[Wikitech-l] COMPLETED: Mailing lists server migration today
On sJan 13/sJan 18, 2012, at 2:54 PM, Mark Bergsma wrote: Today I will be migrating the mailing lists from a very old server (lily) in Amsterdam, to a new server (sodium) in our new Ashburn data center. Mailman will be upgraded to version 2.1.13 along the way. During the migration, mail will be delayed as all data will need to be transferred to the new host. No mail should go lost, but no new mails will be sent out during the process until done, and the web interface will be unavailable. This shouldn't take about one hour, if all goes well. I will report here when things should be back up and running. Afterwards, please let us know of any new issues, in bugzilla or on IRC (#wikimedia-tech). We don't expect any problems, but as with any software upgrade or migration, this can't be guaranteed... The mailing lists server migration is now complete - Mailman is now running on server sodium. As some people pointed out, my message earlier today was indeed sent out with the wrong Date header. I simply redirected my old mail and edited it a bit, forgetting that the Date header would not be adjusted by my mail client. Sorry for that. :) The Mailman migration went smoothly, and I'm not aware of any problems. Please let us know in Bugzilla or on IRC (#wikimedia-tech) if you're experiencing any new issues. Unfortunately we needed to change the IP address of lists.wikimedia.org for this migration. Some large e-mail providers (e.g. Google) are rate limiting reception of mail messages from the new IP (208.80.154.4) because it's not known and whitelisted yet. To prevent further mail delivery delays today, I've configured the new lists server to forward mails that would otherwise be delayed via the old mail server and old source IP address again, for the time being. Not sure what you mean. How is using the user specified skin to generate links different from using the user specified preferences to generate date formats or edit sections links? Regardless, I don't really care about all that. What I'm really looking for is a way to work around this issue from an extension point of view. There don't seem to be any hooks in Linker or Parser that allow you to modify the way links are parsed. It does not feel like 'oops wikipedia is gone !!?' but more like just another anyyoing advert. You should do a straightforward real shutdown instead, and deliver a fake 404 with explanation link. I believe Delphine is referring to this page, which is the one that gets shared on social media: http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/SOPA/Blackoutpage It's a static page and it never had geo. Easiest thing to do would be to add the share buttons. Geo on the main blackout page is working as far as we know. -- Erik Möller VP of Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Foundation Support Free Knowledge: http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Donate ___ Wikitech-l mailing list Wikitech-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikitech-l -- Jeremy Postlethwaite jpostlethwa...@wikimedia.org 515-839-6885 x6790 Backend Software Developer Wikimedia Foundation http://wikimediafoundation.org/ ___ Wikitech-l mailing list Wikitech-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikitech-l
[Wikitech-l] Wednesday wikipedia shut down does not get through
Michael wrote: Date: 2012-01-18 16:18:15 GMT (1 hour and 11 minutes ago) To make the redirect a javascript is not a good idea. +100 At least 2,213,922 users will never see it https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noscript/?src=search and maybe way, way more since there are many similar features on any browser or platform. Today, virtually NONE of my (many) friends ever noticed something changed, until i told them. And even with js, you can see the 'real' page popping up first before the redirect takes action. It does not feel like 'oops wikipedia is gone !!?' but more like just another anyyoing advert. You should do a straightforward real shutdown instead, and deliver a fake 404 with explanation link. And for several more days. +1 And yes i would even block editing since this is also alerting people. +1 signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ Wikitech-l mailing list Wikitech-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikitech-l

Re: [Wikitech-l] SOPA commercial social networks
2012/1/18 Antoine Musso hashar+...@free.fr: Social buttons are leaking your private data (URL you are browsing) to a private company (ex: facebook) which already know a ton of things about you. We talk about simple links, not iFrames or JavaScript. I do not want to see the Facebook logo on any Wikipedia page. It is more an advertisement for Facebook than an advertisement for Wikipedia on Facebook. Re: [Wikitech-l] Text browser users won't see your important site notice
Michael, As was mentioned here, a 503 would be the most appropriate HTTP response code to serve. It would also prevent non-js users and text-only users from bypassing, it would avoid the flicker effect, and would cause search engines to correctly back off trying to index our pages. It would also correctly shut down all editing (if the site can not be read, why do you need emergency edit rights anyway?) I have no idea why this ineffective kludge was effected instead.
