[WISPA] ConnectOhio/ CN Comments Dave Hannum

2009-12-17 Thread bcochran
I will have to agree with David Hannum at New Era. about CO?CN operation
people. Chip and Layne
Although our dealing with ConnectOhio, have not been a delight, and we find
them going from one whim to another robbing the State of Ohio.
There new project RFP by State for broadband expansion seems to be a great
idea.
Although they have split the wireless venders with Congressman Zach Space
medical project, that would be just what they set out to do.
ConnectOhio, is vendor savvy, but doesn't push any Wild Blue in our Counties
nor anyone except Horizon Telephone Company. Which is going with Fed monies
lay fiber to almost everyone in South Eastern Ohio. Putting Wireless
operators out of business.
So draw your own conclusions about CN

Has anyone installed wireless in rental complex?

Problem is the owner has bulk cable coming into the complex, and wonders if
cable company would cut his service if we connect to his router and
distribute internet service to his renters. He is having problems with cable
company and wants to purchase our CPE for tenants and charge them for
internet service, thus going around cable service, and providing internet to
his customers

Re: [WISPA] Wireless Digest, Vol 12, Issue 17

2008-12-08 Thread bcochran
I'm just sales and Business development person in fairly large WISP.

We junked Motorola radio couple years because of customer demands and
Motorola could not produce bandwidth needed for demand.
We currently are using Tranzeo for backhaul and for some CPE installations.
We have started using PePWave for some consumer installations and have had
no problems with them.
If our service is going to compete with Comcast version, and Time Warner we
need to figure how to produce large amounts of bandwidth to customers and
the smaller WISP's that we provide service to in very rural locations, in WV
Ohio and Kentucky.
Retiring from another service organization has taught me that there are
benefits in trade organizations.
It would seem to me that we should have and use trade organizations, and to
link our service up so we could service customers all over trade areas that
are even out of our service areas.
We all could bands together and purchase bandwidth as a group rather than
each of us purchase bandwidth individually. Yes a national bandwidth
contract.
We currently are supplying bandwidth to four WISPS, from 1.50Mg to 15Mg much
cheaper that what they can purchase from Cable or telco's. This has reduce
our per Meg cost and there's.
Let's get together and as a group do something rather than just talk and
pass on things that benefit all of WISP.

Anyone can make a surveymonkey survey for free. Just go to the site and
create one. I have participated in several before but this is the first one

I made. I would have done it a little different if I knew how to use the
options better. Go give it a try. Data gathering is interesting and I
think it is good for all of us.

Wireless broadband
coming to Reedy
Community center
getting free access

Roger Mullins (right) looks over aerial photographs with the help of George
Dizelos of the Louis Berger Group of consulting engineers from Washington,
D.C., at a meeting in Spencer last week.

By JIM COOPER
Editor - A chance connection is expected to bring wireless broadband service
to Reedy by the end of this year.

WV WISP LLC, a private company based in Jackson County, has received a
$628,200 USDA Rural Development grant that will also make computers
available for public use in the Reedy Community Center.

"We've got some pretty high expectations," Frank Waybright, a Ripley
resident who co-owns the start-up company with local developer Rod Parsons,
said. "We'd like to have it up and running within 90 to 120 days. It's
definitely going to make an impact."

Waybright said the project involves installing four towers to bring existing
service from the Ripley area. The towers will be built in Ripley, on Aplin
Ridge, Colt Ridge and in Reedy. He said the towers, which can usually be
erected in less than four weeks, could reach residents from 10 to 20 miles
away.

Twenty-five communities in 16 states received $15.6 million from the USDA
through its Community Connect Grant program. Reedy was the only community in
West Virginia to be selected. Nationwide, 103 applications were made.

Richard Jenkins, the USDA's general field representative for West Virginia
and Virginia, said Reedy, a community with an estimated population of nearly
200, was a good fit for the grant's qualifications.

"It's based on (rural nature) and household income," Jenkins explained.
"Reedy scored high on the subjective part of the grant. West Virginia's a
poor state and the funds are designed to go to areas that need help."

Reedy Mayor Sam Salvucci said he first learned of the proposal after being
contacted by Waybright.

"This guy just came up out of nowhere," he said. "He called me up one day
and told me what his plans were. We're awfully lucky we were the ones
selected."

The grant is for a two-year period. It requires WV WISP to install 10
computers in the community building and provide free access to the Internet.
A full-time job will also be created for a tech support person that will
assist the public in making use of the service. Jenkins said the computers
would be available a minimum of 48 hours each week.

The Reedy Volunteer Fire Dept. and Reedy Elementary School will also receive
free wireless service. At present, only dial-up Internet service is
available in Reedy.

Jenkins said he anticipates that the program would have a similar effect as
it did when it brought broadband to another part of the Appalachian region
in which he works.

"It's changed the outlook of so many people in the southwestern Virginia
coalfields and I hope it will do the same here," he said.

Waybright, who has several years of experience as a network engineer, said
he had recently operated a wireless service in Jackson County until selling
the business. WV WISP expects to turn a profit from the customers it gains,
he said, and, according to Jenkins, from leasing space on its towers. The
service could eventually expand into Wirt County from Reedy, Waybright said.

Salvucci said he was optimistic that Reedy
