[Wikitech-l] Discovery Weekly Update for the week starting 2017-08-14

2017-08-18 Thread Chris Koerner
Hi again,
This is the Discovery weekly update for 2017-08-14. As always, feedback and
questions are welcome.

== Highlights ==
* A portion of the Search and Discovery teams attended the 2 day Hackathon
and 3 day Wikimania held in Montreal, Canada.

== Discussions ==

=== Search ===
* With some judicious use of thermal paste, we are no longer experiencing
overheating of the ElasticSearch servers in eqiad [0]
* Interleaved search results A/B test was turned on Aug 7th, data was
checked to be good and then turned off on Aug 16. with analysis to follow
[1] [2] [3] [4]
* With David's and Erik's help, enwiki now has their sister project
snippets in a defined order—starting with Wiktionary and ending with
Wikibooks (as search results are available). This was enabled on Aug 16,
2017; all other wikis use the default sorting (by recall) for the ordering
of sister project snippets on the search results page. [5]
* A search relevance MVP test to gather feedback from real humans was
turned on Aug 8, 2017 and will be turned off on Aug 17, 2017 and has early
analysis in the comments section of the epic ticket. [6] [7] [8]

=== Wikidata Query Service ===
* Throttling has been enabled on Wikidata Query Service. This is done to
protect the service from abusive users or bots. WDQS will answer with HTTP
429 if a query is throttled, and will expose a "Retry-After" header to let
you know how much you should wait before retrying a query. The goal is to
protect the service, not to restrict user access, so reach out to us if you
feel that you are being throttled unfairly. [9].
* Stas added a stats marker to wikidata entity search [10]

=== Analysis  ===
* Mikhail has been helping WMDE with figuring out which namespace
combinations are used for searching [11]
* Chelsy fixed a search metrics bug on the dashboard that is used for user
engagement [12]
* Chelsy updated and annotated the sample rate change on the search
dashboard [13]
* Chelsy also updated the search dashboard for the Paulscore calculation
that was summing duplicated clicks on the same position [14]

=== Maps ===
* A community volunteer, TheDJ, fixed a bug in maps where when a user
scrolls, the map detail pane will display incorrect coordinates (greater
than 180°) [15]

[Wikitech-l] TechCom Radar, 2017-08-09 and 2017-08-16

2017-08-18 Thread Daniel Kinzler
Hi all!

So, Wikimania happened! Yay! It was a busy time, lots of things were discussed
and revived. My appologies for not writing a Radar mail for so long - it's so
hard to concentrate when there is so much going on at the conference. So, here
are the minutes from the last TWO weeks' TechCom meeting.

You can also find the minutes at

and
.

See also the TechCom activity page on the RFC board
.

On August 9th, we had our first public TechCom meeting during the Wikimania
Hackathon. Thanks to everyone who participated! Here is what we talked about:

* New RFC: Attribute anonymous contributions to the first IP address used in a
session

* Did NOT approve after last call, more discussion needed: HTML5 section ids

* Input wanted: Allow anonymous recent changes to be filtered by IP range
 (not resourced)

* Media format switching to webm for video (Brion)

* ContentTranslation to use VE, server-side adaptation logic (Roan)

* Progress on raising minimum PHP version for MediaWiki to 5.6/7

* Input wanted: use-cases for delayed job execution

* Active discussion: moving most of MediaWiki within a /core folder

* TechCom to think about QA strategies/guidelines over the coming weeks (code
review, test coverage, etc).

I did not personally attend the Meeting on August 16, since I had an off-site to
attend. Here is what I gathered from the notes:

* LAST CALL for Comments: PostgreSQL schema change for consistency with MySQL
. Should no pertinent objections
remain unaddressed by August 30th, this RFC will be approved for implementation.
Please comment on the ticket.

* Discussion (Roan): want to work on filtering edits by “revertedness”. Could
use change tags, maybe.

* Work started on making MediaWiki core PSR4 compatible. Involves renaming every
class in core!  (Tim)

* Ongoing work on migrating Job Queue to EventBus/Kafka (Gabriel)

* Discussion on how tags may be used in the context of HTML5 section
ID migration (T152540)  (Timo)

* Active discussion: JSON schema validation:

* Active discussion: load multi-file packages via ResourceLoader

PS: Goats are the new kittens
