[Wikimediauk-l] Universal Code of Conduct - feedback on enforcement guidelines

2021-08-24 Thread Daria Cybulska
*TLDR:*
The Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC)
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Universal_Code_of_Conduct> needs a
mechanism to ensure it's being maintained in various communities. A
committee has created a proposal for enforcement guidelines, and is looking
for feedback. This can be done on the draft review talk page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Universal_Code_of_Conduct/Enforcement_draft_guidelines_review>,
but there are also live events to share your thoughts:

   - Conversation hours

<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Universal_Code_of_Conduct/2021_consultations/Roundtable_discussions#Conversation_hours>
-
   24 August (today), 31 August, 7 September @ 03:00 UTC & 14:00 UTC
   - Roundtable calls

-
   18 September @ 03:00 UTC & 15:00 UTC

Wikimedia UK will have some role in upholding UCoC, so your feedback is
very welcome!

*More information:*
Dear all,

I'm sharing the following update from the Wikimedia Foundation. Any
questions feel free to let me know! :

for
the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC)
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Universal_Code_of_Conduct>. This review
period started on the 17 August 2021.

Community and staff members collaborated to develop these draft guidelines
based on consultations, discussions, and research
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Universal_Code_of_Conduct/Discussions>.
These guidelines are not final but you can help move the progress forward.
Provide comments about these guidelines by 17 October 2021. The committee
will be revising the guidelines based upon community input.

Everyone may share comments in a number of places. Facilitators welcome
comments in any language on the draft review talk page

or
by email. Comments can also be shared on talk pages of translations, at
local discussions, or during round-table discussions and conversation hours.

There are planned live discussions about the UCoC enforcement draft
guidelines:

The facilitation team supporting this review period hopes to reach a large
number of communities. Having a shared understanding is important. If you
do not see a conversation happening in your community, please organize a
discussion. Facilitators can assist you in setting up the conversations.

Discussions will be summarized and presented to the drafting committee
every two weeks. The summaries will be published here

[Wikimediauk-l] Opportunity to become a Wikimedia UK trainer - Edinburgh 4-5th July

2017-06-07 Thread Daria Cybulska
Would you like to take a leading role as a trainer in the Wikimedia
movement?

On 4-5th July in Edinburgh we are running another session of our
established Train the Trainer course. The event is open to anyone who can
make a credible commitment to support Wikimedia UK training in future. We
are particularly keen to hear from people based outside of London and are
interested in supporting our training and editing events.

The workshop will be a chance to:
- Get accredited and receive detailed feedback about your presenting and
training skills
- Get general trainer skills which you can then apply when delivering
specific Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons workshops etc.
- Share your skills with others
- Develop the ability to help design a training programme that serves
Wikimedia UK in the long term

If you'd like to be involved, please register your interest here:
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Training_the_Trainers/July_2017_event

We will also be running a network event for all our Train the Trainer
'alumni' on 15th July in London.

[Wikimediauk-l] WMUK scholarships to Wikimania 2016 - announcement!

2016-03-24 Thread Daria Cybulska
Wikimedia UK is offering a small number of scholarships to support our
community members to attend and contribute to Wikimania 2016 in Esino
Lario.

There are three scholarships of €500. A scholarship covers the €350
registration option (which includes accommodation for four days and travel
to the conference from the airport in Italy), and travel to the conference
from the UK for up to €150. We hope that this will enable the scholarship
recipients to participate in the heart of the conference.

Volunteer activity within the UK Wikimedia movement is the main criteria of
eligibility. Volunteers who applied for the WMF scholarship but were
unsuccessful can also apply. We will prioritise applicants who would not be
able to fund their attendance themselves.

The deadline for applying is 8th April and we aim to let you know by 15th
April (Wikimania registration runs until 15th May).

Please fill the form below to be considered for the scholarship.

[Wikimediauk-l] OER16 (open educational resources) Registration and Early Bird Discount

2016-02-04 Thread Daria Cybulska
Dear all,

Registration is now open for the OER16 Open Culture Conference
<https://oer16.oerconf.org/> at the University of Edinburgh, and an ‘early
bird’ discount is available until 6 March. I'm circulating the news as
we're collaborating with the University of Edinburgh and were encouraged to
promote the event.

The early bird rate is £250 for the full 2 day conference including the
Gala Dinner on Tuesday, 19 April. Limited places for one day attendance are
available, although we encourage delegates to register for the full event
whenever possible. Single day attendance does not include the Gala Dinner
and costs £160. No early bird discount is available for single days.

OER16 will take place on 19th & 20th April 2016 at the University of
Edinburgh. The conference will be chaired by Melissa Highton, Director of
Learning, Teaching and Web Services at the University of Edinburgh, and
Lorna Campbell, OER Liaison at the University of Edinburgh and EDINA
Digital Education Manager.

OER16 will focus on:
• The strategic advantage of open and creating a culture of openness.
• Converging and competing cultures of open knowledge, open source, open
content, open practice, open data and open access.
• Hacking, making and sharing.
• The reputational challenges of openwashing.
• Openness and public engagement.
• Innovative approaches to opening up cultural heritage collections for
education.

Keynotes speakers are Catherine Cronin, Jim Groom, Melissa Highton, John
Scally and Emma Smith.

To book please visit: http://go.alt.ac.uk/OER16-Registration.

I was asked by our colleagues at Wikimedia Netherlands to spread the word
about a storyboard writing workshop they are running on March 19th in
Utrecht. It would be run in English.

If anyone finds themselves in the Netherlands at the time, it may be an
interesting event to join. The workshop itself is free, but we do not have
scholarships for travelcosts etc.

You can find information about the workshop here:

[Wikimediauk-l] Fwd: Contributing to articles on Wikipedia using materials at National Fairground Archive

2015-09-28 Thread Daria Cybulska
Hi all,

Have a look at the message from Rosa below - she's looking for some advice
on contributing to Wikipedia relating to collections she is representing.
If anyone is in the area and/or is interested in helping our, feel free to
get in touch! It sounds like she's already done a fair amount of research,
so may only need a bit of support.

All the best,

Dear GLAM UK,

I am a member of staff in the Library at the University of Sheffield. The
National Fairground Archive is based within the Library and we are
interested in using our subject knowledge and collections to contribute to
Wikipedia articles relating to this area. We understand the policy about
not contributing original research and would not be doing this.

I have looked at your pages on Wikipedia and have seen the information
about Wikipedia projects and Wikimedians in residence and I want to ask: is
it a requirement that we be part of a project with a pre-existing
Wikimedian or is it ok for members of staff here to become editors and make
contributions independently? Would this be seen as a conflict of interest?

We would, of course, be using individual accounts and obeying the
guidelines for editors. Our aim in contributing would be to make
information about this area more available to the public by adding to

 Hi Rod,

Sorry I am not around on Wednesday, but happy to give some remote support

One limitation you will probably hit is the number of Accounts that can be
created on one IP address in one day. You can reduce that risk by having
multiple IPs, by asking attendees to create an account in advance or by
creating accounts for them. I would be happy to give either you or Andy the
Account creator right if you want it, that isn't as newbie friendly as
being able to create accounts themselves, but it bypasses that throttle.

The other throttles I can help with are that newbies are liable to face a
capcha when they try to add links, and if you structure your workshop in
such a way that you get to say all hit enter now you will find that six
newbies successfully edit and the rest get their edit throttled. Both can
be mitigated by setting participants as confirmed users - email me any
user names you learn in advance and I can sort that out for you.

[Wikimediauk-l] Volunteering opportunity - Diversity events

2014-07-25 Thread Daria Cybulska
Dear all,

* One of Wikimedia UK's aims is to teach underrepresented groups how to
edit Wikipedia and develop underrepresented content (e.g. Women in
Science). Wikimedia UK has been running 'Women in Science' editathons for
several years. In 2013 our editathons
http://www.centenary.mrc.ac.uk/events/mrcroyal-societywikimedia-uk-women-in-science-wikipedia-edit-a-thons/
received extremely positive responses from the attendees and in general.
The events were delivered in partnerships with other organisations who host
them and invite people from their networks to attend. They are also made
possible thanks to support of volunteer trainers. During 2013 we have been
getting many more enquiries that we were able to assist with, and would now
like to explore these opportunities. *
*We are now looking for a volunteer who would be interested in supporting
organisation and delivery of 2014 Women in Science events (possibly to link
with Ada Lovelace celebrations in October). This would suit someone
sympathetic to the issues of gender gap and interested in event
organisation. It's estimated the project would take place over
September-November, requiring 10-20 hours a week of time. *
*Anyone interested or wanting to find out more please contact Daria by
28th July. *
 *Many thanks, *

[Wikimediauk-l] Scholarships for UK based attendees of AdaCamp Berlin 2014

2014-07-24 Thread Daria Cybulska
Hi All,

AdaCamp http://adacamp.org/ is a conference dedicated to increasing
women’s participation in open technology and culture. It brings women
together to build community, share skills, discuss problems with open
tech/culture communities that affect women, and find ways to address them.
It has been taking place for several years in the US and Australia, but in
2014 it is coming to Europe for the first time. The Berlin AdaCamp will be
October 11-12, 2014 at the Wikimedia Deutschland
https://wikimedia.de/wiki/Hauptseite offices. It will also focus strongly
on the Wikimedia community in particular.

It is a valuable opportunity for UK Wikimedians to attend a focused event
(of only about 50 attendees) where we will focus on learning practical
things and planning future projects.

If you have experience in open tech/culture, experience or knowledge of
feminism and advocacy and the ability to collaborate with others, you
should apply!

We would like to help build a community of UK Wikimedians supporting women
in open tech/culture – especially Wikimedia projects – and for that reason
we are offering scholarships for UK applicants.

To learn more about the event visit their website
http://berlin.adacamp.org/.

To read about the application process and find out how to receive a
scholarship, please visit this page http://berlin.adacamp.org/apply/.

Hi All,

Over the last couple of months I've been working on reviewing the
Wikimedian in Residence programme run by Wikimedia UK. Part of which was
informed by the Community survey, which some of you would have participated
in. I will be promoting the report more widely later in July, but it would
be great to hear your early thoughts. Please see the report *here*

possible space for comments could be here

I would like to get the report printed for Wikimania - if you have any
comments that would require changes of content do let me know by Friday 4th

Otherwise, any broader comments, or further discussion about the programme
itself, would be very welcome.

Subject: [MCG] New Jisc guide to making your digital resources easier to
discover
To: m...@jiscmail.ac.uk

Dear all,

Back in February I mentioned on the list that I was working with others on
a Jisc guide to making digital resources easier to discover. This guide,
along with other outputs from the Jisc Spotlight on the Digital project
has now been published.

For an overview of all the work from the project this blog post from David
Prosser (Director of Research Libraries UK) gives a good overview
http://www.jisc.ac.uk/blog/action-on-discoverability-03-jun-2014
Paola Marchionni has also posted a link to all the Spotlight on the Digital
recommendations and output at
http://digitisation.jiscinvolve.org/wp/2014/06/03/spotlight-on-the-digital-final-recommendations-and-outputs/

The guide itself is available at
http://www.jisc.ac.uk/guides/make-your-digital-resources-easier-to-discover

The guide covers a wide range of approaches to making digital resources
easier to discovery. Each approach is linked back to research on how users
search and discover digital resources (summarised at
http://www.jisc.ac.uk/guides/how-do-users-find-your-content), as well as
linking to organisation strategic aims as identified by university
libraries (some of which maybe shared by museums, but clearly there are
some differences here).

I hope the guide is of interest and useful, and I'd be very interested to
hear what people think.

Thanks

[Wikimediauk-l] Upcoming volunteer opportunities to speak about Wikipedia

2014-04-28 Thread Daria Cybulska
Dear All,

There are two exciting volunteer opportunities within expert outreach and
Wikipedia that I wanted to flag up.

* Science Communications and Public Engagement workshop on *19 June*,
London, run by Society for Applied Microbiology, but open to a wider
audience from other science organisations. See a draft agenda below. This
is a really good opportunity to talk about using Wikipedia in Science
communication to the right audience. Some details remain to be pinned down,
so whoever is keen to deliver this can adapt the programme.

* A talk about Wikipedia and how a learned society can engage with it
at Physiology
2014 http://www.physiology2014.org/, London, which takes place over* 30
June - 2 July.* Probably a brief presentation (or a workshop, depending on
your preference) to function as a part of the conference, to lead to a full
training workshop in October in the office of the Physiology Society. The
details are up for discussion and so we would arrange a meeting with the
conference organiser to pin it all down.

Do get in touch if you are interested in getting involved!

Many thanks,
 Daria

1330 - *Parallel sessions part I*

Session A - Public Engagement in Schools: Delivering the World of
Microbiology programme (Anthony Hilton et al)

*Session B - Wikipedia: Bringing accurate, evidence based information to
the public* (trainers from Wikimedia)

An interactive workshop introducing Wikipedia as an important source of
information and teaching participants how to edit entries and the dos and
don'ts of doing so.

1515 - Coffee

1530 - *Parallel sessions part II*

1630 - *Close*

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Community consultation on WMUK's Wikimedia in Residence programme

2014-03-14 Thread Daria Cybulska
Good points here, many thanks!

I thought it would help to provide some explanations to the discussion here:

- Yes there were residencies that are not taken into considerations here.
We wanted to consider the residencies that had institutions in significant
cooperation with the chapter, the BL being in the grey area. It was felt
it's an important case to consider though.

- Mike is offering good points for additional aspects that could be
considered. If anyone has thoughts that go beyond the survey's questions,
please do email me!

Otherwise, it would be great to have more people contributing to the
survey.

Many thanks again,
Daria

I agree with Mike, but I would add that it's good that the chapter is

 Derby, ARKive...

As promised to Richard offlist, I've just gone through the survey and
filled it in. There were a number of questions that were rather odd in
their phrasing or allowed answers though. For example:

Question 2: these were all very general questions (e.g. asking about the
lengths of WiRs and their benefits to the community) that could only be
answered 'Not at all', 'Moderately' and 'Completely'. I went for
'moderately' for all of these as there wasn't really anything to completely
disagree or agree with here - e.g. length of residencies, it's not clear
whether saying 'Completely' would indicate support of 3-month or 1-year
 residencies.

Questions 5 and 6: these are nearly impossible to answer as a 'select 3'
question. Having a ranked answer here would be much more effective.

I was also expecting to see more questions on topics like 'what are the
most important aspects and outcomes of a successful WiR project?', 'how
would you like to be involved in future WiR projects?' and 'how can WiR
 projects better engage volunteers?'.

My main suggestion would be: please share drafts of surveys like this
on-wiki and ask for feedback on them before starting to ask for answers to
them! WMUK's membership survey is a really good example of how such surveys
can be collaboratively designed and carried out.

 Thanks,
 Mike

volunteers in Wales and the immediate surrounding areas. We are especially
interested in editors of Wicipedia Cymraeg who work through the Welsh
language. However, both English and Welsh language editors will be welcomed.

The workshop will be delivered by a professional training company and aims
to improve delegates’ abilities to deliver any training workshop. It’s
especially relevant to anybody who already runs Wikimedia-related training,
or is very interested in doing so in near future.

The workshop is a chance to:

- Get accredited and receive detailed feedback about your presenting
 and training skills
- Get general trainer skills which you can then apply when delivering
 specific Wikipedia workshops
- Share your skills with others
- Help design a training programme that serves Wikimedia UK in the long
 term.

The course will run from 9:30 am—6:30pm on Saturday and 9am—5pm on Sunday.
A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. We should also be able to
cover travel and accommodation if you let us know in advance.

If you are interested in attending, please indicate your commitment by
 signing up on
 https://wiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Training_the_Trainers/November_2013_event.
Spaces are limited to 12 places.

If you are not able to attend this time but would like to take part in the
future, please add it to the event page or let me know by email to

 future.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. I can also put

Museum Metamorphosis
The Adaptable and Changing Museum
Tuesday 5— Wednesday 6 November 2013

A Two-Day Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Conference hosted by the
School of Museum Studies, University of Leicester, in partnership with
Leicester Arts Museums Service

This conference seeks to explore the phenomenon of metamorphosis — or
change — in the museum. Museums are often perceived to arrest time, or go
beyond it, yet they are not fixed or static entities. It has often been
claimed that in order to become meaningful, museums should change by
addressing and responding to the needs of society. Is this the case? Museum
Metamorphosis —The Adaptable and Changing Museum will be the fifth
conference organised by the PhD community at the School of Museum Studies,
University of Leicester, and follows last year's highly successful Museum
Utopias.

AIMS AND TOPICS
We aim to discuss and share ideas on some of the most seminal issues in
museums today. Papers addressing the following themes and questions are
encouraged, but we also welcome new suggestions and creative proposals.

• How might we define metamorphosis in the context of the museum?

• Metamorphosis is a concept that resonates across many disciplines,
from biology and geology to literary studies. How can such different
conceptions of metamorphosis be harnessed in order to consider change in
the museum?

• How do museums deal with resistance to change, both internally and
externally?

• What are some of the opportunities and/or risks arising from
constant and never-ending change in the museum?

• Historically, how has the museum changed from its early inception?

• What organisational changes have museum institutions implemented,
and how has the museum profession responded to these?

• How have digital and other technological trends impacted upon the
way we conceive museums and the ways in which museums relate to their
communities?

• Have collections and displays been made relevant for contemporary
audiences? If so, how? If not, why not?

• How have museological concepts such as learning, interpretation and
collection adapted to new contexts?

• How, and to what extent, are new trends in exhibition-making
creating the museum anew? How have museum-making processes changed?

• How can we describe changing understandings of museum space?

• How has our knowledge of the complex range of visitor experiences
shifted? What impact has this had?

• How are museums used to create identity on different levels, and
how are museums' identities created in turn by the communities they serve?

• To what extent are museums an instrument for social change, and to
what extent is change forced upon them?

• How can museums explore and reflect contemporary discussions in
society?

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
The conference team welcomes all postgraduate students and early career
researchers, as well as professionals who are interested in and researching
topics related to the museum field. All disciplines and nationalities are
invited to participate.

FORMAT AND STYLE OF PRESENTATIONS
We welcome and encourage alternative presentational styles, besides the
traditional paper. Workshops, panel debates, creative writing and film,
installations, visual creations and displays will all be considered.

Presenters will have 20 minutes (plus 10 minutes Q A) to deliver their
papers. Workshops and panel debates will be up to 60 minutes in duration.

ABSTRACTS
Abstracts should include the following information:
1) title of abstract
2) author(s)' name and contact information
3) biography (max. 100 words)

[Wikimediauk-l] Wikimedia UK Ada Lovelace Day 2012 included in Royal Society's diversity report

2013-05-02 Thread Daria Cybulska
Dear All,

Earlier this week I have attended a Diversity Day at the Royal
Society. It was an event to showcase what the society is doing within
its programme of removing barriers to increasing diversity in the
scientific workforce. One strand of what they do within the programme
is specific activities/events, such as the Ada Lovelace Day organised
by Wikimedia UK in 2012.

In fact we have been highlighted in their progress report for March
2013, which you can access here:
http://royalsociety.org/uploadedFiles/Royal_Society_Content/policy/projects/leading-way-diversity/2013-04-26-LW-ProgressReport.pdf
(page 6).

Best wishes,
Daria

[Wikimediauk-l] Wikimedia UK and Women of the World festival on Saturday 9 March

2013-03-01 Thread Daria Cybulska
Dear All,

I have organised for Wikimedia UK to be present at the Southbank's Women of
the World festival (London) on Saturday 9 March to coincide with
International Women's Day. It is only a 30 minute slot to talk about women
on Wikipedia and motivate people to edit. Richard N and Stevie are
preparing a leaflet that will be key to getting people involved - it will
be distributed around Southbank and should get people enthusiastic. But if
there is someone that would like to join me on the 9th do get in touch with
me by 5th March - I could take one person to join me for the presentation.

Thank you,
Daria

[Wikimediauk-l] Seeking panellists for a women in technology event - 25 February, London

2013-01-30 Thread Daria Cybulska
   - Subject: Seeking panellists for a women in technology event!

The third Tech Talkfest event is taking place at 6.30pm on Monday 25th
February at Shoreditch House, London. The theme is 'Women in Technology and
Gaming' and they are currently seeking one more panelist.

You would be part of a four person panel. They would like you to give a 10
minute talk on stories and tips from your career that would be helpful to
people who want to achieve what you have. This could include things you
learnt that helped to turn your career around, challenges that seemed
insurmountable that you overcame, ways that you dealt with common issues
(managing childcare/maternity, gaining skills in a new area, how to present
yourself for promotion/interview) or anything else that you think is useful.

Each panellist will speak for 10 minutes and then they will open it to the
floor for questions. The total length will be 60 minutes. You could stay
for networking later.

They're looking for two more successful women in working technology or
gaming, preferably in startups or small companies.

More info about the event can be found here:
http://www.techtalkfest.com/next-event.html

Let me know if you can do it, otherwise I should be able to attend if
needed.

Best,

Daria

[Wikimediauk-l] Ada Lovelace Day organised by Wikimedia UK - 19 October 2012, London

2012-09-17 Thread Daria Cybulska
Dear all,

It's Ada Lovelace Day on 16 October and it's most suitable for Wikimedia UK
to get involved. The day exists to celebrate the contributions of women in
the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. As you may
know, Ada Lovelace is considered the first programmer, due to her work on
Charles Babbage's analytical engine. As such, she's someone we can very
much hold up as a role model. Wikimedia UK is organising a Women in Science
themed editing event for Ada Lovelace Day on* Friday 19 October* 2012 and
would like to invite you to attend!

We have organised a group 'Edit-a-thon' to improve Wikipedia articles about
women in science, held at the Royal Society's library, London, 2:30-6pm. We
had a very high response from the academic community, and we filled many
more spaces than expected! However, there are still a couple of places free
for people who would like to help train new contributors - please get in
touch if you are interested. There will also be opportunities to get
involved online, which we will publish at our Wikimedia UK event's
pagehttp://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Ada_Lovelace_Day_2012(see below).

Following the Edit-a-thon there will be an panel discussion with Uta Frith
from the Royal Society and other female scientists on women in science (the
focus will be much broader than just the representation of the topic on
Wikipedia). The panel discussion will take place from* 6:30pm - 8:00pm, *and
you are most welcome to attend - there are still free places available, so
please feel free to register here
*http://royalsociety.org/events/2012/wikipedia-workshop/*

Wikimedia UK also has a page for the event, which you can see here
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Ada_Lovelace_Day_2012

Hope to see many of you there.

Best,
Daria

2012-09-10 Thread Daria Cybulska
Dear All,

Today the second Wikimedia UK Intern has started working in our office.
Hasina will be joining us for the next 6-7 weeks. She is just getting her
email and account set up (hasina.kha...@wikimedia.org.uk), but in the
meantime here is a hello message from her:
*

My first day at Wikimedia and i have to say i am very excited. I have just
finished my role as a Gamesmaker during the Paralympics, which was a truely
amazing experience. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to be involved
in such a big event. I am now ready to be in work mode and keen to start my
internship with Wikimedia. *
*
I have just graduated this summer, I studied Politics at Middlesex
University and have had experience in many political institues such as
Parliament, The London Assembly and a Think Tank Called Demos. Having
experience from my past internships, I am really interested to see how
Wikimedia function as a charity and still have such a big impact on
spreading information just as successfully. I am looking forward to meeting
as many of you as possible - just this week I am planning to attend the
GLAMcamp in London. *

Best,
Daria

[Wikimediauk-l] Wikimedia UK training for the charities in our office - 27/09/12 - we need more trainers

2012-08-29 Thread Daria Cybulska
Dear All,

Wikimedia UK is located in a building that we are sharing with ca. 20 other
charities. In May we delivered a short presentation to them talking about
Wikimedia UK and Wikipedia, and there was a lot of interest in learning to
edit. This would be particularly interesting as the charities in the

I am setting up a drop-in style editing event in our office on Thursday 27
September, 11am - 4pm, and it would be great if you could attend to give

For more information and to sign up please visit *
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Ethical_Properties_Wikipedia_Workshop/September_event
*

We have promoted the event on the building's mailing list and a couple of
charities have signed up already, so it would be great to have one or two
more trainers signed up.

We would be able to reimburse reasonable travel and lunch costs.

Best wishes,
Daria

2012-08-29 Thread Daria Cybulska
Thanks for the comments and useful notes about the internship. I can
assure you that we all share coffee making duties in the office, and
hopefully have created an encouraging atmosphere where Isabelle can
get involved in new and exciting projects. She has also attended the
London Wikimeet to get to know some of our volunteers.

We will be doing end of the Internship feedback session, together with
a blog post so you can all find out how the internship went.

We are also having another intern starting on 10 September which we
are all looking forward to.

Regards,
Daria

I'm pleased to see a list of tasks at the link.

I've not been an intern but I did two bouts of work experience at
school age and my times at both were appallingly rotten experiences.
 So please try to avoid:

 1. Giving them too many trips to the coffee making facilities (making
refreshments is an OK thing to get an intern to do, but please make
them one every now and again and please don't make them feel that
 refreshments is their key role).

 2. Please find interesting things for them to do. If the office is
busy there may be a temptation to think well, in the time it takes me
to train the intern to do this, I could have done it myself. But the
intern is there to develop skills. So please teach them some cool
 stuff,

It would also be great if people would make an effort to drop by the
office and chat to the intern on a friendly basis.

Is there a plan for the intern to fill in feedback about her time
there? It would be good for WMUK to know what she thinks and to feed
that back for when the next intern is present.

Don't know whether Isabelle is going to see this (is she on the
mailing list now?) but if so: hello! I hope you have a fulfilling
 time.

many interesting talks from the community.

[Wikimediauk-l] Wikimedia UK will have interns over the next three months

2012-08-13 Thread Daria Cybulska
Dear All,

Wikimedia UK will have an intern in the office working with us for 6 weeks
over the Summer (as per http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Summer_intern). Some
of you had a chance to meet Isabelle at the London meetup on Sunday. She is
just getting her email and account set up, but in the meantime here is a
hello message from her:

*Hello! It's Isabelle here, the new intern at Wikimedia UK. I'm a 22
year-old originally from Shropshire, just graduated from King's College
London where I studied French. I'm thrilled to be spending the next six
weeks in the office, getting an insight into all the exciting projects that
are happening and assisting the team with all manner of things, and I look
forward to meeting as many volunteers as possible while I'm here. As a
newcomer to the Wikimedia movement I feel I've got a lot to learn as well
as to contribute, but surrounded by such knowledgeable people I'm sure it's
going to be a very fun process, and one that will speed by... So I'd better
get to work! *

We will have another intern starting early September, so I am sure you will
hear from both of them more soon.

Best,
Daria

[Wikimediauk-l] WMUK merchandise

2012-07-27 Thread Daria Cybulska
Dear All,

I am planning on ordering Wikimedia UK branded lanyards, polo shirts and
notepads to be used at events. If you would like to send across any ideas
concerning the design of these, then please do send them here - ideally by
3 August.

Polo shirts:
- These would be stitched on, so the smaller design the better. I have seen
a couple of chapters having the polo shirts with just the Wikimedia... logo
in the upper left corner, and that looked quite professional.

As for the lanyard:
- 4 colour print on one side
- Another option would be to only use one colour, which is much cheaper

As for the notebook, a cost effective way would be to have:
- A5 Wirebound Book with 350gsm Card Cover
- Cover printed 4 colour (allowing for Wikimedia UK logo)
- 50 insert sheets printed 1 colour both sides

The bigger quantity I order, the cheaper the items get, so it is best if
the merchandise designed is of general character and not geared towards a
specific event.

I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts. You can also jot them down
herehttp://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/2012_Activity_Plan/Outreach_merchandise_%26_publications

The timings of the training are: Saturday 9:30 am - 6:30pm, Sunday 9am -

training event on 1-2 December 2012, and to hold it *outside of London. *If
you have an idea for a good location for such training, please let me know.

[Wikimediauk-l] University of Hertfordshire Wikipedia workshop 14 August 2012

University of Hertfordshire (Hatfield, Hertfordshire, AL10 9AB) has
contacted Wikimedia UK with a request to have a Wikipedia training run for
them on Tuesday 14 August, 10am-4pm. There is a group of staff at the
University that would like to be introduced into the ways of editing
Wikipedia. This will hopefully in the future lead to a further partnership
between the University and Wikimedia UK.

I have created a simple page with the details:

If you would like to run/help run this session, please do sign up on the

 Hi all,

As many of you know, as part of my work at the British Library I'll be
organizing a series of training workshops on behalf of AHRC for
postgraduates and academics, at various institutions around the
country. These are mostly half-day sessions, giving training to
specialists who are interested in contributing to Wikipedia or other
Wikimedia projects, or learning more about engaging and collaborating
with the Wikimedia community - I'm modelling them on the past sessions
run by WMUK with, eg, the Institute of Physics.

 http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Institute_of_Physics_Workshop

If they involve more than a small number of people, I'm quite keen to
have someone else around, since it helps a lot if there's two or three
people available to answer questions, demonstrate things, etc. If
you'd be interested in coming along to one of these sessions and
helping show people the ropes, please let me know and I'll keep you
informed of future dates locations - I can cover reasonable travel
 expenses where needed...

Alternatively, if you have contacts who you think might be interested
in hosting one at their institution, I'd be really interested to hear
about it - part of the trick with setting these up is finding the
 right person to approach!

 Thanks all,

[Wikimediauk-l] Anybody interested in presenting on Wikipedia? (Edinburgh 2nd July 4-6pm)

2012-06-06 Thread Daria Cybulska
Dear All,

Physiological Society is having an annual conference on 3-5 July in *
Edinburgh*. They are giving Wikipedia a slot on *Monday 2 July 4-6pm*. They
would like to have an introductory
presentation and some examples of how articles have been edited to show to
the attendees of the conference. It would be a presentation more than a
workshop because of the time constraints. The idea is to use this session
to promote an actual training event to happen later on in the year in
London and make attendees feel confident to make small edits and
corrections to articles. The projected attendance for this presentation is
quite small (10 people max).

Brian McNeil is potentially doing the presentation, but is there anybody
else interested in case he is unavailable? Due to the location and the
small scale of the event this would be a good opportunity for somebody with
easy transport links to Edinburgh.

Please do let me know if you are interested.

Best,
Daria

the day will be similar to the 2010 event
