Re: [Wikitech-l] PHP 5.4 (we wish)

2013-06-19 Thread Jeroen De Dauw
Hey,

An interesting question to ask here is why the WMF is still running PHP
5.3, and what the plans are for upgrading to 5.4.

In general MW seems to work just fine on PHP 5.4 or 5.5. One possible
exception being that update.php appears to have been broken with PHP 5.5
yesterday: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49819

Cheers

Presumably they're still using PHP 5.3 because Precise (12.04 LTS) is
still on PHP 5.3:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/php5

Only the non-LTS releases have PHP 5.4.

...that said, I hope we don't have to wait till April 2017 when that LTS
goes EOL before we can kill PHP 5.3.

[Wikitech-l] Public hangout on Travis CI

2013-06-19 Thread Denny Vrandečić
Tomorrow at 2pm Berlin time, the Wikidata team will host a public hangout
on Travis. This is mostly meant to inform ourselves, but it might be a good
resource for others as well.

We might be late, as this is the first time we are doing such a thing, so
bring a bit patience.

We will try to record it and make it available afterwards.

We will send the login data and URLs to IRC on #wikimedia-wikidata around
that time.

Thanks to Jeroen for preparing the session, and Lydia for the technical
setup.

Cheers,
Denny

I doubt it. I imagine we'll look to the new LTS when it comes out.

This is very interesting, thank you for organizing what could be called

For the second one let's sync just a bit to have a page for it at
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Meetings and promote it at
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Calendar (aka mediawiki.org

[Wikitech-l] MediaWiki errors on Wikimedia wikis

2013-06-19 Thread Ori Livneh
I added a link to http://tinyurl.com/n3twd8k to the channel topic of
#wikimedia-tech #wikimedia-operations. It points to a live graph of
MediaWiki's error rate over the last 24 hours . I hope to automate
monitoring of this data sometime soon, but in the meantime let's keep an
eye on it collectively, especially right after deployments.

Cool.

Is there any *public* list of which exceptions/errors they are. Seeing
how many isn't all that helpful unless we know which ones. (yeah yeah
I know, there's concerns about data leakage with backtraces, but just
the exception names w/o backtrace should be safe (?))

If you can get ops to adds in a nagios plugin to check a ganglia metric,
we could get IRC spam whenever something is wrong :)

A fairly recent plugin:

 https://github.com/MrMichaelWill/nagios-ganglia-plugin

There is even a python plugin in Ganglia/contrib (5 years old though):

Re: [Wikitech-l] GSoC coding starts officially today! (was Re: GSoC Mentor Summit)

2013-06-19 Thread Quim Gil
Hi, I'm hoping to finish the blog post about GSoC / OPW this week. I'm
drafting it at

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Blog/Drafts/GSoC_OPW_fake_title#Yevheniy_.28Chernihiv.29_-_Improvement_of_Glossary_tools

I started with the excerpts of the students user pages, so you have
more time to look at them and edit at well. These are your words, I
just cut the quotes to similar, short sizes trying to leave the
essence and an attitude...

Every entry will have also a mention to the mentors, linking to their
user pages as in
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Mentorship_programs/Possible_mentors

On Mon, Jun 17, 2013 at 4:08 PM, Quim Gil q...@wikimedia.org wrote:

 Nobody signed up?

Ok, at least someone did. Just to make sure the circumstances are
lcear: this is a great event, travel and accommodation is sponsored
and hundreds of mentors out there wish to be invited.

Anyway, since today the GSoC bonding period is officially over and everybody
should have started working on development tasks. Is this the case?

I have sent a ping to the 4 teams that haven't added a Bonding: OK
tag to the table yet. Hopefully the only problem is that they forgot
to edit the table and all the rest is fine, with their projects
started and well focused.

With an implicit heads up for the completion of the community bonding
 period:

 https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Summer_of_Code_2013#Community_bonding_period

We will have a GSoC/OPW IRC AllHands next week. CONFIRMED

 Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at 15:00 UTC (8:30pm IST, 8am PDT)
 http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20130626T08p1=224ah=1

This is now confirmed and I will send a proper invitation to all
students and mentors.

In addition to this, I will meet all the student/mentors teams one by one
 via videoconference.

 Happy coding!

Is there any kind of Roadmap file that lists stuff that you think would
be great to get fixed next or other random ideas, for potential drive-by
