useful for
the project.

If you would love to help with any of these roles, or some other roles that
have not been mentioned, please contact me directly.

If you have further questions, complaints, suggestions, etc., please reach out
to me personally or right here on the mailing list or the project talkpages.

Thank you!

Sam Oyeyele.

[Wikimedia-l] Afrocine: The Months of African Cinema Continues.....

2018-11-19 Thread Sam Oyeyele
Greetings!

Thank you very much to those who have signed up to participate in the Months of
African
Cinema<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_AfroCine/Months_of_African_Cinema>
global contest/edit-a-thon, and thank you for your contributions so far.

We are moving towards the conclusion of the contest and a lot have been
achieved already! We have been able to get over about 300 articles created in
over eight (8) languages! The figures soars to up to a thousand, if Wikidata
entries are included. Furthermore, there have been about 6 in-person gatherings
of Wikipedians in different countries across the world to create articles about
African(a) cinema!

We are very excited about what has been achieved so far, but your contributions
are still needed to further exceed all expectations! Let’s create more articles
before the end of this contest, which is this November!!!

  * Article suggestions can be found
here<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_AfroCine/Article_Suggestions>.
You can also add to this list.
  * Some notable reliable sources for African cinema can be found
here<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_AfroCine/Reliable_Sources>.
 Again, this list needs expansion.
  * Interested in Wikidata translation? check out the Occupation
Drive<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Wiki_Loves_Women/Occupations>,
which is being led by Wiki Loves Women, in support of the contest and the
project!
  * Please remember to list articles you have created or improved in the
Article
Achievements<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_AfroCine/Months_of_African_Cinema#Article_achievements>
section of the contest page, so that they can be easily tracked.

Thank you once again for being part of this global event!

Kindly,

Sam Oyeyele.

[Wikimedia-l] Join Us on the AfroCine Project!

2018-09-21 Thread Sam Oyeyele
Greetings!

Apologies for cross-posting. This is to introduce a new Wikimedia project
called "The AfroCine Project".[1] This new project is dedicated to improving
the coverage of the history, works, people, places, events, etc, that are
associated with the cinema, theatre and arts of Africa, African countries, the
Caribbean, and the diaspora. If you would love to be part of this (or you're
already active in this area), by coordinating local programmes around African
cinema (independently or otherwise) in your community or local Wiki, kindly
list your username or organization as a participant on the meta project page
cited above.

Furthermore, In the months of October and November, we are organizing a global
contest and edit-a-thon tagged: "The Months of African Cinema".[2] If you would
love to join this exciting event, also list your username as a participant on
the English Wikipedia contest page. If you would love to lead this contest (or
any other relevant program) for a non-English Wikipedia community, please feel
free to translate the English Wikiproject page to your local language
Wikipedia, or you can create one from scratch!

If you have any questions, complaints, suggestions, etc., please reach out to
me personally or right here on the mailing list or the project talkpages.

Thank you!

Library Data project

*Hi everybody and sorry for crossposting,Wikimedia Sverige is proud to be
the recipient of $65,500 in support from the Swedish National Library for
our project Library Data.We will work in collaboration with the Swedish
National Library to include a number of datasets onto Wikidata, such as
data about authors, libraries and different special databases of
bibliographies[1]. This is a pilot project where we aim to discuss with the
community what to include and what to exclude. Based on the discussions and
the requests from the community we will design a continuation of this
project (if this first part is deemed successful continuous funding is
possible for 3-4 more years). We started investigating a possible long term
partnership with the National Library in 2017 when Wikimedia Sverige
delivered inputs to the new National Strategy for the Library Sector on how
Sweden's libraries can work with Wikimedia for mutual benefits.[2] The
National Library has just made history as the world's first national
library to fully transition to Linked Open Data (BIBFRAME 2.0),[3] so the
timing could not have been better; we are now in position to examine how
this move can benefit Wikidata and other Wikimedia projects. Please contact
the project manager André Costa (andre.co...@wikimedia.se
) or the developer Alicia Fagerving
(alicia.fagerv...@wikimedia.se ) if you have
any questions. As always, you can find the full application on our wiki (in

I am sad to know this news about User:Bhadani's demise.

I knew him as a very wise person with an open mind.

That he chose to write his autobiography as a Wikipedian shows how much he
valued the movement.

My heartfelt condolences to his family.
