I'd agree that "short, simple guide" isn't really a brief here: more a hope for

As necessary for what? Outside of a few textbook and journal
publishers its not as if there are many people who oppose the concept.

You want to see how open access journals are used on wikipedia?

It's not so much a specific form of words, but we need to be sure that the
donor understands what they're doing. There is a standard template that
they can copy/paste and fill in the blanks and send off to OTRS. Feel free
to ping me if you want me to did the email out of the queue.

 Hi all,

Sorry if this is something I really ought to know :/

Is there a standard form of words - either from OTRS wiki or that you
have used - that is helpful when you are contacting organisations or
individuals to ask for image donations?

Context: I would like to contact artists to ask if they have image
shots they would be prepared to donate to commons to support creation of
 articles about them.

Problem: I need to be able to say a) What the benefit of donating the
image is to them and to us b) what the consequences of CC-BY-SA donation
are in terms of that images use for a non expert.

Also it would help if anyone can share the easiest process for managing
uploading when you don't hold the copyright but the image donor does (but
 they are a non-expert/non editor)

 Thank you!

There would be more than one "Wikimedia" perspective:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:2016_Strategy/Knowledge suggests the number
could run into three figures!

My own take, I suppose, is that a handbook or manual covering "open knowledge"
is more of a rarity than advocacy for its merits. Which is rather cart before

Depends - if you're approaching an individual, I've always had more success
pushing the "donate your images for the good of everyone" line - which
you'll be good at because you're a fundraiser - you probably have better

If it's an institution it's more complex. John Cummings is a good person to
talk to about it. The OTRS permission email can be a stumbling block
because OTRS demand a specific wording and due to the volume of emails they
get they can seem a bit unhelpful at times (they're so busy, it's

 which
do a good job of explaining the implications of a CC-BY-SA licence but from

Hello all!

Hope this email finds you well. Just to let you know that we've got an Art
+ Feminism editathon coming up on Saturday 5th March at the Portrait
Gallery in Edinburgh - be great to see some of you there. Let me or the
galleries know if you can attend - contact details on the event page.

It's a follow-up event to the Modern Scottish Women editathon we did in
January - fantastic opportunity to get some missing women onto Wikipedia...

Open Knowledge, Open Data Institute, Creative Commons have lots of this
kind of stuff, e.g. http://opendatahandbook.org/

This is good too: https://exposingtheinvisible.org/guides/decoding-data/

Who do you see as the audience for this guide you're proposing?

[Wikimediauk-l] Collating/editing information about the benefits of open knowledge

2016-02-23 Thread Lucy Crompton-Reid
Hi all

WMUK would like to provide better materials aimed at the general public
which explain the benefits of open knowledge. I have already been
signposted to some existing resources (provided by other organisations) but
if you know of any really good materials on this, please let me know.

Also, if anyone would like to take on the task of writing a short, simple
guide to open knowledge from a Wikimedia perspective, please let me know!
This will go on our website but will also be a document that we can email
to people as necessary.

Thanks
Lucy
