Am I correct in reading that both of these new boards will require v3 of
the OS? I have yet to see a stable, production worthy v3 release. :(

Re: [WISPA] Ohio State-wide broadband network

2007-08-03 Thread Zack Kneisley
I have lived in Ohio all my life and I believe I know of most of all of the
longhaul fiber that exists between cities. I'm sure there are some networks
I don't know about, but there has been a lot of money poured into a few
unlicensed wireless links that I have been involved with for a particular
governmant agency. This agency, if any, would have access to any governmant
fiber and said there wasn't any available.

If anyone would like to disprove me, please do, It would open up a lot more
possibilities.

have un-used fiber capacity and therefore seeking ways
of generating revenue. Such is the case with quasi
goverment fiber too. For example, I believe NOAA-NET
seeking to promote space and sell fiber services to
other providers. (at least that is what I heard two
years ago in the Pacific Northwest??)

The 192 (I don't think I've ever needed nine Ethernet ports on one
board) is a MIPS chip, the same as the Routerboard 500s, so in theory it
should work. I'm not Mikrotik, so I can't confirm this, but it SHOULD
work...

The 333 is listed as running on a PPC chip, which isn't supported by any
older version of RouterOS.

Didn't the RouterBoard 500s have the same problem at release (where they
were only supported by the still-beta RouterOS 2.9 software)?

Re: [WISPA] Google: Wireless Internet - What to Sell?

2007-08-03 Thread Jeromie Reeves
None taken. Our markets and delivered services are likely very
different. Currently we do not profit that much (3 digits) from our
users so its hard to pay that much. As others stated it would have to
be for installed users only, not just the lead. Also, what about
people who come to us and turn it down, but come back in 6 months, a
year, 18 months? Does the bounty stand or is there a time limit? The
main reason I am interested is so that I keep ahead of others in the
area, evdo being one of them since Version just spent a lot of money
on new towers out here. If only there was whole sale access to evdo so
I could sell my own service via its last mile and bundle it with my
current offerings.

Personally (no offense Marlon or Jeromie) I would even be willing to pay a
lot more for a referral, even in the 3 digits, as long as it was a fair
payout for a contract customer. Customer acquisition and retention is one of
the most important aspects of the game.

I think it even might be possible to get residual income as long as it's
fair. I don't mind handing out money, as long we both make money.

Mike:

As soon as you are actually providing Broadband Wireless Internet
Access service, I'd be happy to list you at
http://www.bwiaserviceproviders.com.

Same offer to all other Broadband Wireless Internet Access Service
Providers on this list. You don't have to be a member of WISPA (or
Part-15.Org, or WCA, or ...) to be listed - just be an actual provider
of Broadband Wireless Internet Access.

If you'd like to be listed - send me an email OFF LIST.

As for criteria for entities already on the list - I add listings as I
encounter them from all KINDS of sources, so don't take offense if
you're not already on the list (or undue pleasure if you already are
on the list.)

Thanks,

Steve

I would never pay recurring commissions. I do not know if I would pay for a
lead from a Google map system unless it was pre-qualified as being someone
who really does want the service. Sometimes people just browse to see
what's out there.

I really do wish people such as yourself would join us as a vendor member

I actually got a call from these guys. The marketing company is about 30
minutes away so Ia sked if I could stop by there office some time. They
said sure and gave me an address. Seems their office is located at a
residence. The funny thing about it is that this marketing company jsut
represtens the actual Wireless Corporation and they are the ones with all
the funding. But they can not disclose that companies name. How odd is
that?I thought about driving over there one day and taking a look if I
ever get a day to waste.

Had a group down here in Sarasota making similar claims. All BS. You can
put lipstick on a turd and it's still a turd. People want to believe,
they

were in a small town north of here and convinced about 10 people to write
them each 25,000 checks.

The next day one of our old employees got word of this, got everyone
together that had given them money and got their checks back under the
agreement that they would give them the money if they would meet with us
and

we felt like they had some legs.

You know the rest of the story. Never showed up, never called.. But all
of

these guys got their money back.

say

it will cut through trees up to 16 to 20 miles in mountain terain. And
they are selling T1s for $19.95 and T3s for $70-$80 with no setup,
installation, or equipment costs.. And I get a whole $3 for for each
customer I sign up. They also claim to be able to sell T2 and T3 service
also. They claim to have 3 licenesed frequencies but will not disclose

Sounds like a bunch of BS to me. Lots of marketing fluff and no facts.

 Hi Jory,
Tuesday, July 31, 2007

Hopefully you haven't forgotten me since a lot of water has passed
under the bridge since I last communicated with you regarding the T-1 to
T-3

level mobile wireless Internet service that is soon to be launched on the
world.

Well, you may have thought that we went away but it was only a
temporary delay. First of all I want to apologize to you for the early
notification that turned out to be a false summit. We had felt that
launch
was eminent when we sent out the cards late last year. The setback was
only
temporary though and we are finally emerging from the quiet time and able
to

share what is going on with everyone.

I have included the last 7 months of short notes from ItsYourNet CEO
Ken Stewart to catch you up on where are are and what can be expected in
the
next few months. I don't have any information other than what comes out
in

these news briefs so just stay tuned for further developments.

January 4: From ItsYourNet CEO Ken Stewart...

The questions are still coming in about the Wireless Internet project
and Stock in the Corporation since I released the last newsletter
announcing

the orders we are under with the Quiet Time on Thursday, December 22,
2006.

 So...
 Let me say this again...
We are under strict orders to not say anything further about the
Wireless project until authorized to do so.

And as a result, these questions need to stop coming in to our
support

channels - Thank you!

Furthermore, with a $13-Billion investor, no Seed or Preferred Stock
needs to be offered and no other investment capital needs to be sought, so
sale of Stock is not required to raise the money needed to launch the
project.

What you do and will receive as an Affiliate with ItsYourNet is
notification of the Stock being made available to the public before you
can

learn about it going live anywhere else.

We will let you know when the Stock is live for public purchase even
before your Broker calls you to recommend buying it, but that is all we
can
do; ItsYourNet does not own the Wireless Company, and even I personally
have

no way to obtain Stock before it is available publicly.

April 26: from ItsYourNet CEO, Ken Stewart...

The Wireless Corporation CEO, Mr. Gary Brown, met with us here at
ItsYourNet's office last Tuesday and shared some wonderful new
developments

that we've been authorized to pass on to you.

You might also look at a proprietary PoE solution, or maybe regular 48v PoE
with a DC-DC (48v to 12v) convertor on the end. You could also look a
solar.

FWIW, there is a 60 watt injector available (Mfg Part #: TR60A-POE-L) :

Hi,

Now you are understanding what the rest of us have been going thru for
the past couple of years. ;)

The RB532 is underpowered for big backhaul links, yet any of the
mini-itx or micro-itx boards need 120VAC or a seperate power cable and a
power converter inside the box. Running LMR cable works for short runs
(20-30ft), but after that it just limits the signal too much.

What we really need is an 800mhz Routerboard in the same form factor as
the current RB532. :)

I have been doing some research and these seem great, almost. The main

I could easily use one of these units or a standard PC. Most of my
sights are on water towers so there is no electricity at the top of
them and the radio ahs to be feed with PoE. I have tried putting the
radios lower and using LMR cableis to the antennas but have had bad
experiences with that in the past.

Just get something fanless and low-power, and you're good. I usually
suggest fanless because you can get the whole No Moving Parts
assembly, which means fewer things that can break; the benefit of that
should be obvious :) Low-power is optional, but usually goes along
with fanless, because otherwise your computer could cook itself.

The biggest downside is probably the some assembly required bit -
you're basically buying all the parts for a small desktop computer,
and assembling them yourself. There's a bit of learning curve even if
you've worked with desktop PCs before (those power supplies especially
are tiny, and can be annoying to work with). Your first system will
probably take an hour or two to assemble.

It will be a bit bigger than a Routerboard 500 - probably six inches
square, two or three inches tall. And you'll need real power, as you
can't usually run these with POE.

RouterOS is available for standard x86 hardware, which most mini-ITX
boards would be.

You may also want to look at the new Soekris 5501. I haven't tested
RouterOS on it, but Soekris is standard x86 hardware, so problems are
pretty unlikely. It's a single-board unit, so you don't have to
assemble anything; you'll be getting a bit less performance at about
the same price, but you don't have to spend an hour putting bits
together.

mini-box.com has a good selection of bits and pieces; I've bought from
them before and they took good care of me.

For me, it depends on the account of the person doing the referral.
Relays get a monthly per connected user, till their service is free,
after that they get nothing. Plain referrals get a one time credit.
Both are done as credits in the next billing cycle. The main issue I
see is how to handle people that look to be a bad risk. A contract is
worthless with some clients so I do everything monthly. I keep
ownership of the hardware and they sign and AUP and TOS that states
they are responsible for its safe keep and return. So far no issues
with people running off but it is coming, as is dead beat payers. With
the referral structure I use people do not refer a disreputable
person.

Re: [WISPA] Google: Wireless Internet - What to Sell?

2007-08-03 Thread Travis Johnson
One of my competitors is paying $10/month commission to anyone that
signs up customers for him. His packages start at $24.95/month for up to
1.5meg and $34.95/month for 4meg down/1meg up. He is using Canopy, with
a free install. I wonder how long this one will last... in the past 10
years, we have seen 5 other wireless companies come to the area... and
today they are all out of business.

One time fee.

If you want a recuring fee I could go for that. It'll be in the $.25

[WISPA] fcc committee survey

2007-08-03 Thread Marlon K. Schafer (509) 982-2181

Hi All,

The FCC Committee would like to know your top few issues (3 to 5) that you'd
like us to PROACTIVELY work on. Things, mainly, that you'd like us to try
to create movement on.

Examples might be:

Certified components vs. certified systems.

Drop the 6' antenna requirement for 6 gig.

Expand USF to include broadband services.

?

thanks,

I to would be interested in such a referral program. Spot checking is
a great idea and could worked right into the referral form by asking
them to update them on the status with a email in 60 ~90 days. My
referrals and relay hosts shake out to the same price, $5 per user or
customer signup. A few of the referrals come out to $10 (free service
as right now i have spare bw), both are credits on the next bill.

Re: [WISPA] Ohio State-wide broadband network

2007-08-03 Thread Dave Hannum
Zack,

The Ohio Super Computer Center has OSCNet - a network of fiber optic cable
around the state. They are trying to expand this program to put a fiber
drop in each county that will be available to both public and private last
milers. This thing has an enormous capacity - all but a hand full of the
state colleges and universities operate of this thing, and I believe they
said only about 1/16th of it's capacity is being utilized at this time.

A fellow by the name of Kim Peters in Morgan county is very familiar with
this project. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [WISPA] Google: Wireless Internet - What to Sell?

2007-08-03 Thread Jeromie Reeves
For me, it depends on the account of the person doing the referral.
Relays get a monthly per connected user, till their service is free,
after that they get nothing. Plain referrals get a one time credit.
Both are done as credits in the next billing cycle. The main issue I
see is how to handle people that look to be a bad risk. A contract is
worthless with some clients so I do everything monthly. I keep
ownership of the hardware and they sign and AUP and TOS that states
they are responsible for its safe keep and return. So far no issues
with people running off but it is coming, as is dead beat payers. With
the referral structure I use people do not refer a disreputable
person.

As soon as you are actually providing Broadband Wireless Internet

Same offer to all other Broadband Wireless Internet Access Service
Providers on this list. You don't have to be a member of WISPA (or

of Broadband Wireless Internet Access.

If you'd like to be listed - send me an email OFF LIST.

As for criteria for entities already on the list - I add listings as I
encounter them from all KINDS of sources, so don't take offense if
you're not already on the list (or undue pleasure if you already are

Had a group down here in Sarasota making similar claims. All BS. You can
put lipstick on a turd and it's still a turd. People want to believe, they
were in a small town north of here and convinced about 10 people to write
them each 25,000 checks.

The next day one of our old employees got word of this, got everyone
together that had given them money and got their checks back under the
agreement that they would give them the money if they would meet with us and
we felt like they had some legs.

You know the rest of the story. Never showed up, never called.. But all of
these guys got their money back.

  Hi Jory,
Tuesday, July 31, 2007

Hopefully you haven't forgotten me since a lot of water has passed
under the bridge since I last communicated with you regarding the T-1 to T-3
level mobile wireless Internet service that is soon to be launched on the
world.

Well, you may have thought that we went away but it was only a
temporary delay. First of all I want to apologize to you for the early
notification that turned out to be a false summit. We had felt that launch
was eminent when we sent out the cards late last year. The setback was only
temporary though and we are finally emerging from the quiet time and able to
share what is going on with everyone.

I have included the last 7 months of short notes from ItsYourNet CEO
Ken Stewart to catch you up on where are are and what can be expected in the
next few months. I don't have any information other than what comes out in
these news briefs so just stay tuned for further developments.

January 4: From ItsYourNet CEO Ken Stewart...

The questions are still coming in about the Wireless Internet project
and Stock in the Corporation since I released the last newsletter announcing
the orders we are under with the Quiet Time on Thursday, December 22,
2006.

  So...
  Let me say this again...
We are under strict orders to not say anything further about the
Wireless project until authorized to do so.

And as a result, these questions need to stop coming in to our support
channels - Thank you!

Furthermore, with a $13-Billion investor, no Seed or Preferred Stock
needs to be offered and no other investment capital needs to be sought, so
sale of Stock is not required to raise the money needed to launch the
project.

What you do and will receive as an Affiliate with ItsYourNet is
notification of the Stock being made available to the public before you can
learn about it going live anywhere else.

We will let you know when the Stock is live for public purchase even
before your Broker calls you to recommend buying it, but that is all we can
do; ItsYourNet does not own the Wireless Company, and even I personally have
no way to obtain Stock before it is available publicly.

April 26: from ItsYourNet CEO, Ken Stewart...

The Wireless Corporation CEO, Mr. Gary Brown, met with us here at
ItsYourNet's office last Tuesday and shared some wonderful new developments
that we've been authorized to pass on to you.

The latest on the CPU / chip development is that there are now just
two (2) chip manufacturers remaining in the bidding process for the mass
production of the chip required to run the Wireless systems.

Although we're not yet authorized to disclose the name of these two
manufacturers, we expect by the next Newsletter release on May 10, 2007 that
we should be able to provide a solid time-frame for the prototype chips to
be created, and, thus project a solid time-frame for the mountainous terrain
testing.

Further developments and news Gary offered is that the Wireless
services are going to be going global much faster than originally planned!
Due to recent business connections made, shortly after the North American
Wireless service is introduced, China will be opened up!

To make the connectors; I use four tools;

1 small Cresent wrench
1 box wrench
1 box cutter
1 small butane power soilder tip

A whopping $3.00 woth of tools.

I only use amphenol brand connectors. There is really no need to buy an
expensive dipole solidering forceps; unless you will have another use
for such an expensive piece of equipment. Other than that it is the
basics... Read the cutback measurements for your connectors and you will
not have a problem.

I am familiar with this network. Trying to expand, and making it available
are still the 2 things that have not happened. Also, in my neck of the
woods, it is still 40 miles to the nearest POP. The terrain that is between
myself and that pop would take multiple wireless hops. I once did a wireless
study to that general area and it would take between 4-6 hops using 300ft
towers.

I think it even might be possible to get residual income as long as it's

For what is worth, I believe that the USF ALREADY includes broadband
services.

My understanding is that in order to qualify for USF funding for your
broadband services, you must also be conducting business as a ILEC or CLEC
in that service area. In other words, telephone companies that service
rural area can draw USF funds in order to pay for broadband deployments.
However, non-telephone companies cannot tap those same funds to provide
broadband services.

Re: [WISPA] Google: Wireless Internet - What to Sell?

2007-08-03 Thread Zack Kneisley
Scriv,
I can see where you are coming from, but is this not an open list? I think
that denying a person advice based on their business structure is a bit
rude. I'm not sure how this would come across to Robert, but I know how it
would come across to me.
Business research is done everyday by doing exactly what Robert is doing,
asking questions. Yes, I have a chip on my shoulder to the fact their
company is making money off of bringing customers to Verizon, but he would
do that if he came here for advice or not. I see this as an opportunity to
relate what the services the WISPS on this list provide to someone that only
has the experience with Verizon. I see this as an opportunity to possibly
bring a customer or 2 to me, nothing more. I am willing to pay for a
customer. I't called acquisition costs. Weather its in the cost to keep a
customer happy so you get the word out that you have good service or a
couple greebacks, the outcome is the same, I want a customer that generates
revenue. Sure network condition, price, population density, and market have
just as much to do with it, but are only small parts of a larger plan.

I have many times thought It would be nice to have a small display in radio
shack like all the cell providers do. Well, Isn't quite the case but it
can, potentially, be a source of potential customers that costs me nothing
up front, nothing to setup, and could provide me with a customer. The
details are just important. Residual, bounty, lead, whatever the case may
be, I'm sure that we could come to terms with an arrangement that bennifits
myself, Robert, and my newly acquired customer. If its residual, they could
be paid a % if and only if the customer pays their bill. No risk there. If
it's bounty, then I would pay after a set # of months of a current account,
if it were for a lead, then I would have to say let it be web based and let
the server app to take care of the lead customer potential payout, still
if only they become a paying customer.

These are just what I can think of off the top of my head. I would put it up
to Robert to figure out and draft the plan. If I like it ok... If not, no
harm done to me. This is why I don't feel he should be bashed and ask for a
vendor membership, if they were to want to do something through WISPA, as
involving WISPA in the process, sure maybe then WISPA does deserve a fair
share, but at this point, I don't see how that would be fair, as the only
thing Robert is using of WISPA is the forum, which is open to anyone, right.
When he decides it's worth his money to invest in a $500.00 a month ad
through WISPA because it makes sense to his company, then can he ask
questions?

BTW, RObert, I would be happy to talk to you about setting up a WISP referal
system, not just for me, but for any wisp out there, I would be happy to
help with the technical side of things and the actual lead, bounty, referal
structure, all worked into 1 seamless system that would benefit all WISPS
that would like to be involved.free, free for my help and to involve any
WISP- free.

Being able to mix-n-match parts to make it work HERE is my biggest issue!

Re: [WISPA] fcc committee survey

2007-08-03 Thread Jeromie Reeves
I was going to offlist this, but, I might as well put my foot where my mouth is.

In my opinion the top things I want addressed would be:

I would like to see a WISP License like a Ham License. Its very simple
in idea but I think it would truly change the industry. Any one
wanting to be a wisp would get access to what ever spectrum can be
pulled from the FCC, including all the bands available right now. The
license would allow us to produce gear in the same way a ham can
solder up a radio and be legal. The test would need to include a lot
of things the ham tests do, a lot of things that the CWNP. All
installers would need to be certified if they assemble the unit, else,
the assembler will need to be. They will need ot put their license #
on the unit as well as a unit number or such. That unit number+license
will need to be filed with the fcc, but not its location of operation,
or, nothing more specific then the county/city it operates in. This
has the side effect of giving the FCC some hard numbers with out
giving away personal company information. This would be best as a
retroactive ruling with grace on old installs. I am not trying to be
political but if they can give grace to illegal aliens then they can
to wisps too, both are breaking the law and both are being productive
so both should get the same treatment.

Clearer component cert: IE, what/why is there a difference from a
embedded board to a PC or laptop. Laptops ship with built in antennas
but no way are all certified mini pci cards tested with that antenna.
I would like to see very clear rulings on matching parts. Part of the
same, I would like to the allowance of changing cables with out
breaking cert.

Abandon the USF, or at least reform it drastically. That rural telcos
should not get away with cherry picking while getting USF (I know
Qwest is doing this too, just picked up a dozen people they will not
serve) but its my local that upsets me the most with it.

I want dry line tariffs reinstated and enforced. Both Qwest and my
local rural telco refuse to sell copper on the grounds they do not
have to. I think its stupid that a copper company will not sell
copper. Personally I would break the physical company off from the
services company, but I know I am dreaming. VZ was at least honest and
said they did not want to and so would not. VZ is abandoning copper as
fast as they can, so lets make them sell it to some one and not rip it
out of the ground. If nothing else it should become city property for
them to lease to anyone at the same rates.

I hate it when someone says me too, but...me too. ;-)

A lot of the things the FCC has are just silly... like PC with wireless vs.
our stuff. Why a HAM can take a test any joke can pass and then manufacture
gear himself, but we cannot use piece-it-together gear. I don't care so
much about the telco network. If we get all of the other things we want
(heck, even a subset) on the wireless side, the telco is irrelevant.

I would never pay recurring commissions. I do not know if I would pay
for a lead from a Google map system unless it was pre-qualified as
being someone who really does want the service. Sometimes people just
browse to see what's out there.

I really do wish people such as yourself would join us as a vendor
member since it is obvious you stand to gain significantly by
accessing the hundreds of operators who use our list by selling your
wares to them. The address is http://signup.wispa.org. We appreciate
what you are doing here but let's face it, you plan to sell us
qualified leads if I am reading your intent. So why not be a vendor
or stop using us as your sounding board?

Scriv,
I can see where you are coming from, but is this not an open list?

You bet it is open. Thanks to people who pay the dues and donate their
time to keep it that way.

 I think
that denying a person advice based on their business structure is a bit
rude. I'm not sure how this would come across to Robert, but I know how it
would come across to me.

What did I deny this guy? I consider it rude to use open list resources
as a place to build market data on our industry without throwing a
little money in the kitty. I pay my dues, year in and year out, I donate
my time. So if people want to use this list to develop a new business
model that includes making money from the WISPs who are on here then all
I am saying is that it is rude to not throw some money our way and
show you support our industry. How is what this guy is doing with his
number one placement Google ad bot any different than someone trying
to sell you or me a better access point or something? We would not allow
that without being a vendor here. I guess the real issue I have about
your argument here is that this list is open and I should be allowed to
explain why I think he should pay a vendor dues payment just as freely
as you are to say I am rude.

I am not telling Robert he cannot do what he is doing. I just think it
would be better for him to formalize his relationship with WISPA if he
is intending to use our resources to market to our membership here. That
is what we ask of any other vendor.

Re: [WISPA] What are your customers worth?

2007-08-03 Thread Pete Davis
The valuation of WISP user vs Cell user are a little funky. These
numbers came off the top of my head and may not be anywhere near
resembling reality. I am basing them on what I have made/lost in the
WISP business in the past 5 years, and what I have spent/seen others
spend on cell phone service for the past 10 years. Some of these numbers
are purely speculative. .

Typical wisp user revenue: $40/mo - $100/mo
Typical wireless phone user revenue: $79/mo - $199/mo

Typical install/CPE: take a $150-$200 loss on truck roll, CPE costs,
labor, etc
Typical cell phone sale/contract: make $100-$200 and give customer a
free car charger than costs you $0.99 in bulk. NO TRUCK ROLLS

Typical WISP customer problem: $50 truck roll + CPE replacement, cable
re-run, POE replacement, 2 hr troubleshooting, etc
Typical cell cust prob: sell them a new phone. Make $100, and make them
come in to buy it.

Typical WISP user cancellation: Pay a tech $50 to go by and uninstall
the CPE

Typical cell cancellation: CHARGE THEM $200/line to CANCEL

Typical WISP customer install with bad credit: Be a nice guy, let them
pay out the $200 install over 4 months, never collect anything but the
first $50 and get screwed on the rest
Typical cell with bad credt: Make them put down a $500 deposit, or get
on a pay-as-you-go plan where they pay $0.20/min vs $0.05/min x 2000 min/mo.

Typical WISP customer: unlimited email, unlimited downloads, unlimited
uploads, unlimited P2P, unlimited complaining if a speed test ever shows
1/bit/sec slower than advertised speed.
Typical cell user: $0.05/sms text message, $0.10/bit for downloading
crap, $0.99/ea to download ringers. Drop the call/lose the ringer, etc.
too bad.. try it again

Typical WISP AP: rent the tower for $0-$500/mo and put up a $1000 AP for
40 to 100 subs Tower costs of $5/mo/sub roughly.
Typical Cell tower: rent the land for $500/mo, build the tower/equipment
for $90k, support 1000+ subs Amortize $90k for 10 years at $750/mo +
interest, so the tower costs $12/mo/sub roughly.

Now, with that said, do you want to buy a WISP, or do you want to buy a
cell phone company?

Put another cell carrier on the tower and you can add
another 200K or more to the value of the tower.

IE, if you have a cellular carrier on your tower, and
want to sell, you can expect 8 -9 -10 times yearly
revenue, or in some cases even more if you want to
sell that tower. (Yep, I'm buying!)

Even at the low end of valuation, with just 100 of
their towers having a co-locator (And that is a low
number for them) thats another 14.5 million
dollars of value to Verizon.

15 to 25 percent of the total value of the deal may be
coming from other income sources.

This astounds me. Read the dollar amounts and customer counts below:

Verizon agrees to buy Rural Cellular
http://r.smartbrief.com/resp/hCfcixdgyzwWwZCibGluwtpU?format=standard
Verizon Wireless is snapping up Rural Cellular in a deal valued at $2.67
billion. The deal will boost Verizon's subscriber numbers by more than
700,000. The Washington Post/Reuters

A bit of quick math says that they are paying over $3,000.00 per
customer for this company. Obviously WISPs are not able to command such
valuations but it is interesting to see what the bigger guys will value
top end wireless companies

Re: [WISPA] What are your customers worth?

2007-08-03 Thread Travis Johnson
Those are some very good comparisons... if taken very lightly in the
manner you intended... but to look at some real numbers...

My local cell phone company just announced a $59/month unlimited minutes
plan. You can then get unlimited SMS, web, pictures, etc. for like
another $35/month if you want. $0 for the phone, 2 year contract, no
setup fee. They are in debt with every new customer for at least the
first few months (phone, sales commissions, overhead, etc.)

In my current coverage area, we have a total of 60 towers. They have 105
towers in that same area. Mine each cost me less than $5k for
everything, while they spend around $50k average per tower.

Their tower techs (not climbers, just the techs) each have new trucks,
and make $50k a year salary. My installers make $30k a year, and that is
paid from the install fee we charge so they don't cost me anything. They
have to use certified tower climbers that get paid $50/hour from the
time they leave the office until they get back. We climb our own towers.

Their main voice switch cost them almost $2 million about a year ago. My
entire NOC (including hosting servers, routers, fiber, etc.) would cost
me less than $100k to replace today.

I have two offices... they have over 20 offices (not just agents or
authorized dealers, actual offices owned by the corporation) with 10+
people in each office. This is just in my small corner of Idaho.

So the real question is, are the cell phone companies _really_ making
any money, or are they just going farther and farther into debt to
produce a quarterly PL that looks good on paper? How do you spend $2
million on a switch that will have to be upgraded in 3-5 years?

Oh, and let's not forget the part about being regulated by the FCC.
Meaning quarterly reports, filings, hearings, negotiations with LEC's, etc.

I'm happy in WISP land. :)
