[Wikimedia-l] Update on Croatian Wikipedia evaluation

2021-06-14 Thread Xeno (Jack)
Hello,

This message is a follow-up to the 2021 April meeting of Arbitration
Committee members and other functionaries [1] from many Wikimedia projects.
During that meeting, there was a presentation and discussion about Croatian
Wikipedia and the challenges faced by that project. The discussion was
informed by a recent evaluation the Wikimedia Foundation commissioned to
better understand current and past challenges of Croatian Wikipedia. The
decision to conduct the evaluation was a result of the significant and
ongoing community concerns raised on Meta and elsewhere.

The summary of the evaluation is now available on Meta [2] and the full
report is available on Commons [3]. These documents also describe
significant changes that were implemented by the local and global community
since that meeting.

Ongoing round-table sessions [4] and the upcoming functionary meetings in
June and July [5] may include discussions about the broader recommendations
made in this report.

We welcome community members interested in discussing these topics to
attend.

Thank you,

-Xeno (WMF)

Hi Xeno,

Thanks. Good to see that an effort has finally been made to address this.

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Update on Croatian Wikipedia evaluation

2021-06-14 Thread Željko Blaće
Thank you for publishing this, but in all honesty it feels as a bit
too little too late.

After a quick reading of the summary I am somewhat disappointed that
the investigation commissioned by WMF was so reductive in presenting
the complexity of the situation (it is not all about the language) and
keeping it content centric *(with very few people/social centric
observations). WMF also did not reflect on more than a decade of
itself being a more-less passive observer (if even observer) of
frustrations of contributors to Wikipedia in Croatian language*
(calling it Croatian Wikipedia is a part of the problem as it adds to
the nation-state perception of Wikipedia). In this decade aspirations
with UCoC makes me wonder how WMF's lack of action would pass here?

For Wikipedians who spent over a decade asking for help *(many have
burned out and will not return even now that situation is better) it
would likely be useful to hear some kind of a sign of apology for the
lack of interest, oversight and support on the WMF side. As for the
recommendations presented, these at best may be well intended but also
seem fairly technocratic in approach and naive at what the capacities
and conditions of work are in the wider context and in the project
itself.

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Sharing more details about the Equity Fund

2021-06-14 Thread Lisa Gruwell
Thank you to those who attended our Equity Fund Office Hours. We had a
small turnout with about three people attending the second session (evening
UTC) earlier today to speak with the Equity Fund Committee and learn more
about the fund. It was a constructive conversation and we learned of some
particular challenges in India that are barriers for participation in our
projects. We are adding the questions that were asked and the answers in
the Knowledge Equity Fund FAQ
.
Thank you to those who attended.

My 2 cents on some of the points in this thread:

   1.

Definitely complete the form, Sam! Those projects seem very interesting
and definitely worthy of exploration for this. Thank you for sharing them.
   2.

We want to be clear: This fund is insufficient to solve the problems
with Knowledge Inequity as it relates to race. We are aiming to make
progress and work with others who also advance this work.
   3.

Knowledge Equity is a central part of the 2030 Strategic Direction and
our donors were included in the conversations that got us there. They very
much want equity to guide our work. Last year, Katherine and Janeen
published a very clear stand on racial justice

that led to this fund. While we can’t mention every WMF program in the
space of a banner, we do include more information about WMF
programs in the donor
   FAQ which is
linked on every banner with more links to our plans, annual reports,
announcements and more detail regarding our programs. In terms of the
Knowledge Equity Fund, we announced it in the press release

that we posted for Wikipedia’s 20th birthday in January in seven
languages. It is also in our 2019-2020 fiscal year Audit Report
   . More
information on the Knowledge Equity Fund
    is now on meta.
We look forward to sharing more information about the Fund’s progress with
the community and donors alike later this summer.
   4.

To clarify, this is not a $4.5 million grant to Tides Advocacy for their
programs around racial inequity. Instead, the Equity Fund Committee

sets the direction of the fund, identifies grantees and submits them to
Tides for review and administration. The Equity Fund Committee is
identifying grantees that fit in the five focus areas

to address racial inequity and free knowledge, and will benefit the
   Wikimedia movement.

Thanks again for the questions and suggestions. We welcome any follow-up or
additional questions on the Talk page

.

Best,

Lisa

[Wikimedia-l] Australian prejury finishes June 30

2021-06-14 Thread Margaret Donald
Dear wikimedians
who have been so kind as to help us with our prejury.
This is a note to remind you that our prejudging finishes on June 30, so
there are just 15 days to finish rating our entries.

If you are minded to complete the task, I would suggest you just zoom
through, grading on the image only and without concern as to whether
images satisfy competition requirements, as that issue has largely been
dealt with.)

Thank you again for all your help.
