[Wikimedia-l] Re: Wikimedia MediaWikis for Blogging?

2022-12-15 Thread Sam Wilson
There is some sort of blogging possible on Wikiversity:
https://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Help:Blog

Over at WMAU we're using a wiki as (sort of) a blogging system:
https://wikimedia.org.au/wiki/News (although it doesn't have RSS yet…
that is in the works).

Other than RSS, I think there are a few crucial bits missing from
MediaWiki to make it a good blogging tool. Extensions such as WikiSEO
and Cargo can fill some of these.

I see big benefits if blogging is about Wikimedia.
Shortcomings I can imagine are potentially with:
vandalism, limited visual design + embedding options,
Confusions with User vs. Main namespace…
any others?

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Member management system

2021-12-19 Thread Sam Wilson
I think CiviCRM is a common one amongst affiliates. WMAU used it for a
while, but we found that having separation between the financial system
(xero.com, where the actual membership dues are payed and recorded) and
the membership system was too annoying and the latter was never kept up
to date. We retired it a few years ago.

I've often wondered about building something lightweight that works
within MediaWiki, because that's where everyone already has an account,
and it already has a 'current-member' user group. Would probably still
have issues with the financials side of it (but then again, I'm not
really convinced that having membership fees are really worth it, so
that might make it simpler!).

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Practical implications of Coronavirus

2020-03-10 Thread Sam Wilson
Jitsi is also integrated into Riot (the Matrix client). I was in a group
trying it out a couple of weeks ago, and it worked really well. If there
are two people in a room, it uses a direct connection, and if there are
three or more it uses Jitsi (both inside the Riot interface, so there's
no need to set up separate URLs or anything).

Hi,

I believe it likely is too early to make a decision. We have a

professional

team at the WMF monitoring the situation, but the date is still 5

months

in

the future.

It is reasonable to expect that we may need to make adjustments to the
situation as it develops and in 2-3 months it will be much clearer

where

we

stand.

For now, I think it is already fair to say that the WMF leadership is

not

shying away from difficult decisions (the summit cancellation, closing

down

the office, canceling international travel for staff) and clearly
prioritizes our safety.

I trust the judgment of our staff when they communicate clearly that

they

are considering all options and will.make a decision in due time.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] New style banner - A heads up

2017-08-24 Thread Sam Wilson
Peter,

Fair enough, I agree that the idea that Wikimedia would have been a
success if it'd be made commercial is crazy. "Has it crossed my mind how
much we could have made if it had ads? Sure. But it wouldn’t be the
same." reads to me as just a hypothetical "if it were as it is today
*and* had ads", rather than any serious suggestion that that would ever
have been the case. I reckon it makes sense to the non-editor people
it's aimed at.

Anyway, about my grammar nickpicking? ;-)

okay to me, personally. :-)

Anyway, the only thing I notice with it is that it starts with "We
