Just to follow up on the minutes of Mumbai X - we would like to invite
members of the national wikicommunity to come and support WikiConference
 2011, Mumbai/Pune.

It was felt important that to move forward we need an Event Organising
Committee (OC) for the WikiConference and sub-committee members. Kindly note
we are not looking for people who just lend their names but people who will
actually come forward and put in time and effort in the entire 6 month
 preceding period.

 Sub-Committees suggested:

•Conference Programming (Includes Themes, Tracks, Keynote Speakers and
 Scheduling)
Deciding the direction this meet should take.

•Finance (Includes both budgeting, raising finances and scholarships)
People who are either qualified or have experience preferred. Handling
 finance of such an event

 •Conference Venue and Catering
Coordination of venue and catering booking to helping things move on the
 floor during the event

 •Major Events (Attendee Party/Mega Event)
Undertaking responsibility of any major events other than actual conference

 •Press and Media coordination
Deciding on a path for media promotion of event, giving interviews,
inviting media and taking care of them during the event

 •Accommodation and Registration
Reserving the accommodation, picking people up and making sure they find
their accommodation, registering people on the event day.

 •Promotion and Advertisement
There will be a promotion budget which will have to be judiciously used for
maximum benefit - again person with experience or qualification preferred.

 •Technical and IT
Running the event site, setting up wifi and other electronic goods, webcast
of the event online for those who cannot make it in person

 •Volunteer
On ground. Running around during the event

Whoever is interested in being on the OC or any of the sub-committees,
kindly write to the Mumbai list (*wikimedia-in-...@lists.wikimedia.org*).

 Community-Chapter Relations

 Hi Wikimedians

We wholeheartedly supported the Mumbai-Pune bid for organising the
conference. It has received widespread community support from Wikipedians
across the country on the mailing list. We also take note of the fact that
there is no visible active intent to make a bid to host the event from other
 cities.
The previous note from Executive Committee (EC) clearly indicates the
intent and commitment to run an annual event, year on year, with the support
of other stakeholders in the movement. To that end we request that the
organising team of this year's event keep this an important objective.
EC had previously made a proposal for such an event many in early 2011 but
it was then deferred to September due to other procedural hurdles in getting
all aspects of a formal entity up and running - A bank account being a
 prerequisite to execute the plan.
EC regrets the communication gaps and discomfort caused in some quarters
due to misunderstandings of intent which our earlier email clearly and
directly addresses. The Wikimedia movement is community driven and we
reiterate that involving the community is and will be a key priority for
 your Chapter and Executive Committee.
We request everyone's support for the Mumbai-Pune efforts to organise the
 2011 WikiConference.
Please consider this note a full and complete support of the India Chapter
for the event. We thank the Mumbai and Pune Wikimedians again for the
passion and leadership in working towards organising the first edition of
 this event.
We will engage and work with the Mumbai team and other Wikipedians on the
specific aspects of the frame work. As indicated in the earlier email, it
was meant to be a draft seeking comments from other stakeholders.
There were a few other aspects that were highlighted to which we would like
 to provide the following:
*Feedback #1: Treat us like equals and stakeholders. Amongst us, chapter
will then be first among equals.*
The Chapter is only a part of the Community and should be reflective of it.
If the impression was otherwise, we apologise

 Hi Folks

I'm deliberately opening a new mail chain on this. This is at the risk of
me being told off for doing so - but I believe that email protocol is one
thing - but communication philosophy is (arguably) even more critical.

I (and personally upsetting to me, others at India Programs - namely
Nitika the Campus Ambassadors) have taken some beating over the past few
 days.  Some has been personal and not been circumspect or constructive;
not pretty. I have been touched by the offlist messages of comfort and
support that I and the others have got.

I am exceedingly worried about the impact it has had on team morale. To
all those who have criticised the India Education Program, spare a thought
for the volunteers who have helped out on this. I want to tell the Campus
Ambassadors to be strong and keep your chins up. You guys have been
incredible. Hand on heart, you have given your hearts and souls and have
conducted probably the single biggest Wikipedia outreach program in the
world. (btw, I really don't care if someone wants to tag this as {citation
required.}) You have taken time out of your working lives and college
days. I know how tough it's been - conducting more than 100 in-class
sessions, working with so many students and faculty, reaching out on email
and talk pages and SMS and mobile calls and social networks and in
canteens, poring over student entries, learning Wikipedia policies,
figuring out new tools to help your work, building relationships with
other editors across the globe, doing the back-breaking documentation
that's been required on project course pages, and I can go on and on and
on. I know that sustaining this level of motivation and energy over months
has been hard on you. I also know some of you faltered. I know some of
you wanted to scream and kick someone some times, maybe even many people
many times! Keep the faith, guys.

I am sorry for the personal attack on Nitika. To her, I want to publicly
apologise. I know her to be hard-working, diligent, honest, competent and
an all-round professional. She's new and she's learning and has and will
make mistakes - like all of us do. It is fantastic to have her on the
 team. Period.

The program is a pilot - and we made a ton of mistakes. Sorry, let me
rephrase that. I led the initiative so all responsibility should be mine.
I made a ton of mistakes. I promise the following. We will have a
thorough, honest and fact based evaluation. We will be open to make all
the changes that are required. We will not let the events of the past few
days force us into a bunker mentality. We will be open and we will be
intellectually rigorous. We will learn and we will improve. The India
opportunity is massive - and our ambitions are huge. It is also fraught
with challenges. Unless we try and do things - new and tough and complex
things - we will never be able to realise our true potential.

I know that some who have participated in these exchanges are driven by an
awe-inspiring love and passion for Wikipedia. I urge you to continue to
come forward and work with others and us. Come forward early though - and
stay engaged through the journey. It will have ups and downs.

On communication, I urge everyone to maintain WP:CIVILITY and WP:NPOV in
all our interactions. On this - and to be fair - quite a few other
interactions recently on totally unrelated topics (and involving a whole
host of others), I daresay we have drifted from core Wikipedia principles.
These should apply to us to all our community's interactions as
religiously as we apply them to our projects.

I would urge folks who agree with me to write back. Even a +1 will do.
Let's hear the voices of the quieter folks. Let's hear from the folks who
don't always get involved in mailing list exchanges out of either
apprehension or apathy. Let's move forward.

 Warm Regards,

 hisham

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Few concerns

2013-10-04 Thread Moksh Juneja
A question came up on this list about some employer-employee relationships
within the chapter board. This is to clarify that the stated relationships
between the said persons have ended/in the process of ending with notice
being served prior to this issue being brought up (certainly not because of
this email and prior to it).

This is not to brag but to state background. I would like to further state
in particular have been extremely generous in supporting Wikipedia
activities in Mumbai for several years now, organising local events,
offering my office for meetups and official purposes, bearing expenses in
some cases, offering pro-bono services through my company and even offering
jobs to several Wikipedians.

Pranav and I were two people instrumental in ensuring the success of our
first national conference 2 years ago. This is something that is yet to be
replicated. Pranav was recently instrumental in our first victory with the
government recently, a major win for the chapter in India to have them
apply a Wikipedia complaint license to open knowledge resources for the
first time ever. Karthik has been one of the lead organisers of the
chapters biggest photo contest, our biggest success of the last financial
year. All of us have been an integral part of several chapter activities
during the last year. In the recent weeks, both Pranav and Karthik have
been involved in preparing our FDC application, spending several hours a
week, into the wee hours of the night on a regular basis apart from
juggling their professional commitments during the day. All of us have been
actively involved in the Wikimedia Conference bid.

All of us were Wikipedians first before anything else, meeting each other
through Wikipedia, having our own independent thinking which remains
unaffected and one common goal as unpaid volunteers working out of love for
the movement as a cause. We assure everyone that there is no COI that may
affect any of our functioning in the EC and performing our duties at the
chapter.

One thing we have learnt from this is that there is a need for a formal
public document that details what COI is and when disclosures need to be
made. We will push for such a document to be created within the EC. At the
same time, we humbly appeal that the community assume good faith towards
our efforts and help/support the chapter and movement in India. We are
working towards building greater synergies, understanding and team-building
within the EC leadership, SIG Chairs and key members of the chapter and
volunteers in India in an effort to strengthen our very foundations with a
long term view and we cannot do this without your help and support.

 http://www.facebook.com/events/181325168737101

*Basic idea behind this session*: A crucial problem with several
Wikipedia articles on sexual violence, especially in the Indian context, is
that often there are no articles or that articles have been deleted). It
would be a knowledge advocacy session to increase gender sensitive editing
 in Wikipedia.

The session will involve editing of articles pertaining to various aspects
of violence against women in India. A list of about 10 Wikipedia articles
has been drawn up for editing. The session will be live-blogged. Remote
participation will be enabled through IRC channels.

The edit-a-thon is a part of the 16 days of activism against gender based
violence starting 25th November (International Day for the Elimination of
Violence against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day).
This is a global campaign that aims at raising awareness about gender-based
violence as a human rights issue. This hackathon will be mainly focussed
towards data visualisation and several organisations are providing us with
statistical datasets and other kinds of data including audio and video.

competitions that enrich their contents including but not limited to proof
-reading and digitization. Being a part of it, Wikisource's Malayalam
version - Wiki Grandhasala community, a voluntary unit engaged in

various Government as well as Non-Government establishments and other
voluntary organisations with similar interests like Kerala Sahithya
Academy, IT@ school Project, Swathanthra Malayalam Computing and Center
for Internet and Society (CIS-A2K) under the banner of Malayalam Wiki
community.. This digitisation competition is being conducted as a part of
an effort that collects Malayalam Books whose copyright date has expired in
digital form (in unicode format) preserving the content and makig them more
accessible and popular. The competition lasts for a month, starting on
January 1, 2014 and ending on Jan 31, 2014. The competition focuses
especially individuals and schools and includes some attractive prizes
including E-book readers, Tablets and selected books for those who lead
the scoreboard. In this competition, books that was recently released by

2014. Here are the pages which are to be typed in as part of this
 competition.

We are organizing a Women Scientists edit-a-thon tomorrow and day after.
Join us by editing as many articles as possible during these the two

Apart from creating articles, you could also help us by correcting or
expanding existing ones. Adding names to the existing list of scientists
would go a long way too.

What criteria (relative academic accomplishments) is being used for
 qualifying as a women scientist?
Some days ago, I saw some entries for fresh people with a couple of
publications (it was part of an earlier round of editing).
One cannot really go by the few awards (politicized) and such.

If that is the criteria, then I know at least 95 women who would fit
in. If I set the cut off point at 5 years in research, then the number
 would be 60 - 72+ (I am not sure ).

If the criteria is 100pp of publication in refereed international
journals or 10 years in research or some high impact work (requires
peer review), then the number would be much less.

ps. I don't want an article on myself as I have enough publicity :)

 Best

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Declining contributions across Indian Wikipedias

2014-07-29 Thread Moksh Juneja
In my suggestion/ recommendation we need to create vertical projects within
wiki-projects. It could be Indian space Environment, local destinations in
your city, etc. With this we should tap into colleges, schools and the
senior editors can look into inspiring the new and junior editors.

I am saying this in my personal capacity as a contributor to Wikipedia.

[Wikimediaindia-l] My resignation as President and EC member of Wikimedia India chapter

2014-08-27 Thread Moksh Juneja
Dear all,

It's with a heavy heart that I would like to announce my resignation from
as the President and Executive Committee of the Wikimedia India Chapter
with immediate effect. With this, my respect for all of your contributions
to the Movement has only increased, knowing about all the sweat and blood
that goes into the creation of the community that defines the Movement as
we know it, today.

The reasons for my silence on the public list are for the same reasons that
I am quitting today. They are personal. As a Person grows, the
responsibility also grows and a point comes where the personal becomes more
important than the public.

I've had a hard time balancing work, life and my interests. In the
balancing act, it is my family that has missed out the most, especially now
that I have become a father of a 3 month old girl. The demands on me have
grown and I find that I can no longer contribute usefully to the Movement
or that someone else can do more justice to the role.

I thank you all for your love, help and support. I hope to keep
contributing to the Movement when I can.
