My personal opinion is even if we fail to release a CD/DVD; i think should
 try make one.
It will help to improve the quality of wikipedias.

I think ultimate aim 'Wikipedia India Conference' is to improve the quality
 of contents in wikimedia projects.

Other 'Wikipedia India Conference' will just a meetup.
I am ready to help if anyone is starting this project .

Not a good idea unless few language communities (at least 6-7) are ready
for the selection, proof reading, verifying image licenses, and so on.
Selection and creation of offline content is not at all a small task. Much
effort is required for it. Also from each language community the support of
at least 10 active contributors are required. As of now not many Indic
language communities are ready for it. Also the exclusion of selected
articles from inactive wikis is not a good idea when we are trying for
 public outreach.

Another possible and easiest option would be releasing a Commons CD/DVD
that contains copyleft images related to India. Malayalam wikimedians
already done a test release of Commons images along with the Wikisource CD.
The release of such a CD/DVD can be done with less effort.

 Would like to know:
 1. Is there a budget already?
 2. Will this be fully or partially funded by anyone.
 3. Are we raising funds for the Conference expenses or will we be
raising funds for the Foundation. I have no views/preferences...just
like to know so that when we approach possible sponsors we communicate
 correctly.

 The Starting Point should be:
For The Conf Organising Committee to outline the schedule/programme
 and expected scale.
I assume it is a 3 day Event

Once we have that as a base document all other teams can get to work
 around that pale blue print.

The Fund Raising Team will analyse all the fund raising opportunities
around the programme and work from there.

hi Fae,

I think User:AroundTheGlobe's suggestion would be great to get you people to
help with the hosting/coaching people who'd like to edit in the South Asian
languages in addition to the editathon.

For people who cannot directly make it to London, I believe there is
provision for e-volunteering as well. If you could elaborate on that, it'd
be great.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia Foundation research

2011-06-16 Thread Patricia Sauthoff
Dear Indian-language Wikipedians,

I've been tasked with studying the history of the Hindi-language Wikipedia
this summer for the Wikimedia Foundation. We're trying to find out what
makes this Wikipedia unique. To do this I am also looking at the culture of
other Indian-language Wikipedias to compare and contrast them with the Hindi
Wikipedia. (This Wikipedia was chosen by the Foundation because the fellow
-- me -- is a student of Hindi and Urdu rather than another Indian
language.)

I'll be traveling to India in July and August and would love to meet with
some of you one-on-one. I'd also like to conduct email and/or skype
interviews with anyone interested in this project. My aim to get the stories
about why you do this, why you think it's important, and what your
experience has been. The more people I talk to the more complete the final
project, which will be published (in English) online will be.

You can read more about the project here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:WikiHistories_fellowship and,
because this is Wikipedia, you're more than welcome to help edit the
information on the charts herein. I'm just starting to learn my way around
the Hindi Wikipedia (I've been a sometimes editor on the English Wikipedia
for quite some time) so any nudges in the correct direction are more than
appreciated.

Thanks! I look forward to talking to some of you in the very near future.
