Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Fw: [Wikimania-l] Reminder: Wikimania 2014 scholarship deadline 17 February
Hi Harry, I can confirm Wikimedia UK will run a separate process closer to Wikimania. Any one from the UK who has already made an application through the Wikimedia Foundation scholarship process and has agreed to share [their] information with chapters and thematic organizations for purpose of selecting and awarding scholarships will *not* need to make another application. Anyone else can wait until Wikimedia UK own application are open. What do UK (in particular non-London) residents who want financial support to attend do? Is there going to be a separate process or do we need to apply for a scholarship through the WMF (which would be a bit silly imho)? I'm sure it would be useful to know before the scholarships deadline. Only a single type of scholarship will be available from the Wikimedia Foundation for Wikimania 2014. A Wikimedia Foundation scholarship will cover the cost of an individual's round-trip travel costs as arranged by the Wikimedia Foundation travel agency, shared accommodation as arranged by the Wikimedia Foundation, and registration for Wikimania. Applicants will be rated using a pre-determined selection process and selection criteria by the Scholarship Committee, who will determine which are successful. Or on a more Winter Olympics themed note, and as castles are usually atop hills, why not build indoor skiing/snowboarding centres, complete with real snow (basically giant freezers at -5C, with water sprayed upwards every night from snow cannons to create the snow). There are six in the UK: http://www.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/infoandadvice/uksnowsports/ukslopesmap.aspx I like the idea of the Lake District Ski Club (real snow, wind etc permitting), where you have to walk for an hour just to reach the lift: http://www.ldscsnowski.co.uk/ best wishes Edward Hands That's because Castles are an outdated concept.
