Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [WikiConference-India 2011] [Wikimedia-in-mum] Vote for the Conference Logo

2011-09-25 Thread Shekhar Krishnan
The thread is here:

https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/private/wikiconference-india/2011-September/001255.html

The revised/corrected logo here:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WikiConference_India_Logo_2.svg
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WikiConference_India_Logo_1.png

The original logo here, which reads "chikree" or "vikree" and not "wiki":

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_Conference_India_logo.svg
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_Conference_India_logo_%28with_dates%29.svg

I agree this is very late in the day, but since the error was detected,
confirmed, and the logo resubmitted for vote, 16 days have passed
without a clear decision.

Can we have a decision within 24 hours? Everyone please vote by 12pm IST
tomorrow 27 September 2011 to adopt the revised logo or stay with the
old one.

Thanks,

Shekhar

[Wikimediaindia-l] India Hackathon and language teams

2011-09-25 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
As you may know there will be a hackathon that will be running in parallel
to the conference. I blogged about it on the WMF blog and we hope to learn
from you what technical things we can do to make our projects thrive in
India. http://blog.wikimedia.org/2011/09/25/india-hackathon-2011/

We have found that for many languages there are things unclear about the
language. These things hamper us in providing solutions. You can imagine
that even with Santhosh knowing as much as he does about the languages of
India there are still plenty things he does not know or where he is not the
best person to learn all the minute details of one language when there are
so many languages in India alone. The idea that we have is that a group of
people from each language community, people with an intimate knowledge of
their language are much better placed to provide us with the information
that we are looking for.

One of the things we will ask these people is to review and possible create
the information for their language at the Unicode CLDR. Not only MediaWiki
uses this data for its software, applications like OpenOffice require the
information provided to allow a language to be used with its text processor.
When there are not enough qualified people available in our community, we do
want you to look elsewhere for people who are qualified and willing to help.

This request for help is made by me on behalf of the Wikimedia Localisation
Team. We would like you to use translatewiki.net as the platform from where
we can coordinate this effort. It already has portals for all the languages
supported by the Wikimedia Foundation and in addition there are languages
that are still in the incubator.

When you want to provide information for a language that is currently not
available in translatewiki.net, we are very happy to create a portal for any
and all language that is recognised as a language in the ISO-639-3.
Thanks,
 GerardM

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [WikiConference-India 2011] [Wikimedia-in-mum] Vote for the Conference Logo

2011-09-25 Thread Shekhar Krishnan
I changed the logo on the main site today, but this was rolled back with
a question of whether it had been approved by Jayantha and User:Wikitanvir.

There has already been a long thread on this where nobody disagreed, and
all said that the spelling errors and mis-reading in Devnagari must be
fixex. I think we should close the discussion and adopt the revised
logos. The full set of logos, banners and icons are uploaded here:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WikiConference_India_2011_Banner.png

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WikiConference_India_2011_Icon.png

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WikiConference_India_Logo_2.svg

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WikiConference_India_Logo_1.png

I accept full blame for earlier proposing this flawed design which read
as "chikri" or "vikri", and had an incorrect matra for "wiki" in
Devnagari. I have worked with the designer to create revised versions
for all our purposes, from banners to icons to conference shwag.

I urge that we adopt these *across* all sites, conference as well as
registration, and on all other banners.

The registration page is still using the old logo (they should replace
it with the banner image above) and the header icon on the conference
page still has the old logo (should be replaced with the icon png above).

I'm not sure who's in-charge of the registration site and the header,
but am happy to work with them to provide graphics based on the revised
logo.

Best,

Shekhar
