Re: [Wikitech-l] [Toolserver-l] Amsterdam Hackathon 2013
Hello, We would like to know how to obtain a travel scholarship to Amsterdam Hackathon 2013. We are confused as Wikimedia events are out of scope for participation grant http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Participation_Grants#Wikimedia-organized_events and I read that the GlamCamp Amsterdam 2011 Travel Scholarships was withdrawn *at request of WMF in order that the individual applicants can apply for the new Participation Grants system* * * http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants_talk:WM_NL/GLAMcamp_Amsterdam_travel_scholarships -- Butch Bustria Philippines -- The information contained in this message is privileged and intended only for the recipients named. Re: [Wikitech-l] MediaWiki Event in the Philippines
Thanks for the suggestion Quim and Harsh. We can organize a hangout at any Saturday of our choice (starting Feb 16). Though we are aware of the bountiful of materials available on the web, we are facing a challenge of making it simpler (like infographics) to persons starting to learn mediawiki. When we provide the tutorial links to our potential students, they are overwhelmed. So making it like a typical workshop module (like Session 1, Session 2.. etc) is a good strategy. -- Roman Butch Bustria Jr. Philippines -- The information contained in this message is privileged and intended only for the recipients named. Since our community is in its infancy and there is scarcity of subject matter experts, may we ask your assistance in planning and developing this outreach workshop. Part of the assistance include: 1. Having a resource speaker / guru to train and assist our future local tech trainers This is a good chance for an independent / 3rd party MediaWiki expert. At the Wikimedia Foundation we don't have anybody dedicated to a task like this. Please consider to define a proposal to organize such training in Philippines and get it funded through the appropriate channel at https://meta.wikimedia.org/**wiki/Grants:Start https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Start I don't know if there is a way to get participation support for attending http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/**Amsterdam_Hackathon_2013 http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Amsterdam_Hackathon_2013but that could be another option to get one person of your team well connected with the rest of the community. 2. Creation of a workshop module that include exercises and practice tests As far as I know we don't have (and we would wish to have) a Training landing page pointing to all the useful and up to date resources. There is plenty of materials and wiki pages, but it's not trivial to find them, identify the ones that still valid and relevant and use them coherently through a training program. Then again maybe this is a chance for somebody willing to take this task, and there might be opportunities for granting. NOTE: I'm not involved in any of the grants activities but if someone asks me I will definitely express my support for initiatives improving our documentation and training materials. Depending on the outcome of our plan, we are targeting to have this started this April in time on our Summer break. Summer in the Philippines coincides with Spring in other places in the northern hemisphere. If you move fast you might get a fast response. It won't be easy but you are pointing to a need that I'm sure other locations have as well. By the way, please consider the creation of a MediaWiki Group in your city. Proposing a group is easy and it will help connecting your efforts to the rest of the community. https://www.mediawiki.org/**wiki/Groups https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Groups https://www.mediawiki.org/**wiki/Groups/Proposals https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Groups/Proposals -- Quim Gil Technical Contributor Coordinator @ Wikimedia Foundation http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/**User:Qgil http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Qgil __**_ Wikitech-l mailing list Wikitech-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/**mailman/listinfo/wikitech-l https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikitech-l -- Harsh Kothari Engineering Trainee, Physical Research Laboratory. [Wikitech-l] Offline Sandbox, IP address limit, etc.
Hello Everyone, Good day! When we had our first official out of town outreach project in Naga City, about 300 km south of Manila, we encountered a problem when 50+ students, librarians and professors attempt to create an account with the Bikol Wikipedia. Apparently it only allows 6 applications per IP in 24 hours. Is there a creative way to have not experience the same issue in our future outreach projects? Say one school has one public IP address but many attempt to register? Another, we would like to ask if we can have a possibility to have an client software that can perform to do sandbox editing for those who wants to learn to edit Wikipedia but offline? There will be places we would visit that has computers with no stable internet connection but willing to contribute to Wikipedia. Say edit and export it as xml and then upload that article in Wikipedia in bulk? Your inputs are valuable to us. -- Roman Butch Bustria Jr. Vice President (2012-2013) Wikimedia Philippines Inc. -- The information contained in this message is privileged and intended only for the recipients named. Re: [Wikitech-l] Offline Sandbox, IP address limit, etc.
Thanks for that info. We will do that thing in the future. Hopefully there could be a development of an offline sandbox for Wikipedia starters.
