Re: Alvarion (was Re: [WISPA] RF propagation map: WiFi vs WiMax?)

On the Cisco note Matt, Cisco is making ASN gateways for WiMAX and so
far the only ones they have slide into our WiMAX macro base stations, so
we have and are doing considerable work with them to integrate some of
their pieces into ours.

Can you expand on that? The Cisco platforms we are running for our
network support the ASN gateway. I'd like to understand what advantages
this setup has as opposed to just using Ethernet to connect a base
station to my Cisco.

But along with that point, the only way operators will be able to
participate in that part is if they go with an 802.16e version of 3.65
GHz product. The first WiMAX products to hit the band will be based on
the old 802.16d standard. While that will provide some of the service
benefits of WiMAX, it will not have all the goodies 802.16e will have
nor should it be able to achieve the same link budgets that can be
achieved with 802.16e.

What goodies are you referring to with e? Based on the results of our
testing with 3.65 we don't think mobility is going to make much sense in
the band. Further, it doesn't appear indoor (self-install) SMs are going
to do well beyond 1 mile from the base station. All of which is fine
with us. We just want the spectral efficiency and the additional
spectrum. 802.16d gets us that I believe.

On the regulatory side, vendors also have to solve the unrestricted
contention requirement or else your gear will be relegated only to the
lower 25 MHz. I suspect some will try to come out with proprietary means
of dealing with this, but with that goes some of the standardization.
That's what 802.16h set out to fix when the task group was formed 2.5
years ago and it is what we support.

That would be an interesting development. I suspect we will see
802.11n-based gear available for the band soon as it should be able to
operate in the entire 50Mhz.

Kelly,

MTI makes a 11 dBi Horizontal Omni . I'm sure the price is a little bit
higher though

Re: [WISPA] Horizontally Polarized 900 MHz Antenna

2007-10-11 Thread Tom DeReggi
First of all If you are using in the US, remember that most most 900Mhz
radios support up to 26db and 10dbi is FCC max antenna gain allowed.
Secondly, if we compare Horizontal to Verticaly pol designs 11dbi V
antennas are about 11feet tall apposed to 9dbi antennas about 5ft tall. H
antenna are very wide usually a foot or so, compared to a vertical of about
2. So a higher gain Omni, may likely be a monster to deal with.

MTI also makes a 900Mhz H POl antenna.
Someone else also had released one for about $650 but can't remember who, so
I'm not much help :-(

We were happen with the PacWireless horizontal, except for the price. The
PacWireless comes will a tower leg mount included, However, we learned that
being that close to the tower did cause inconsistent performance in all
directions. Plan on being 24 from tower leg, to no compromise coverage.

The other thing we found is that the best thing we could do to gain coverage
is to raide antenna to get over the tree line, (Provided farther out hils
blocked interference) and the higher we got, the more important wider
verticle beamwidth was. We do not recommend 11dbi or higher Omnis UNLESS
they also include electronic downtilt and/or NullFill to compensate for the
theoretical reduced verticle beamwidth of a typical 11dbi antenna.

So my point being... The deployment technique of the anntenna installation
has such a much larger effect on performance, than the 1 db difference, of
the Pacwireless being spec'ed under 10db max allowed.

[WISPA] Shirt Orders

2007-10-11 Thread Rick Harnish
I received numerous orders for WISPA shirts that requested shipments. I
will need shipping information from anyone who asked that I ship the shirts
to their business or home. Email HYPERLINK
mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED][EMAIL PROTECTED] with this info
or you may be waiting a long time for your shirt! ;) If you are attending
ISPCON, I will bring your shirts there. I may have a few shirts left over
after ISPCON. If we do, I will make an announcement for any late orders.

Thanks,

Rick Harnish

They work OK for us in the East San Francisco Bay area.
They have the ability to move to a different channel if the noise gets
