[Wikimediaindia-l] First Telugu wiki academy conducted on 6 Oct 2009 at Chirala engineering college, chirala

2009-10-06 Thread arjuna rao chavala
Hi
I am glad to report that I have conducted first Telugu wiki academy
conducted on 6 Oct 2009 at Chirala engineering college, chirala, a
small coastal town in Prakasam district Andhra Pradesh, with kind
cooperation from the college authorities.

About 120 third and final year engineering students participated in
the three hour session in which about 1.5 hours were spent on hands on
practice with telugu typing and changes to the articles in telugu
wikipedia. Lab facility with about 60 computers and 2 MB internet
pipe was very helpful in making this event a success. There were
minor technical glitches like wikipedia limiting access to only 6
accounts from the IP proxy. which need to be addressed for doing
events like this in future.

As Andhra pradesh has over 600 such engineering colleges, doing one
such event in each college can give a boost to promoting Telugu
wikipedia.

More on this on my blog http://teluginux.blogspot.com in a week's time.

Regards
Arjun

[Wikimediaindia-l] Online encyclopedia in Kannada

2009-10-06 Thread Shiju Alex
If the tentative plan fructifies, *there will be an online encyclopedia in
Kannada*, similar to Wikipedia in English, an online encyclopedia, expected
to launch on November 1 by the CM BS Yeddyurappa.

>From the below link.

http://www.expressbuzz.com/edition/story.aspx?Title=KDA%E2%80%99S+big+plans+for+rajyotsava&artid=O1pQmSPtupQ=&SectionID=Qz/kHVp9tEs=&MainSectionID=wIcBMLGbUJI=&SectionName=UOaHCPTTmuP3XGzZRCAUTQ==&SEO=

Any idea about the license that is going to be used in this online
encyclopedia? Is Government is planning for a Wiki? Is Government is aware
about the existence of a Kannada Wikipedia?

Kannada Wikipedians, any idea about this news?

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] FW: my querry has remained unanswered for long

2009-10-06 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
Recently the Unicode consortium published its latest standard. Among them
where additions to the Devangari script. As I understand it, the new glyphs
are technically supported in MediaWiki.. MediaWiki does not care; it just
stores the values. I KNOW because I have been told that there are issues
with the technical support of your languages in MediaWiki. It is very much
needed to find the best possible fonts. At the same time I urge you all to
publish all the known issues for your languages at the language_issues page
on Meta.

You can also help yourself by following the example that exists for Telugu
and provide us with a sorted list of all the characters for you language.
This will then be inserted in the "advanced toolbar" of the Usability
Initiative. A list for Devangari, Tamil, Kannada ... would be most welcome
!!

As I published on all Wikipedias, we REALLY want to know if there are
cultural aspects in MediaWiki that make it less usable. There are two parts
to this question; obviously a lack of localisation will make the software
unusable. However, it is not a given that even with the best localisation
there are no issues left. Please help yourself by localising the "Usability
Initiative" software once you finished the "most wanted" messages. Please
report all the issues that are left at the usability_issues page on Meta.
Thanks,
  GerardM
