The original email linked to

While I'm well aware that info a click away is not optimal, I'm definitely
more against walls of text that may be hard to understand for non-native
readers.
That page was marked for translation instead, and among other things, it
offered exactly the process you are describing, and the second email asked
specifically for recommendations.
We had /also/ asked for recs to a few dozens colleagues, and none of the
people pinged gave their availability.
Interested to hear what could have been done differently.)

[Wikitech-l] Maps Modernization plan - FYI

2021-03-22 Thread Erica Litrenta
Greetings,

This is a follow up from our last email some months ago (and a crosspost).
You may already have seen today's announcement from Legal about the
upcoming changes to the Maps Terms of Use. Here is an extra heads-up
that Wikimedia
Maps are transitioning towards a more modern architecture. The first phase
of this transition will be replacing Tilerator [0] with Tegola [1] as our
vector tile server. This is a change in the Maps infrastructure, so there
should be little to no impact to the end users’ experience.

It is important that we are able to provide software that is sustainable to
support, before we can guarantee a reliable user experience. Wikimedia Maps
aim to provide Wikimedia users a consistent experience contributing to and
learning about geoinformation. To achieve this goal, we will empower those
engineers maintaining the Wikimedia Maps infrastructure to do so with ease
and low effort.

If you want to learn more, please head to mediawiki.org [2], where you will
also find a Questions & Answers section.

Thanks, and take care,

Erica Litrenta (on behalf of the Product Infrastructure team)

Re: [Wikitech-l] Public API for Wikimedia map tiles to be discontinued in 45 days [crosspost from Maps-l] [final warning]

2020-10-06 Thread Erica Litrenta
Hi everyone,

Just a reminder that deprecation of the Maps API for third party referrers
happens next week. If you are using that API on a non-Wikimedia hosted
website for a Wikimedia affiliate or an established wikiproject, please
comment as soon as possible on Phabricator [1] linking to your domain and
providing an example of your usage of maps.

We appreciate your patience as this is our first step towards making maps a
reliable and consistent experience for contributors and readers, and we'll
share more about our plans in the next weeks.

2020-09-03 Thread Erica Litrenta

Hi everyone,

here are a few clarifications about our prior announcement re: Maps API
deprecation for 3rd parties [1].

As stated, our plan is *not* going to have any impact on any
Wikimedia-hosted wikis. This means that nothing will change for maps, in
any namespace, on Wikipedia and any sister projects. Tools that are hosted
on Wikimedia services are also not going to be affected (i.e.,
Kartographer).

This said, we are aware that there may be map usage beyond such venues
where deprecation would still affect our community members and their
activities - for instance, the Wiki Loves Monuments website, and the
Wikimedia Poland chapter website both rely on our maps API.

Hence, over the 45 day deprecation period which ends in mid October: *if
you represent an affiliated free knowledge group that does regular work
with our maps (any Wikimedia affiliates, or established wikiprojects), or
if you are closely partnering with other entities who do, we welcome you to
reach out, either here on this announcement thread or on the dedicated
Phabricator ticket [2].*

We will work with you to understand your needs, and what alternatives
exist. For further questions, I encourage you to contact me off-list to
reduce noise.

Thank you.

[Wikitech-l] Fwd: Public API for Wikimedia map tiles to be discontinued in 45 days

2020-08-27 Thread Erica Litrenta
[crosspost from Maps-l]

Today the Wikimedia Foundation is announcing the deprecation of the public
API for Wikimedia map tiles. Around mid October the Foundation will end
support for the Wikimedia Maps Service API [1]. This change affects people
using Wikimedia maps on their own website or app. Maps on the Wikimedia
sites, in Wikimedia-hosted tools and gadgets, and on maps.wikimedia.org
won't be affected.

This decision was made based on recent outage incidents, primarily due to
spikes in third party usage, along with an analysis showing that more than
a third of maps provided are to non-Wikimedia services (including many to
for-profit organizations).

After the most recent incident [2], the service was limited so that only
cached maps tiles would be available. While this protected the servers, it
made the service unpredictable and highlighted the unsustainability of our
tile service. So, we have made the decision to discontinue the maps APIs
for non-Wikimedia users.

This change will allow our teams working on Maps to focus on the
sustainability of the maps used within Wikimedia projects.

You can follow the implementation of this change on Phabricator [3].

Best,

Erica Litrenta

other fellow translators and get support if you need some [6].

Interface messages have the priority. You will need to create an account at
translatewiki.net in order to work on them, if you don't have one. *It is
recommended to create the account ASAP*, so that it can be confirmed in
time.

You can also help translate documentation pages about VisualEditor on
mediawiki.org. You can use your Wikipedia account to work there.
You will find instructions, links and other details on the Translathon page
[1].

Thanks for your attention, and happy translating!

[Wikitech-l] Please join the Making the Wiki Ed dashboard work for outreach projects hackathon session at Wikimania

2015-07-13 Thread Erica Litrenta
TL;DR, Whether you are an amateur or an expert coder, or if you are a
current or interested user of the WikiEduDashboard or of the Education
Extension,* please join us at a hackathon session at Wikimania on
Wednesday, 15 July in Workplace 2 - Don Genaro at 1pm. [0]*

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, the Wikimedia Foundation
developed Extension:EducationProgram. It did what we needed it to do at the
time, which was to provide a tool that helps organize classes that want to
edit Wikipedia articles for course credit. Since its release, the extension
has been deployed to 18 Wikimedia projects: it's on 4 sister projects in 16
languages.

Recently, the Wiki Education Foundation [1], led by project manager Sage
Ross - User:Sage (Wiki Ed), User:Ragesoss - developed a Ruby on Rails app
called the WikiEduDashboard [2], which they will use beginning this fall
instead of the EducationProgram extension, for the university courses that
they support on English Wikipedia.

We believe it is possible to use their freely-licensed code to create a
clone of this dashboard that can be used for non-Wiki Ed education program
courses and other group editing activities on English Wikipedia and,
ultimately, on other Wikimedia projects and in other languages.

We are asking for community support for this project since this is outside
the scope of WMF's engineering team for this year. We see the need for a
global dashboard tool and would love to have your help building it!

We're planning some exciting improvements to the Wiki Education Dashboard,
see Phabricator [3] for the full list.
* Full i18n, including right-to-left support.
* Generalize the UI to work for any wiki project and not only
university courses.
* Integration with the Gather extension, to render lists of articles
being written and reviewed.
* Integration with Campaigns, to track group membership and statistics.
* Improvements to the API to simplify some actions taken from the
Dashboard.
* Potentially using Wikidata as the backend for storing information
about courses and editing projects.

We look forward to working together to build this powerful tool which will
support more education and outreach programs in the movement!

Elitre (WMF),
on behalf of the WMF's Education team, + Andrew Green, Adam Wight, Sage
Ross.

[Wikitech-l] VisualEditor monthly newsletter is now multilingual

2014-11-10 Thread Erica Litrenta
(Apologies for cross-posting.)

Hi all,
I'm glad to announce that the *monthly VisualEditor newsletter* was
recently marked for translation for the first time: we had received several
related community requests.

The issue for September and October [0] was delivered in 10 languages to
the editors who signed up in the past months (please join them! [1]) in
addition to a list of relevant pages which includes at a minimum all the
Wikipedias where VisualEditor is already the default editor [2]. Future
time windows for translations will be announced through the Translators
mailing list [3], or personally to volunteers who want to help with this
task; please contact me off-list to indicate your availability. *The
November issue is now open for translations and will be delivered in a few
days [4]. *

Special thanks to our awesome community of translators, to Guillaume for
assisting me in setting up the whole mechanism, to Whatamidoing (WMF) for
providing the contents and to James F. for reviewing them.

Best,
