[Wikitech-l] Commons app - v4.0 and my resignation

2022-08-25 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi all,

Hope you have been well! We have just released v4.0 of the Commons Android
app to production on Google Play - this version includes tons of new
features (a map displaying nearby Commons pictures, custom SPARQL queries,
user profiles, and a custom picture selector), as well as fixes for major
bugs such as the "date uploaded" bug. The app can be downloaded from the
Play Store[1] or directly from our GitHub repository[2].

I should probably also add that this will likely be my last release - I am
currently transitioning to a new career, and will be stepping down from the
role of project lead, which I have held for the past 6 years. I intend to
stick around on a volunteer basis, but the amount of time that I can put
into the app from now on will be much more limited. I have discussed this
with the app's community, and I believe that a new grant team might be
emerging, and one of the volunteers might step up to take on the project
lead role.

Thank you very much for the support that you have all shown to the Commons
app over the years. It was an honor and a pleasure to work with all of you
- I have learned so much and met so many amazing people in the Wikimedia
community, and I certainly hope to continue being part of it. I also hope
that the app and the community surrounding it may have benefited from my
work here, and that the new team will be able to bring it to places that I
might not have ever foreseen.

Best regards,
Josephine (User: Misaochan)

[Wikitech-l] Commons app v3.1.0 beta release with WLM integration

2021-09-07 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi folks,

Hope you are all safe and well. We have just released v3.1.0 of the Commons
app for beta testing last week, containing basic integration for Wiki Loves
Monuments uploads!

You can find more details about our implementation (and the challenges that
we faced) at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Mobile_app/WLM_release , but the
summary is that WLM pins have been added to our Nearby map, for WLM
monuments. From now until 30 September, people can upload photos of
monuments through this map, and if their country is participating in WLM
2021, the relevant template will be added to these uploads.

Please do help us test this beta version if you can - we hope to release to
production early next week so all users can access it. :)

Many thanks!

Best regards,
Josephine

Nearby places that need photos around that location, and one is found, it
will ask the user "Is this a picture of Place X?"
- Modifications to Nearby filters based on user feedback
- Bug and crash fixes for stuff that got broken by the codebase overhaul

Our next release will likely contain structured data integration, bookmarks
for the Nearby map, and a couple of other new features.

[Wikitech-l] Commons app Android... and iOS!

2020-02-19 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi all,

We (the Commons app team) are hoping to release a Commons iOS app this
year! :) We have received quite a few requests for it, so we have included
it in our Project Grant proposal:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Commons_app/Commons_app_Android_and_iOS
.
Additionally, we are proposing a few new features for the Android app, and
stability/code quality improvements.

If this sounds useful or interesting to you, please do take a look at our
proposal, and endorse it if you see fit. Or if you have any questions or
concerns, please feel free to email me or post in the discussion page.

Thank you so much for all of your encouragement and support. We really
appreciate it!

[Wikitech-l] Commons Android app v2.12

2020-02-01 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi all,

We've just released v2.12 of the Commons app to production on the Play
Store[1]! :) This contains the legacy code overhaul that we've been working
on for the better part of the last year, in order to reduce
difficult-to-debug issues and create a better foundation for stability and
further improvements.

One of the goals in this overhaul is to prevent the issue of failed
uploads which has plagued our users sporadically for years. According to
our beta testers' feedback, this issue has been solved - however, if you
are using v2.12 (can be seen in About page) on a *fresh install* and you
are still experiencing failed uploads, please do let us know so we can take
a look at it. Also, as this version contains the most lines of code changed
compared to any of our other versions, it is possible that there may be a
few teething issues that we are as of yet unaware about, but we will try to
fix any reported issues ASAP.

Also, we have a new feature: Filters for place types and states in Nearby
Places! With this feature, you should be able to filter for (or filter out)
specific types of places that need photos, and also filter out places that
are on Wikidata but don't "exist" anymore.

Thank you all for your support and patience. :)

Best regards,
Josephine / @misaochan (Commons app project maintainer)

[Wikitech-l] Making a cross-wiki authenticated call to Wikidata with Wikimedia Android data client?

2019-09-16 Thread Josephine Lim
Hello,

We have started using the wikimedia-android-data-client library(
https://github.com/wikimedia/wikimedia-android-data-client) to make
mediawiki api calls in the Commons Android app, replacing the legacy
library that we were using previously. Most of the authenticated calls
(i.e. login, upload, nomination for deletion, thank, notifications etc)
made to Commons wiki are working with the new library, but we are stuck
with a cross-wiki call to Wikidata. We are trying to call
`Service:wbcreateclaim` to create a claim on Wikidata but the call is
failing.

We have posted relevant http logs at
https://github.com/wikimedia/wikimedia-android-data-client/issues/21#issue-469284270

We would greatly appreciate it if could take a look at the logs and suggest
what we might be doing wrong. Is it because of some issue with cookies?
Because as far as we can see, as expected we are sending the params in POST
request body with application/x-www-form-urlencoded.

Relevant code:
https://github.com/commons-app/apps-android-commons/blob/backend-overhaul/app/src/main/java/fr/free/nrw/commons/wikidata/WikidataClient.java

Relevant method call: service.postCreateClaim(entityId, snaktype, property,
value, "en", csrfTokenClient getTokenBlocking())

Thank you so much!

Josephine

[Wikitech-l] Commons app update - v2.10, and next steps

2019-03-14 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi all,

Version 2.10 of the Commons Android app has just been released to
production on the Google Play Store[1] (also downloadable on F-Droid[2]).
The update contains:

New features:
- Users can search for (and upload pictures for) places that need pictures
in any location, not just their current location
- Current ongoing campaigns, if any, are displayed on the main screen
- "Retry" button to easily re-upload failed uploads

Fixes:
- Optimized Nearby map loading time
- Fixed various bugs and crashes, including errors with "image taken" date

We're excited to announce that we've also had our recent Project Grant
proposal[3] approved. :) This means there will be lots of improvements
coming up in 2019, with focus on improving stability and the upload
experience for users.

Our first priority will be rewriting the legacy backend code to adhere to
modern standards and reduce complexity (especially the network layer, which
currently uses a deprecated API). This is aimed at resolving a few major
lingering bugs (especially upload failures for a few users), as well as
creating a solid technical foundation to base future improvements on.
Several new features are slated for release after that, including filters
and bookmarks for the "Nearby places that needs pictures" feature, a pause
and resume function for uploads, and a "limited connection" mode.

Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us thus far, especially in
the last rocky year! :) At the conclusion of this grant, we hope to deliver
a much better app to you.

Best regards,
Josephine / @misaochan (project maintainer)

[Wikitech-l] Commons app PG proposal, and v2.9 beta release

2018-11-28 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi folks,

Hope you've all been well! :) We (the Commons app team) are applying for a
Project Grant[1] to fund the development of v3.0 of the Commons Android
app[2]. At the moment, we're approaching completion of our 2nd Individual
Engagement Grant, having implemented several major new features, e.g. a
revamped map of "nearby places that need photos" with direct uploads and
Wikidata integration, user talk notifications, browsing of other Commons
pictures with focus on featured images, and 2FA logins. We currently have
4000+ active installs, and 15,000+ distinct images uploaded via our app
have been used in Wikimedia articles. In the last 6 months alone, 21,241
files were uploaded via our app, and only 1738 (8.2%) of those files
required deletion. We are also proud to report that we have a vibrant,
diverse community of volunteers on our GitHub repository[3], and that we
have increased our global user coverage since our first grant.

It has been a rocky road this year, however. One of the major issues we
faced was that a large portion of our codebase is based on
sparsely-documented legacy code from the very first incarnation of the app
5 years ago (a long time in the Android development world), leading to
unpredictable behavior and bugs. We eventually found ourselves in a
position where new features built on top of legacy code were causing other
features to not work correctly, and even fixes to those problems sometimes
had side effects that caused other problems. (My sincerest apologies to
users for the inconveniences that they were caused!)

In view of that, our Project Grant proposal focuses on these areas:
- Increasing app stability and code quality: We plan to overhaul our legacy
backend to adhere to modern best practices, reduce complexity and
dependencies in our codebase, and introduce test-driven development for the
first time.
- Targeted acquisition of photos for places that need them: The "Nearby
places that need photos" feature has come a long way, but there is still
plenty of room for improvement. We plan to introduce new quality-of-life
features (e.g. by implementing filters and bookmarks) and fix a few
outstanding bugs to make it more user-friendly and convenient to use. We
will also complete the final link in the chain of collecting photos for
Wikipedia articles that lack them by prompting users to add their
recently-uploaded photo to the relevant Wikipedia article.
- Increasing user acquisition in the Global South: We plan to implement a
"limited connectivity" mode, allow pausing and resuming of uploads, and put
more time and effort into outreach and socializing the app, especially to
underrepresented communities.
- We also wish to continue to assist the Commons community to reduce
vandalism and improve usability of images uploaded. This will be done by
implementing selfie detection, and a "to-do" system that reminds users if
an image lacks a description/categories.

Your feedback is important to us! Please do take a look at our proposal[1],
and feel free to let us know what you think on the Discussion page, and/or
endorse the proposal if you see fit. If you would like to be part of the
project, new volunteers and additions to our diverse team are always
welcome - please visit our GitHub repository[3] and say "Hi". :)

Also, we have just released v2.9 for beta testing on the Play Store! \o/
v2.9 features a new main screen UI, a new upload UI with multiple uploads
enabled, and major bugfixes for image dates and the Nearby map default zoom
level. More information and screenshots can be found on our blog[4]. If you
would like to help test the new release, you can sign up for beta testing
here[5].

Finally, we want to thank everyone who has cheered us on and supported us
throughout the years. As a community-maintained app, we wouldn't be here
without you.

Best regards,
Josephine (User:Misaochan), Commons app project maintainer

[Wikitech-l] Commons app update: v2.8.3

2018-09-18 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi all,

We've just released version 2.8.3 of the Commons Android app to all users.
:) The new version is available for download on the Google Play Store[1] as
well as F-Droid[2].

The update includes fixes for most of the high-priority bugs in the app,
including failed uploads and overwrites. Additionally, we have several new
features, notably:

- When you upload an image to an item on the map of "Nearby places that
need pictures", the image will be automatically added to that Wikidata item
- Browse other images on Commons via the new "Explore" feature
- View your achievements and upload statistics (by tapping on the trophy
icon next to your username)

We are aware that there are a few recent issues that need resolving, namely
crashes for users on Android 8.1 and above, and issues with date templates.
Those will be fixed ASAP in v2.9.

Thank you all for your patience as we work on these! More details and
screenshots can be found in my blog post[3]. Feedback, bug reports, and
suggestions are always welcome on our GitHub page[4].

Josephine / misaochan (project maintainer)

Re: [Wikitech-l] Commons app - version 2.7 release

2018-05-02 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi Daniel,

Happy to hear that you like the new features! :)

Re: 2FA logins, that is an interesting question! However, it is not one
that is unique to our app, for if you log in to your 2FA-enabled Wikimedia
account on your mobile phone's browser, both factors can also be on the
same mobile device. ;) Perhaps someone more well-versed in
security/authentication than I am could be better placed to answer that
question.

Point noted re: the CCs, thanks!

Hi zppix e,

We have been wanting to release an iOS app, but it depends entirely on
whether we are able to get an iOS developer on board, either as a volunteer
or paid (if we are able to obtain additional funding). The current team is
unfortunately all Android developers.

Do you know anyone who might be interested? :)

Re: [Wikitech-l] Commons app - version 2.7 release

2018-05-01 Thread Josephine Lim
Sorry about the lack of formatting - I am not sure why that happened. :( To
rephrase, the new features are:

* New "Nearby places that need pictures" UI with direct uploads (and
associated category suggestions)
* Enabled two-factor authentication login
* Enabled viewing of Commons user talk messages
* Real-time location tracking in Nearby
* Improvements to UI of navigation drawer, tutorial, media details view,
login and settings
* Option to nominate picture for deletion in media details view

Best regards,
Josephine

[Wikitech-l] Commons app update: version 2.6

2017-12-24 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi all,

We are delighted to announce that our IEG renewal application for the Commons
app [1] has
been approved! Thank you so much to everyone who supported us – reading
all of the wonderful comments on our proposal has been extremely meaningful
and encouraging for us.

We have been hard at work getting version 2.6 of the app out; there was a
bit of a rocky start with the first few beta iterations, but we finally
have v2.6.5 in production. \o/

Several UI improvements have been made in the current version:

- New login screen
- New design for the list of nearby places that need pictures
- New navigation drawer design with username displayed
- The upload screen has been remodeled to include tooltips for title and
description fields, as well as an explicit copyright declaration and a link
to Commons policies
- Improved media details view with links to the selected license,
categories and image coordinates

Other improvements include:

- Category search - fixed major bugs, improved ordering and filter for
categories
- The "nearby places that need pictures" feature has improved GPS and
refresh handling
- Several privacy improvements - new privacy policy, switched to using
Wikimedia maps server instead of Mapbox, and removed event logging
- Reduced memory leaks and battery usage; fixed multiple other crashes and
bugs
- Various improvements to navigation flow and backstack
- Added option for users to send logs to developers (has to be manually
activated by user)

For more information on the new version, recent screenshots, and
upload/deletion statistics for 2017, please see this blog post
[2].
Feedback, bug reports, and suggestions are always welcome on our GitHub page
[3].

Cheers, and happy holidays. :)

Best regards,
Josephine (@misaochan)

[Wikitech-l] Commons Android app - IEG renewal proposal

2017-07-18 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi folks,

The Wikimedia Commons app [1] (a community-maintained Android app that
allows users to upload photos to Commons from their phone) was funded via
an Individual Engagement Grant [2] last year and has several new features -
a list and map of nearby places that need photos (based on Wikidata),
category suggestions based on the image title, prevention of duplicate
uploads, and a new tutorial to educate new users on what types of photos
should or should not be uploaded. During the grant period, 20554 new files
were uploaded via the app with an overall deletion rate of 15.74% (11.7% in
the final two weeks after the new tutorial was implemented), and 3485
images that were uploaded via the app were used in Wikimedia articles.

While we are very happy with the progress made, there are many other
improvements that we would like to make but were not able to fit into the
scope of the previous grant. Thus we are proposing a renewal [3] of the IEG
in order to work on these. Highlights of the proposed improvements include:

- Enhancing the "Nearby places that need photos" feature by (1) allowing
users to upload their image directly from a location on the list or map,
with suggested title and categories based on the associated Wikidata item,
and (2) displaying the user's real-time position on the map to allow easier
navigation to the location they wish to photograph
- Improving user education by displaying Commons account and user talk
notifications (e.g. picture nominated for deletion) in the app, adding a
gallery of featured images, and adding various notices and explanations in
the upload screen
- A sleeker, more intuitive, and more interactive user interface - a
floating action button for uploads, "Nearby places that need photos" in a
tab alongside the user's contributions, and a panel to display Commons
account notifications and information about the nearest place that needs
photos
- Various technical and quality-of-life improvements, such as two-factor
authentication login, multiple uploads, preventing overwrites, and fixing
memory leaks and battery drain issues

We are especially excited about the "Nearby places that need photos"
enhancements, as we feel that it can help reduce the number of geo-located
Wikidata items that lack pictures, and provide pictures for Wikimedia
articles that lack them. We believe that this is one of our main strengths
as a mobile app - users can have a seamless workflow where they can browse
the places that need photos, select one and move to the location, and then
directly upload the photo after taking it (with relevant titles and
categories suggested), all within the same app and without needing to use a
computer.

Please do take a look at our proposal [3], feel free to provide feedback
and make new suggestions on the Discussion page, and/or endorse the
proposal if you see fit. If you would like to be part of the project, new
volunteers and additions to our diverse team are always welcome - please
visit our GitHub repository [4] and say "Hi". :)

Many thanks!

[Wikitech-l] Commons Android app update - v2.4.2

2017-06-09 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi all,

We're excited to announce that we've rolled out several new features and
bug fixes for the Commons Android app[1] over the past few months. Some of
the major ones include:

- A map of nearby places that need pictures (in addition to the existing
list). Selecting a nearby place allows users to see the associated Wikidata
item, get directions to the place, or view the associated Wikipedia article
- A new and improved UI, including a light and dark theme, a navigation
drawer, and a logout option
- Fixed memory issues preventing users with older phones from accessing the
app
- Licenses now include CC-BY 4.0 and CC-BY-SA 4.0, and licenses can be
selected individually when uploading a picture
- The total number of pictures that have been uploaded from an account are
now shown, and the image details pane now displays the upload date and
image coordinates

Thank you for your support and encouragement though all this time!
Feedback, bug reports, and suggestions are always welcome on our GitHub
page[2]. :)

[Wikitech-l] Commons app (Android) update - v1.41

2016-12-14 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi all,

We're excited to announce that we've rolled out several updates and
bugfixes for the Commons Android app[1] over the past couple of months.
Some of the major ones include:

- Automatic addition of geocoding template if uploaded image is geotagged
- Category suggestions based on the title entered for the image
- New, more detailed tutorial to educate new contributors on what types of
images should or should not be uploaded (special thanks to Pine for sharing
his Commons educational script which was used as the basis for this)
- Check for whether or not the file already exists on Commons, to prevent
upload of duplicates

Additionally, the kind folks at translatewiki.net are helping us set up a
translation project for our app, so hopefully localization should improve
in the near future.

Thank you all for your support and encouragement thus far! Feedback, bug
reports, and suggestions are always welcome on our GitHub page[2]. :)

[Wikitech-l] Wikimedia Commons Android app update - new feature

2016-09-04 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi all,

I've been working on improving the Wikimedia Commons Android app[1] for the
past couple of months. In addition to several bugfixes and minor
improvements, we've just rolled out a new feature - a list of nearby places
that need photos!

This feature pulls locations without photos from a file maintained by the
Wiki Needs Pictures[2] project and arranges them in order of proximity to
the user's position. Tapping on an item in the list brings the user to
their phone's map app with the coordinates pinned. To access this feature,
select 'Nearby' (or the icon of a guy with a flag) from the action bar
(menu) of the app.

The current implementation is a very basic/bare-bones version, as we want
to gauge users' response and feedback before working on any enhancements.
So please do try it out, see how it works for you, and feel free to report
any bugs or suggest any enhancements on our Google Group forums[3] or
GitHub issues page[4].

Please note that you will need to allow the app to access your location in
order for this feature to work. Also, as the list is rather large, initial
loading might take a while.

Thanks!

[Wikitech-l] Update: Upload to Commons Android app

2016-06-19 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi all,

A quick update re: the Upload to Commons Android app:

- We are now considered an 'official' app and have been granted permission
by WMF to use the Wikimedia Commons logo and name. As such, the app is now
named "Wikimedia Commons" <
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fr.free.nrw.commons> instead
of "Upload to Commons", and its icon has been changed to the Commons logo.
Ownership of the app should also soon be transferred to the WMF Google Play
account. On a practical basis, there should be no change in the use of the
app and it will still be maintained by volunteers.

- I am happy to announce that my IEG proposal for further work on the app <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Improve_%27Upload_to_Commons%27_Android_App>
has been selected. :) I will be starting work on it shortly, so there will
be regular releases planned for the next 6 months. Bug/crash reports and
feedback are welcome on our Google Groups forums <
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/commons-app-android> and GitHub
page as
always.

Have a great day!

Cheers,

[Wikitech-l] IEG proposal: Improve Upload to Commons Android app

2016-03-03 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi folks,

I've been working on the Upload to Commons Android app[1] for the past few
months as an Outreachy project (which was recently completed
successfully[2] :)). A few changes were made to the app to make
categorization of pictures easier, via suggestion of nearby categories and
more flexible category search. However, there are lots of improvements
(documented on our GitHub page[3]) that we couldn't fit into the scope of
the Outreachy project. I would love to be able to continue working on the
app to improve it further - hence an IEG proposal.

My IEG proposal for the app involves:
- Fixing long-standing bugs and looking into old crash reports to try and
prevent them from recurring, to provide a smoother user experience
- Making several enhancements to the app to make it more user-friendly and
newbie-friendly, new location-based features (e.g. a list of nearby
articles lacking pictures), and further enhancing categorization.
- Increasing awareness of non-Wikimedians about this app to grow the
contributor base

Several of the proposed features are based on previous suggestions by
users, and I would very much appreciate more feedback and suggestions! If
you are interested, please do take a look at the current proposal[4], feel
free to ask questions and make new suggestions on the Discussion page, and
review it as you see fit. If you would like to be part of the project,
volunteers and additional advisors are always welcome.

Thank you so much!

[Wikitech-l] Update on Upload to Commons Android App project

2016-02-16 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi all,
I've been working on a project to improve the categorization of
pictures in the Upload to Commons Android app
 as part of the Outreachy
Dec '15 program, which is soon drawing to an end. To summarize, 3 new
features have been implemented in this app:

1. If a picture with geolocation is uploaded, nearby category
suggestions are offered (based on the categories of other Commons
images with similar coordinates)

2. If a picture with no geolocation is uploaded, nearby category
suggestions are offered based on the user's current location. This is
optional and only works if enabled in Settings.

3. Category search (when typing in the search field) has been made
more flexible, whereas previously this was done solely by prefix
search. E.g. now searching for 'latte' should be able to return 'iced
latte'.

[Wikitech-l] (no subject)

3. Category search (when typing in the search field) has been made
more flexible, whereas previously this was done solely by prefix
search. E.g. now searching for 'latte' should be able to return 'iced
latte'.

The latest version of the app is v1.11 and can be downloaded at
.
Please feel free to leave feedback or bug reports at

that the WMF community has given me. :)

Cheers!

[Wikitech-l] (Update) Improving categorization in Upload to Commons Android App

2016-01-12 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi,

I have been working on a project to improve the categorization of pictures
in the Upload to Commons Android app <
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T115101> as part of the Outreachy Dec '15
program, and I am happy to announce that Phase 1 of the project has been
implemented. :) The app should now suggest nearby categories when a picture
is uploaded.

Feedback on this feature would be greatly appreciated, so please feel free
to download the updated version of the app <
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fr.free.nrw.commons> and to
post feedback/issues on the GitHub page <
https://github.com/nicolas-raoul/apps-android-commons/issues/new>.

Please note that to use this new feature, you will need to have location
tagging enabled for your camera.

Thanks!

Edit: Uh, whoops, my bad, very sorry. The source code and issues are
primarily stored at https://github.com/nicolas-raoul/apps-android-commons -
the other GitHub page that I linked is mine and is not currently used for
discussion of issues.

[Wikitech-l] Improving categorization in Upload to Commons Android App

2015-11-20 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi,

I'm working on a project to improve the categorization of pictures in the
Upload to Commons Android app
with Nicolas_Raoul and Niedzielski as part of the Outreachy Dec '15
program. I'm very much just starting out, so I'd love any feedback or
suggestions that anyone might have.

We are planning on two major phases/releases for app updates, with Phase 1
enabling category suggestions based on the picture's location, and Phase 2
enabling more flexible category search results. It would be a huge help if
we had some volunteers to test these releases (planned for Jan and Feb
respectively), so it would be great if anyone could download the app <
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fr.free.nrw.commons> and try
it out. The source code and issues are stored on GitHub <
https://github.com/misaochan/apps-android-commons>.

Many thanks! :)

[Wikitech-l] Mentor needed for Outreachy project (Upload to Commons Android app development)

2015-10-04 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi,

I'm Josephine, an Outreachy applicant who's hoping to work on the Upload to
Commons Android app project -
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T114358#1701261

With the guidance of Nicolas_Raoul (co-mentor for this project), I have
started contributing to the app on GitHub and have completed the microtask.
However, we are still needing one more mentor for this project.

If anyone is willing to help out as a mentor or point me to someone who
would, I'd hugely appreciate it.
