[Wikitech-ambassadors] Tech News (2022 week 02)

2022-01-10 Thread Nick Wilson (Quiddity)
The latest technical newsletter is now available at <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News/2022/02>.
Below is the English version.

You can help write the next newsletter: whenever you see information about
Wikimedia technology that you think should be distributed more broadly, you
can add it to the next newsletter at <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News/Next>.

More information on how to contribute is available at <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News#contribute>. You can also contact
me directly.

As always, feedback (on- or off-list) is appreciated and encouraged.

*Recent changes*

   - [image: Advanced item] A oauth_consumer variable has been added to the
   AbuseFilter
    to
enable identifying changes made by specific tools. [1]

   - [image: Advanced item] Gadgets are now able to directly include JSON
   pages

.
This means some gadgets can now be configured by administrators without
needing the interface administrator permission, such as with the Geonotice
   gadget. [2]
   - [image: Advanced item] Gadgets can now specify page actions
    on which they
are available. For example, |actions=edit, history will load a gadget
only while editing and on history pages. [3]

   - [image: Advanced item] Gadgets can now be loaded on demand with the
withgadget URL parameter. This can be used to replace an earlier snippet

that typically looks like withJS or withCSS. [4]

   - [image: Advanced item] At wikis where the Mentorship system is
   configured

,
you can now use the Action API to get a list of a mentor's

   mentees. [5]
   - The heading on the main page can now be configured using
   MediaWiki:Mainpage-title-loggedin
    for
   logged-in users and MediaWiki:Mainpage-title
    for
logged-out users. Any CSS that was previously used to hide the heading
   should be removed. [6]

   [7]
   - Four special pages (and their API counterparts) now have a maximum
database query execution time of 30 seconds. These special pages are:
RecentChanges, Watchlist, Contributions, and Log. This change will help
with site performance and stability. You can read more details about

[Wikitech-ambassadors] Community Wishlist Survey 2022 has begun!

2022-01-10 Thread Szymon Grabarczuk
As you might have noticed, there are banners informing that the Community
Wishlist Survey 2022 has begun.

I've published a blog post:
https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/01/10/what-improvements-in-wikimedia-platforms-would-you-like-to-see-help-the-wikimedia-foundation-to-grant-the-communities-wishes/

My request is simple: feel encouraged to do everything and anything
mentioned in the blog post, and invite others to do the same. In
particular, spread the word outside of wikis - on Telegram groups, Discord
channels, affiliate chats - anywhere you deem appropriate.

Please let me know if anything needs to be clarified or changed.

Thank you!
