Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Philosophical view on Google translated articles

2010-04-20 Thread Ramesh N G
I have tried the google translator to translate some en article into
Malayalam. around 5, 6.

The difficulty which I felt was the word to word translation. We have
a difference in style. Though we translate content of lot en wiki
articles to ML, we dont do it as a word by word. we need to change the
sentence, or sometimes the entire explanation in the way we write the
ml articles.
I left that option of google translator for ml wiki now.

 Ravi,

Here is my view on your questions.

However, a majority of the Tamil Wiki community is showing stiff
 resistance for this operation.

I too support them :). Word-to-word translation is not good from the reader
point of view. It may kill the project also.

 1. Is Paid editing against Wikipedia principles or spirit?

 Yes, according to me.

 2.  Besides the article count etc., Wiki is first of all a vibrant and
healthy community of like minded individuals interacting on a friendly note.
This is very important in a small community especially. But this operation
creates a divide like regular Wikipedians Vs Google Translators. User -
User interaction has changed to User - Google - Translation team
coordinator  interaction. From friendly reminders we have reached a
 complaining stage.

Is this good for the community in the long run?

No it is not good for the community or for wiki.

 3. Who benefits more from this operation? Google or Wiki? Even if it is
assumed that it will serve the language ultimately, who has the control in
this operation? Of course, the Wiki communities have the control but they
 haven't exercised yet.

This can hardly be considered partnership or collaboration. Google has not
been transparent on this so far.

Of course. Google will benefit more.  Wiki will get many artificial
word-to-word translated articles from which the readers will run away.
Google will enhance their English to Tamil translator tool through this
 exercise.

 4. Wikipedia is a volunteer project and Wikipedians contribute out of free
will. Is this free will ensured for the Google Translators? (choice of
articles, translation style, work load, tool for translation etc.,)

No. since they are translating articles for money. And wikipedians will not
have time to go through each and every word that they translate. I think
Tamil wikipedians need to concentrate more on tamil wikipedia article
contest now. So who will review the Google translated  articles.

 5. Use of Google translation kit is not wrong per se. But the Kit is
partly responsible for many of the issues. Is it right to continue using
this without cleaning up existing articles?

I am against any type of word to word translation of English Wiki articles
to any other language. We have tried this Malayalam Wikipedia 3 years
before. We discontinued that since we found that exercise is creating
artificial articles which is not good from the reader point of view.

 6. Not all en wiki articles are the best. Some have factual errors and
some have bias. Especially, articles on culture, politics etc., Is it good
to translate them as it is? A paid translator can hardly be expected or
 allowed to correct them.

 Your concern is true.

 7. Style of English and Style of Indian languages are quite different.
Since the translation is done through the kit, we can see literal
translations resulting in a dry or artificial style in the local language.
This can harm the nature of the local language in long run. Translation is
OK but not everywhere and as it is.

True. I already mentioned this above.

 8. IS THE WIKIMEDIA FOUNDATION AWARE OF THIS OPERATION ? WHAT IS ITS VIEW?
Its view need not be binding on the local community. Nevertheless it will be
 interesting to know.

It is the local wiki community to decide about this.

 9. WHY HASN'T GOOGLE ANNOUNCED ABOUT THIS PROJECT OPENLY YET? Google has
emphasized many times that it doesn't create information but only organizes
it. Whenever it showed hints of creating information, it was highly noted
with concern. This operation is a clear move towards information creation.

Since they are not sure whether this project will happen.

On the outset, this looks like a good gesture from Google to Indian
language Wikis. But it should also be noted in the context Google and
Wikmedia are both powerful entities in the Internet and one's effect on
 another should be watched.

Google's only aim is to enhance their English- Indian language translator
tools. All other discussions are the ways to achieve that aim.

 https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IFphBpq14eMUjoBcy0wk-WWQNTQ5vxpq_o285DyrqvU/edit?hl=en
   for
survey report. Here is the Summary for that

*Why did we do that survey?*

As we know there are lots of Indic wiki projects having different number of
active users and article. However we simply differentiate them on behalf of
number of articles or depth but that cannot give us an actual overall growth
of that project because many projects are simply bot generated as we know
about Nepal bhasha and Bishnupriya Manipuri Wikipedia. Simply a project
growth can be measured from its article quality and number of articles both.
A project having large no of articles having good quality of article has
 grown faster.

*How did we measure quality of a wiki project?*

Quality of a wiki project is simply depends upon how many articles are
developed from their stubs root. Generally each article is started from a
stub. Now quality of the article mainly depends upon how much time it has
been edited and how many words are in it or how many long the article is? So
we choose different factor which directly affects the quality of article.
 These are-

 1) *Nr. of good articles (Articles having size2 KB)*

Simply a project having more articles of size 2 KB has grown much in
comparison to another. But this alone cannot decide quality of a project
that’s why we included some another factors. We simply took the percentage
of articles having size greater than 2 KB. We gave a marking scale of 150 to
 this.

 2) *Nr. of Average articles (Articles having size0.5 KB)*

Simply to filter the stubs we choose this criteria, we gave marking scale
of 100 to this just less than above because article having size greater than
2 KB reflects much growth in comparison to 0.5 KB article.

 3) *Average number of words in an article*

That was too tricky to calculate but we simply divided total number of
words in a project by total nr. of articles in it for a rough estimate. To
keep this in the marking scale of 100 we simply multiplied the output value
 by 0.1 In our formula.

 4) *Avg. size of article (KB)*

That was also tricky to calculate but we simply divided total size of a
project by total nr. of articles in it for a rough estimate. To keep this in
the marking scale of 100 we simply multiplied the output value by 10 In our
 formula.

 5) *Main space edit per total nr. Of articles*

That was also an important factor to know how frequently an article is
being edited for being updated. Output value was already on a scale of 100
so we did not multiply of divided that value.

 6) *Total Edits/article*

This is also an Important factor because it reflects how much extra edits
(that includes categorization, image uploads and some other similar factors)
are being performed in a wiki project. As Output value was already on a
scale of 100 so we did not multiply of divided that value.

 7) *Bot edits*

That was the most important factor because all the factor that we discussed
can be gained at high value by running bots like in Nepal bhasha and
Bishnupriya Manipuri Wikipedia. So we simply multiplied the overall score by
percentage non bot edits. However bots edits in some extant are also a
necessary part. So we just set the 50% bot edits as a cut off mark. For A
wiki having more than 50% of bot edits we simply multiplied total score by
(100-(bot edits if larger than 50%-50))

*Formula for Quality factor = (R*0.1+Q*10+E+F*1.5+P+O)*(100-N)/100*

*R- Average number of words in an article*

*Q- Avg. size of article (KB)*

 *E- Article greater than 2kb*

 *F-* *Article greater than 0.5kb*

 *P-* *Total Edits/article*

*O-* *Mainspace edit per total nr. Of articles*

*N-* *Share of Bot edits (%)*

 * *

*Overall Score = Number of articles * Quality factor*

 * *

 * *

 **

 *Thank you and Regards*

Not a good idea unless few language communities (at least 6-7) are ready
for the selection, proof reading, verifying image licenses, and so on.
Selection and creation of offline content is not at all a small task. Much
effort is required for it. Also from each language community the support of
at least 10 active contributors are required. As of now not many Indic
language communities are ready for it. Also the exclusion of selected
articles from inactive wikis is not a good idea when we are trying for
 public outreach.

Another possible and easiest option would be releasing a Commons CD/DVD
that contains copyleft images related to India. Malayalam wikimedians
already done a test release of Commons images along with the Wikisource CD.
The release of such a CD/DVD can be done with less effort.

Subject: [Wikimediaindia-l] Updating the logo of Indian Language
 Wikipedias
To: Discussion list on Indian language projects of Wikimedia.
 wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org

 Dear Indic language wikipedians,

As many of you know the default skin of wikipedias (including that of all
Indic language wikipedias) is moved to the new Vector skin some time back.
Please see the below mail that I sent to this list regrading this on *2010
 July 1*.

As some of you know, along with this update, the logo of wikipedia is also
updated. The current logo is available
 herehttp://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia/2.0.

But even though almost 6 months had passed after this major update, only
 Bengali http://bn.wikipedia.org, Malayalam http://ml.wikipedia.org,
Urdu http://ur.wikipedia.org, and Telugu http://te.wikipedia.org wiki
communities had took initiatives to update the logo. The logo update is
still pending for the following Indian language wikis.

- Assamese - http://as.wikipedia.org
- Bhojpuri - http://bh.wikipedia.org
- Bishnupriya Manipuri - http://bpy.wikipedia.org/
- Divehi - http://dv.wikipedia.org
- Gujarati - http://gu.wikipedia.org
- Hindi - http://hi.wikipedia.org
- Kannada - http://kn.wikipedia.org/
- Kashmiri - http://ks.wikipedia.org/
- Marathi - http://mr.wikipedia.org
- Nepali - http://ne.wikipedia.org
- Oriya - http://or.wikipedia.org
- Pali - http://pi.wikipedia.org
- Punjabi - http://pa.wikipedia.org
- Sanskrit - http://sa.wikipedia.org
- Sindhi - http://sd.wikipedia.org
- Tamil - http://ta.wikipedia.org

 Carry Bass (User:Bastiquehttp://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Bastique)
has took initiative to create the new logo for some of the Indian language
wikis. But for languages like Kannada, Oriya, and so on even that is
pending. Even if the new logo is created a bug needs to be filed by the
respective wiki community to change the logo. So for most of the Indian
wikis both these tasks are pending now.

I request the respective language communities to take initiatives to
create the new logo and file a bug for this update. The guidelines for
creating the new logo is listed at
 http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Wikimedia_official_marks/Word_mark_creation

Please write to me if any of the language communities require any type of
 support regarding this.

 Regards
 Shiju Alex

limited number of such scholarships, and it is also possible to apply for

 Dear All,

Today I am sharing you the summary of discussions I had with Odia wiki (
http://or.wikipedia.org/) community. It is available here:
 http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_-_India_Programs/Indic_Languages/Odia/Discussions/2011

Odia is a shining example of how a wiki project can be revived and build a
community around it, if few wonderful users with a vision for building free
knowledge in their mother language arrive in their mother language wiki.

Odia wikipedia was started in 2002. In fact it is one of the first Indic
language wikipedia. Nothing much had happened in Odia wiki till 2010
December. But the progress made by Odia wiki project (
http://or.wikipedia.org/) during the past one year is note worthy and it
is an example that can be replicated in some of the inactive Indic language
wikipedias. Odia was having just 600 articles (which were created over the
past 8 years) and no active users at the start of this year. Now 10 months
later, it has close to 1600 articles and 10 active users. The online and
offline outreach initiatives took by Odia wiki community for building the
 community is showing positive result.

I was actively involved in the community building for Odia wikipedia. I
still remember the day (2011 January 15) when I introducted Odia wikipedia
and Odia tying tool (developed by Junaid) to an Odia speaker (Ashuthosh
Kar) during Wiki X celebration at Bangalore. Through him very soon we got a
wonderful wikipedian (Subhashish) who is leading the efforts for Odia wiki
now. Initially Subhasish and I used to meet at my home and work on the
basic things for Odia wiki. I remember us working on the Odia wikipedia
logo, FAQ booklet, Translate wiki, and so on. Soon Odia got more members to
the team through the few Odia wiki workshops happened at Bangalore. Along
with workshops, Odia wikipedians translated the FAQ booklet to Odia and
took efforts to integrate the Odia typing solution to Odia wikipedia. Later
with the support of Dhanada Mishra (the chairman of Human Development
Foundation (http://www.hdf.org.in/)) and a young student Odia wikipedian
Srikanth Kedia a wiki workshop is conducted at Bhubaneshwar. Odia
wikipedians from Bangalore are doing an excellent job and now many of them
are participating in Wikimedia India chapter activities also.

Odia wiki community is effectively making use of various social networking
sites to reach out to Odia speakers.

Odia wiki project picked up not because Odia has got huge speaker base,
 high literacy among Odia speakers, access to computers, or any thing else;
it become active only because it has receieved the right volunteers who
have passion and vision of developing a wikipedia in their mother language.
We need similar volunteers for each Indic language wikipedia.

2012-03-01 Thread Ramesh N G
I think thats a good initiative. ... I would love to see something like
this happen

On Mar 1, 2012 8:59 PM, Nitika ntan...@wikimedia.org wrote:

 Hey Everyone,

There are over 500 people on this mailing list - but I know quite a few
folks who might not be too comfortable editing Wikipedia.

I'm organising something where we can try and solve that - all while you
are sitting in your cozy home corners and sipping on a hot cup of chai.
Simply put, it's a virtual outreach session.

Here's how it will work. It will run for 3 hours on a Sunday afternoon.
It will be conducted as a Google+ Hangout. (If you are not familiar, this
is a feature that allows for free video conferencing.) It will be a
combination of a presentation, hands-on editing session and an open house
 to get queries solved.

 Agenda of the event
 1. Introduction to Wikipedia
 2. Overview of Core Wikipedia Policies, etc. (Neutral Point of View,
Referencing, Notability, Writing Style, Avoiding CopyVio, Courtesy,
 Controlling Vandalism, etc.)
 3. Basic Editing (creating user accounts user pages, understanding talk
pages, adding content references, inserting links, using Wiki markups,
 etc.)
 4. Community Citizenship (Understanding how we communicate with each other
on Wikipedia and the protocols for this.)
 5. QA Next Steps (Discuss what your first edits after the session might
be: what kind of article? what kind of edit?)

Medium of the event: Google+ Hangout.
It is free and there's nothing to install. Do make sure you check your
mic and speakers beforehand (and the screen also asks you to check your
hair!) It allows everyone to see each other's video - making it a more
human experience. Also, we'll be able to view each other's screens which
will make it simpler to conduct this session. We can have a max of 10
people doing a hangout at any point in time. In case we have more than 10
interested participants, we will organize multiple sessions.

Proposed date and time: 11th March, 3pm to 6pm.

Participants/Volunteers/Facilitators: Do drop me an email at
nit...@wikimedia.org. Also, if you are an experienced editor and
interested in conducting the event, drop me an email. I'll then send you
details of how this event wil be conducted.

Do share this with anyone you know who might not be on this list but might
 be interested (friends, family, whoever!)

 Thanks
 Nitika

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Experimenting with Virtual Outreach

Great idea..

Wat abt making it for all indic language?
On Mar 1, 2012 8:58 PM, Nitika ntan...@wikimedia.org wrote:

 Hi Folks,

I was thinking of experimenting conducting online outreach. I want to try
out if we can do an effective outreach event using a google+ (video)
hangout. Virtual outreach has a number of advantages:

 * No investment of time/effort/cost in travel
 * Personal attention to each participant (because of individual
 video/screenshare facilities.)
 * No complications of no laptops available at the venue or a limit on
creating user names from a single IP address during the event
 * Lower dependency on institutions/college fests to organize an event for
 us.
 * Not limited by physical presence. Sitting in Kanyakumari, one can
conduct outreach for interested folks in Kashmir!

This is just a trial to test if online outreach is effective, doable and
manageable. This could be one of the ways forward! (Potentially, we could
have more community members doing more events with a more diverse audience.)

 I'm really excited. Fingers crossed!

 Thanks

What if the malware specifically look for wikipedia browsing? From the user

any other sites but wikipedia.

Hmmm...that maybe true but what else can we do, I mean, Inkfruit has to be

For people who face these ads, are the ads appearing only on wikipedia or
other websites also? If I am not wrong, if this is the work of a malware,
it would display the ad on each and every website you visit and not just
specifically Wikipedia. If its only Wikipedia and the ad is only Inkfruit,
I'd really say, if nothing can be done via code, legal needs to be
involved. If its a non-specific malware, just clean your systems, I guess
 and inform others.

Rather, I'd say, instead of not going public with this, if it gets too
frequent, go public. Display a banner on top of Wiki stating that if you
see ads on Wikipedia that is not at all related to Wiki, rather you should
check your system for malware. The point is people should not assume, that
 Wikipedia has started ads.

 Hi all,

Tamil Wikipedia crossed 50,000 article milestone on December 18th, 2012.

The first 1000 articles took 1 year and 11 months.

The last 25,000 articles were created in just 2 years and 2 months !

You can find the growth captured in the graph at

 http://ta.wikipedia.org/s/3ys

During the last few months, we focused on clean up, improving article
quality and creating most important articles listed at

That is a very challenging thought, Arjuna. Online surveys are
potentially quite weak, as evidenced by the Facebook voting process (for
policy changes, not the Facebook 'like' feature, whose purpose itself is
 full of questions).

A possibility may be a continuous rating system, with radio buttons on
each page, visible to logged in users (?), or actionable only by logged in
users, rather than an optionable survey on some other page. I see
difficulties with this as well, mind you, but throw it out as a suggestion.

On the plus side, adding such user-involving features may be a way to
bring in more 'mature' community involvement in knowledge creation and
dissemination. I am often struck by the manner in which some relatively
half-baked 'improvement' gets to be quite popular while worthwhile
technology lies unused. 'The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But
in ourselves, that we are underlings', said the poet, but I hope we are
part of the solution, not content to remain the problem.

 Article feedback
 toolhttp://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/12/20/article-feedback-new-research-and-next-steps/currently
in beta could be the impact metric that may be suitable for this
 purpose.

Somewhere in the future, I see some kind of 'sharing' as a possibility,
whereby individuals who have common interests can actively and dynamically
connect through wikipedia pages. That might throw up an interesting metric
 as well.

I understand that part of the plans for Wikipedia is to make it more
 social.

 Cheers
 Arjuna

*Times of India : Wikipedia boom in Marathi, Malayalam and other desi

 http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/tech-news/internet/Wikipedia-boom-in-Marathi-Malayalam-and-other-desi-languages/articleshow/21518534.cms

*A vibrant vernacular Wikipedia seems to be taking root in India. In the
last eight months, the number of Wikipedia entries has grown substantially
in 20 Indian languages, says a study by the Bangalore-based Centre for
 Internet and Society (CIS).

Wiki, the world's largest online encyclopaedia where anyone can write and
edit articles, didn't have much content in vernacular till a few years ago.
According to the study, Wikis in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi have
added thousands of new articles on various subjects from September 2012 to
April 2013. A few of these pages were viewed more during this period.
Marathi, which had 30 lakh page views per month previously, had another 10
lakh visitors, while Bengali Wikipedia had 14 lakh page views.

While Malayalam Wiki took the top position with an enviable team of 100
plus editors, the number Hindi, Marathi and Sanskrit editors came down.
Marathi has 40,000 articles. But most editors in Mumbai prefer to work on
English. Pune has more Marathi editors,' says T Vishnu Vardhan, programme
director, Access to Knowledge project at CIS.

In the last two years, the demand for knowledge in Indian languages has
grown as we have moved to the motto of 'roti, kapda and internet', says
 Vardhan.

One of the reasons for growth is that many browsers now support Indian
language scripts. But this was not the case in early 2000. Though many
wanted to read and type in their own language, there was no browser
support, says Shiju Alex, blogger and Malayalam Wiki editor. Moreover,
many didn't know how to type in their mother tongues.

But once Indian languages were encoded in Unicode, the fonts became
accessible. There was no need to write Malayalam in English and people
started blogging in their mother tongues, says Alex. According to Vardhan,
communities with better literacy rates seem to have taken the lead online.

Telugu Wiki is stronger as internet penetration in Andhra Pradesh is
higher than in places where Bhojpuri or Assamese is spoken.

As with most online language initiatives, the Wiki movement was also
fuelled by the diaspora. Tinu Cherian Abraham, a former board member of
the Wikimedia India chapter, talks about how an NRI's love for Malayalam
 kick-started the project.

But now there are many Wiki foot soldiers in India, including a blind
editor of Hindi Wikipedia and an elderly contributor from Kerala whose
passion for free knowledge has helped him forget his ailments. *
