Re: [WISPA] Best cat5 for a monopole

2017-01-21 Thread Mike Hammett
I am considering an S16 for MDU applications. A couple strands of SFP+ going
back to central switching\routing and some 12 gauge copper for power.

So far so good! The 16 port is just a switch, smaller ones are routers. The 16
is what we are using. powers 4 48vdc and 12-16 24vdc. Spring storm season will
tell. Considering the number of fried Netonics and Digital Loggers over the
years, with not just surge damage, but issues in software... this caused the
switch back about 6 months ago. Using Traco power supply systems with battery
backups and 110AC and DC surging, plus UPS 110.

I was kind of thinking along those lines but with cable. Rope would
probably be cheaper, but make sure to get something that won't rot.

We have 12 monopoles from 150' to 195'. We are using this:

http://www.primuscable.com/store/p/9117-CAT-6-Ethernet-Cable-Shielded-Aerial-w/-Messenger-Wire-Solid-23-AWG.aspx

We've also learned that stringing the cables to a rope, and strapping them
every 20' or so and then hanging the rope at the top to relieve strain
increase the life expectancy. The 90' you are talking about might not be
too bad for dangling, but at 195' we've learned that over time, it causes
problems. Also, the messenger wire used as a ground on this cable is great
for BH's. Especially the Mimosa B5's which really like a ground run to the
bottom. If you need extra cables, you just hang a new rope. We've also
contrived a pulley system for taking the rig to the top. While we've not
deployed it yet, we are planning to this coming spring once tower weather
returns.

In all seriousness though, use BBDGE or something similar. Biggest issue I

So far so good! The 16 port is just a switch, smaller ones are routers. The
16 is what we are using. powers 4 48vdc and 12-16 24vdc. Spring storm
season will tell. Considering the number of fried Netonics and Digital
Loggers over the years, with not just surge damage, but issues in
software... this caused the switch back about 6 months ago. Using Traco
power supply systems with battery backups and 110AC and DC surging, plus
UPS 110.

We now do not use cat5 on commercial towers, and have opted to a power

 does the job, with ESD?

Re: [WISPA] Best cat5 for a monopole

2017-01-18 Thread Faisal Imtiaz
Most of the good quality outdoor Ethernet cables have a 'strength tape' in the
middle...
UBNT Carrier has a nice piece of plastic in the middle...
Shireen cable has a nice fiber tape ..
etc etc.

If you can tie these cables at the top securely, then there should be no issue
is letting it dangle in the center of the monopole.

Has the edgepoint been rock solid for you? Thats my main concern with that
approach. This tower is a difficult climb (its actually a light pole) so
avoiding trips up top is ideal.

You cut off the outer most plastic. Then it's "normal size" cat5. I
believe I used regular rj45 from a local supply back then.
