Re: [Wikitech-l] Text browser users won't see your important site notice

2012-01-18 Thread jidanni
Ha, the blackout is a javascript powered blackout.
No reason to bother text browser users, they won't notice the disruption
in the first place!

Please don't remove $wgSiteNotice from Mediawiki.
It's the only way we http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Wiki_family
administrators can with one edit to LocalSettings.php put a notice on
our many wikis, without editing each MediaWiki:Sitenotice etc. database
changing operations.

DG http://stats.wikimedia.org/wikimedia/squids/SquidReportClients.htm
That table looks horrible in text browsers.

Yeah, the page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:SOPA_initiative/Learn_more

[MediaWiki-CodeReview] [MediaWiki r107982]: New comment added

Hashar posted a comment on MediaWiki.r107982.
URL: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Code/MediaWiki/107982#c29722

Commit summary for MediaWiki.r107982:

[jquery.footHovzer] new plugin for mw-log-console and mw-debug-toolbar
* Previously mw.log and mw.Debug both were in a fixed container on the bottom,
overlapping each other. mw.log did increase the body's padding-bottom to
account for the height so that all content is still visible, but it was still a
problem when mw.Debug came along.
* This plugin adds a single fixed position element to bottom of the body, to
which other stuff like mw.log and mw.Debug can append a non-fixed position
container. That will take care of it.
* Method update() will re-check the padding and scroll position and fix where
needed
* Reduces code a little bit

[Wikitech-l] Fwd: [Wmfcc-l] Black out saying Enter your Zip Code but not saying in the US

Date: 2012/1/18
Subject: [Wmfcc-l] Black out saying Enter your Zip Code but not
saying in the US
To: Communications Committee wmfc...@lists.wikimedia.org

Hello,

just realised that the blackout page to which social media buttons
point is US centric (Contact your representatives), which is OK,  but
it is being spread worldwide and the zip code thing makes little sense
for someone who is *not* in the US.

Could we add If you're in the US to it or something? It's kind of
confusing otherwise.

Cheers,

Delphine

--

Hey folks,

It looks like Delphine Menard is not getting the international
geolocated version of the blackout page. I believe she's in Berlin.

FWIW Florence Devouard, in France, *is* getting the international version.

Thanks,
Sue

Call your elected officials.

Tell them you are their constituent, and you oppose SOPA and PIPA.

Why?

SOPA and PIPA put the burden on website owners to police
user-contributed material and call for the unnecessary blocking of
entire sites. Small sites won't have sufficient resources to defend
themselves. Big media companies may seek to cut off funding sources
for their foreign competitors, even if copyright isn't being
infringed. Foreign sites will be blacklisted, which means they won't
show up in major search engines. SOPA and PIPA build a framework for
future restrictions and suppression.

In a world in which politicians regulate the Internet based on the
influence of big money, Wikipedia — and sites like it — cannot
survive.

Congress says it's trying to protect the rights of copyright owners,
but the cure that SOPA and PIPA represent is worse than the disease.
SOPA and PIPA are not the answer: they will fatally damage the free
and open Internet.

I disagree. First step would be to convince Wikipedia et al that
social networking buttons are a good idea.

Social networking button type extensions are very simple (Its a linked
image, that's it) and thus trivial to create. The issue has always
been that whenever asked, the Wikipedians say no (and its not like
they once said no 7 years ago, the topic seems to come up at a quite
regular basis).

[Wikitech-l] COMPLETED: Mailing lists server migration today

2012-01-18 Thread Mark Bergsma

On sJan 13/sJan 18, 2012, at 2:54 PM, Mark Bergsma wrote:

Today I will be migrating the mailing lists from a very old server (lily) in
Amsterdam, to a new server (sodium) in our new Ashburn data center. Mailman
will be upgraded to version 2.1.13 along the way.

During the migration, mail will be delayed as all data will need to be
transferred to the new host. No mail should go lost, but no new mails will be
sent out during the process until done, and the web interface will be
unavailable. This shouldn't take about one hour, if all goes well.

I will report here when things should be back up and running. Afterwards,
please let us know of any new issues, in bugzilla or on IRC
(#wikimedia-tech). We don't expect any problems, but as with any software
upgrade or migration, this can't be guaranteed...

The mailing lists server migration is now complete - Mailman is now running on
server sodium.

As some people pointed out, my message earlier today was indeed sent out with
the wrong Date header. I simply redirected my old mail and edited it a bit,
forgetting that the Date header would not be adjusted by my mail client. Sorry
for that. :)

The Mailman migration went smoothly, and I'm not aware of any problems. Please
let us know in Bugzilla or on IRC (#wikimedia-tech) if you're experiencing any
new issues.

Unfortunately we needed to change the IP address of lists.wikimedia.org for
this migration. Some large e-mail providers (e.g. Google) are rate limiting
reception of mail messages from the new IP (208.80.154.4) because it's not
known and whitelisted yet. To prevent further mail delivery delays today, I've
configured the new lists server to forward mails that would otherwise be
delayed via the old mail server and old source IP address again, for the time
being.

Thanks,

[MediaWiki-CodeReview] [MediaWiki r85244]: New comment added

2012-01-18 Thread MediaWiki Mail
Cneubauer posted a comment on MediaWiki.r85244.
URL: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Code/MediaWiki/85244#c29732

Commit summary for MediaWiki.r85244:

Drop connetion between Skin and Linker and turn Linker into a staticly usable
class.

Cneubauer's comment:

Things which should actually NEVER be trying to load up a skin which is
dependent on the user in the current session. I just finally implemented what
was noted forever.

Not sure what you mean. How is using the user specified skin to generate links
different from using the user specified preferences to generate date formats or
edit sections links?

Regardless, I don't really care about all that. What I'm really looking for is
a way to work around this issue from an extension point of view. There don't
seem to be any hooks in Linker or Parser that allow you to modify the way links
are parsed. I guess the best option is to override the replaceInternalLinks
function in a custom Parser subclass. Any other suggestions on that?

Today, virtually NONE of my (many) friends ever noticed something changed,
until i told them.

And even with js, you can see the 'real' page popping up first before the
redirect takes action. It does not feel like 'oops wikipedia is gone !!?' but
more like just another anyyoing advert.

You should do a straightforward real shutdown instead, and deliver a fake 404
with explanation link.
And for several more days.

And yes i would even block editing since this is also alerting people.

No way I am going to let anyone do that on any WMF site. Social buttons
are leaking your private data (URL you are browsing) to a private
company (ex: facebook) which already know a ton of things about you.

Remote linking is bad.

Michael,
As was mentioned here, a 503 would be the most appropriate HTTP response
code to serve. It would also prevent non-js users and text-only users from
bypassing, it would avoid the flicker effect, and would cause search
engines to correctly back off trying to index our pages. It would also
correctly shut down all editing (if the site can not be read, why do you
need emergency edit rights anyway?) I have no idea why this ineffective
kludge was effected instead.

I was rather concerned by people thinking we need to allow emergency
