[Wikimediaindia-l] Images in wikipedia

2012-02-27 Thread nischay nahata
When using wikipedia and clicking on an image it opens up on a new page.
Wouldn't it be nice if it just scaled-up on the same page using JS. Is
there an extension there for this? and if yes why not implemented on
wikipedia?

I don't exactly get what you mean; something like Popups? (

2012-02-27 Thread Ashwin Baindur
Nischay, when you click on an image it opens up in a new page, as you are
aware. If you click on the image again all the html vanishes and only the
image remains in your browser window for you to save, etc.

The functionality is same as that from a js. Personally, I detest the js
myself.

Warm regards,

Ashwin Baindur

2012-02-27 Thread Swaroop Rao
Popups primarily display text, and any image in the target page is shown
even smaller in size. I'm guessing that's not what Nischay's looking for;
but there may be a gadget for that somewhere that someone wrote! If you
think such a gadget will be useful, one can always write it if it doesn't
exist.

You can activate popups from your preferences/settings after logging in to
activate the hover and preview feature.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Images in wikipedia

2012-02-27 Thread praveenp
By user level customization it is possible. I think providing such a
feature by default, in wiki level, in projects like wikipedia is a bad
idea because each file page contains much more data than a pop up
layer can afford. Unlike facebook or google plus, only relevant and
properly licensed pictures, remain undeleted in wikimedia projects. So
all informations present in media pages, including license, category,
included pages, details about the file, etc are important for an
encyclopedic project. So current style file pages are not replacable
(atleast for now). Still user customization possible for those who not
interested in such details.

Hey, that's just one opinion :)

I think that it's a pretty good idea. It just need the right design. I
see no problem at all with showing the image like in Google+ with the
license fine-print under it.

The wikitech-l and foundation-l mailing lists are the best places to
discuss it. And maybe also the Village Pump of Commons:

OFFTOPIC, but very important ;)

*Anirudh Bhati wrote...*

Okay, I'm starting the WikiProject India beer/soft drink pool. Henceforth,
anybody who sign's off on the list with four tildes () instead of
normally, owes a sixpack of beer/three large bottles of beer to the common
pool. These will be kept accumulated till the next WikiConference when we
drink this all in a huge party. Teetotallers will get 1 litre soft drink
bottles of their choice more if their constitutions can withstand it
instead of the beer.

Oops, I'm guilty too so let's begin the pool with Anirudh me. We have six
bottles in the pool already. Don't say you haven't been warned! Any
representations will result in doubling of the fine.

Anybody who objects to this proposal is permitted to do so but will have to
pay the community a wiki-lawyering fee of sixpack of beer/three large
bottles of beer to the common pool. Don't say you haven't been warned!

Pretty soon, we should have enough for the party!

Coming to think of that, Wouldn't it be nice to have an automatic script or
macro to be incorporated in a JS, or within the mail writer module or list
mailer to automatically convert to the registered sender's user ID?
:)

Any takers?

Glad that you liked the idea. The general public don't care about
license and stuff. If the images open as a pop-up its going to increase
the usability for them.Lets see what others have to say and what
design conditions are necessary for that.
